1 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the entrance of the house. 2 And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favor in his sight; and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre. 3 Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be given thee even to the half of the kingdom. 4 And Esther said, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him.

5 Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, that it may be done as Esther hath said. So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared. 6 And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed. 7 Then answered Esther, and said, My petition and my request is: 8 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to-morrow as the king hath said.

9 Then went Haman forth that day joyful and glad of heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he stood not up nor moved for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai. 10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself, and went home; and he sent and fetched his friends and Zeresh his wife. 11 And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. 12 Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to-morrow also am I invited by her together with the king. 13 Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate. 14 Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made fifty cubits high, and in the morning speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.

Împăratul ședea pe scaunul lui împărătesc, în casa împărătească, în fața ușii casei. 2 Când a văzut împăratul pe împărăteasa Estera în picioare în curte, ea a căpătat trecere*Prov. 21:1. înaintea lui. Și împăratul*Cap. 4:11;8:4. a întins Esterei toiagul împărătesc pe care-l ținea în mână. Estera s-a apropiat și a atins vârful toiagului. 3 Împăratul i-a zis: „Ce ai tu, împărăteasă Estero, și ce ceri? Chiar dacă ai cere jumătate*Marcu 6:23. din împărăție, îți voi da." 4 Estera a răspuns: „Dacă împăratul găsește cu cale, să vină împăratul astăzi cu Haman la ospățul pe care i l-am pregătit." 5 Și împăratul a zis: „Duceți-vă îndată și aduceți pe Haman, cum dorește Estera." Împăratul s-a dus cu Haman la ospățul pe care-l pregătise Estera. 6 Și, pe când beau*Cap. 7:2. vin, împăratul a zis Esterei: „Care*Cap. 9:12. este cererea ta? Ea îți va fi împlinită. Ce dorești? Chiar dacă ai cere jumătate din împărăție, o vei căpăta." 7 Estera a răspuns: „Iată ce cer și ce doresc. 8 Dacă am căpătat trecere înaintea împăratului și dacă găsește cu cale împăratul, să-mi împlinească cererea și să-mi facă dorința să mai vină împăratul cu Haman și la ospățul pe care li-l voi pregăti, și mâine voi da răspuns împăratului după porunca lui."

9 Haman a ieșit în ziua aceea vesel și cu inima mulțumită. Dar, când a văzut la poarta împăratului pe Mardoheu, care nu se scula*Cap. 3:5., nici nu se mișca înaintea lui, s-a umplut de mânie împotriva lui Mardoheu. 10 A știut totuși să se stăpânească*2 Sam. 13:22. și s-a dus acasă. Apoi a trimis să aducă pe prietenii săi și pe nevastă-sa Zereș. 11 Haman le-a vorbit despre strălucirea bogățiilor lui, despre numărul fiilor*Cap. 9:7. săi, despre tot ce făcuse împăratul ca să-l ridice în vrednicie și despre locul pe care i-l dăduse mai presus*Cap. 3:1. de căpeteniile și slujitorii împăratului. 12 Și a adăugat: „Eu sunt chiar singurul pe care împărăteasa Estera l-a primit împreună cu împăratul la ospățul pe care l-a făcut și sunt poftit și mâine la ea cu împăratul. 13 Dar toate acestea n-au niciun preț pentru mine câtă vreme voi vedea pe Mardoheu, iudeul acela, șezând la poarta împăratului." 14 Nevastă-sa Zereș și toți prietenii lui i-au zis: „Să se pregătească o spânzurătoare*Cap. 7:9. înaltă de cincizeci de coți și mâine dimineață cere*Cap. 6:4. împăratului ca Mardoheu să fie spânzurat. Apoi vei merge vesel la ospăț cu împăratul." Părerea aceasta a plăcut lui Haman și a pus să pregătească*Cap. 7:10. spânzurătoarea.
