1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

2 O Jehovah, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save. 3 Why dost thou show me iniquity, and look upon perverseness? for destruction and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention riseth up. 4 Therefore the law is slacked, and justice doth never go forth; for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore justice goeth forth perverted.

5 Behold ye among the nations, and look, and wonder marvellously; for I am working a work in your days, which ye will not believe though it be told you. 6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, that march through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling-places that are not theirs. 7 They are terrible and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves. 8 Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen press proudly on: yea, their horsemen come from far; they fly as an eagle that hasteth to devour. 9 They come all of them for violence; the set of their faces is forwards; and they gather captives as the sand. 10 Yea, he scoffeth at kings, and princes are a derision unto him; he derideth every stronghold; for he heapeth up dust, and taketh it. 11 Then shall he sweep by as a wind, and shall pass over, and be guilty, even he whose might is his god.

12 Art not thou from everlasting, O Jehovah my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O Jehovah, thou hast ordained him for judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast established him for correction. 13 Thou that art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and that canst not look on perverseness, wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy peace when the wicked swalloweth up the man that is more righteous than he; 14 and makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? 15 He taketh up all of them with the angle, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad. 16 Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous. 17 Shall he therefore empty his net, and spare not to slay the nations continually?

Asuprirea și silnicia se fac sub ochii mei, se nasc certuri și se stârnește gâlceavă. 4 De aceea legea este fără putere și dreptatea nu se vede, căci cel rău*Iov 21:7.Ps. 94:3.Ier. 12:1. biruiește pe cel neprihănit, de aceea se fac judecăți nedrepte. 5 „Aruncați-vă ochii*Is. 29:14.Fapte 13:41. printre neamuri și priviți, uimiți-vă și îngroziți-vă! Căci în zilele voastre voi face o lucrare pe care n-ați crede-o, dacă v-ar povesti-o cineva! 6 Iată, voi ridica pe haldeeni*Deut. 28:49,50.Ier. 5:16. – popor turbat și iute, care străbate întinderi mari de țări, ca să pună mâna pe locuințe care nu sunt ale lui. 7 El este grozav și înfricoșat; numai din el însuși îi ies dreptul și mărirea lui. 8 Caii lui sunt mai iuți decât leoparzii, mai sprinteni decât lupii de seară*Ier. 5:6.Ţef. 3:3., și călăreții lui înaintează în galop de departe, zboară*Ier. 4:13. ca vulturul care se repede asupra prăzii. 9 Tot poporul acesta vine numai ca să jefuiască; privirile lui lacome caută înainte și strânge prinși de război ca nisipul. 10 Își bate joc de împărați, și voievozii sunt o nimica pentru el, râde de toate întăriturile, căci îngrămădește pământ și le ia. 11 Apoi aprinderea i se îndoiește, întrece măsura și se face vinovat, căci puterea*Dan. 5:4. lui o ia ca dumnezeu al lui!" 12 Doamne, nu ești Tu*Ps. 90:2;93:2.Plâng. 5:19. din veșnicie, Dumnezeul meu, Sfântul meu? Nu vom muri! Doamne, Tu ai ridicat pe poporul acesta ca să-Ți împlinești judecățile Tale*2 Împ. 19:25.Ps. 17:13.Is. 10:5-7.Ezec. 30:25.; Tu, Stânca mea, l-ai ridicat ca să dai prin el pedepsele Tale! 13 Ochii Tăi sunt așa de curați*Ps. 5:5. că nu pot să vadă răul și nu poți să privești nelegiuirea! Cum*Ier. 12:1. ai putea privi Tu pe cei mișei și să taci când cel rău mănâncă pe cel mai neprihănit decât el? 14 Vei face Tu omului ca peștilor mării, ca târâtoarei, care n-are stăpân? 15 El îi scoate*Ier. 16:16.Amos 4:2. pe toți cu undița, îi trage în mreaja sa, îi strânge în năvodul său. De aceea se bucură și se veselește. 16 De aceea aduce jertfe*Deut. 8:17.Is. 10:13;37:24,25. mrejei sale, aduce tămâie năvodului său, căci lor le datorează partea lui cea grasă și bucatele lui gustoase! 17 Pentru aceasta își va goli el întruna mreaja și va înjunghia fără milă pe neamuri?
