1 And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead. 2 And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, saying, Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand. 8 And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go. 9 And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

12 And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor. 13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, unto the river Kishon. 14 And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which Jehovah hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Jehovah gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. 15 And Jehovah discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet. 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him. 20 And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No. 21 Then Jael Heber’s wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died. 22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. 24 And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

Căpetenia oștirii lui era Sisera*1 Sam. 12:9.Ps. 83:9. și locuia la Haroșet-Goim*Vers. 13,16.. 3 Copiii lui Israel au strigat către Domnul, căci Iabin avea nouă sute de care de fier*Cap. 1:19. și de douăzeci de ani apăsa*Cap. 5:8.Ps. 106:42. cu putere pe copiii lui Israel. 4 Pe vremea aceea, judecător în Israel era Debora, prorocița, nevasta lui Lapidot. 5 Ea ședea*Gen. 35:8. sub finicul Deborei, între Rama și Betel, în muntele lui Efraim, și copiii lui Israel se suiau la ea ca să fie judecați. 6 Ea a trimis să cheme pe Barac*Evr. 11:32., fiul lui Abinoam, din Chedeș-Neftali*Ios. 19:37., și i-a zis: „Iată porunca pe care a dat-o Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Du-te, îndreaptă-te spre muntele Taborului și ia cu tine zece mii de oameni din copiii lui Neftali și din copiii lui Zabulon; 7 voi trage*Exod 14:4. spre tine, la pârâul Chison*Cap. 5:21.1 Împ. 18:40.Ps. 83:9,10., pe Sisera, căpetenia oștirii lui Iabin, împreună cu carele și oștile lui, și-l voi da în mâinile tale.’" 8 Barac i-a zis: „Dacă vii tu cu mine, mă voi duce; dar dacă nu vii cu mine, nu mă voi duce." 9 Ea a răspuns: „Voi merge cu tine, dar nu vei avea slavă în calea pe care mergi, căci Domnul va da*Cap. 2:14. pe Sisera în mâinile unei femei." Și Debora s-a sculat și s-a dus cu Barac la Chedeș. 10 Barac a chemat pe Zabulon*Cap. 5:18. și Neftali la Chedeș; zece mii de oameni mergeau în*Exod 11:8.1 Împ. 20:10. urma lui și Debora a plecat cu el. 11 Heber, Chenitul*Cap. 1:16., se despărțise de cheniți, fiii lui Hobab*Num. 10:29., socrul lui Moise, și își întinsese cortul până la stejarul Țaanaim, lângă*Vers. 6. Chedeș. 12 Au dat de știre lui Sisera că Barac, fiul lui Abinoam, s-a îndreptat spre muntele Taborului. 13 Și, de la Haroșet-Goim, Sisera și-a strâns spre pârâul Chisonului toate carele, nouă sute de care de fier, și tot poporul care era cu el. 14 Atunci, Debora a zis lui Barac: „Scoală-te, căci iată ziua când dă Domnul pe Sisera în mâinile tale. Într-adevăr, Domnul*Deut. 9:3.2 Sam. 5:24.Ps. 68:7.Is. 52:12. merge înaintea ta." Și Barac s-a repezit de pe muntele Taborului cu zece mii de oameni după el. 15 Domnul*Ps. 83:9,10.Ios. 10:10. a pus pe fugă dinaintea lui Barac, prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe Sisera, toate carele lui și toată tabăra. Sisera s-a dat jos din carul lui și a fugit pe jos. 16 Barac a urmărit carele și oștirea până la Haroșet-Goim, și toată oștirea lui Sisera a căzut sub ascuțișul sabiei, fără să fi rămas un singur om.

17 Sisera a fugit pe jos în cortul Iaelei, nevasta lui Heber, Chenitul, căci între Iabin, împăratul Hațorului, și casa lui Heber, Chenitul, era pace. 18 Iael a ieșit înaintea lui Sisera și i-a zis: „Intră, domnul meu, intră la mine și nu te teme." El a intrat la ea în cort și ea l-a ascuns sub o învelitoare. 19 El i-a zis: „Dă-mi, te rog, puțină apă să beau, căci mi-e sete." Ea a deschis burduful*Cap. 5:25. cu lapte, i-a dat să bea și l-a acoperit. 20 El i-a mai zis: „Stai la ușa cortului și, dacă vine cineva și te întreabă: ‘Este cineva aici?’, să răspunzi: ‘Nu.’" 21 Iael*Cap. 5:26., nevasta lui Heber, a luat un țăruș de-al cortului, a pus mâna pe ciocan, s-a apropiat încet de el și i-a bătut țărușul în tâmplă, așa că a răspuns adânc în pământ. El adormise adânc și era rupt de oboseală și a murit. 22 Pe când Barac urmărea pe Sisera, Iael i-a ieșit înainte și i-a zis: „Vino, și-ți voi arăta pe omul pe care-l cauți." El a intrat la ea și iată că Sisera stătea întins, mort, cu țărușul bătut în tâmplă. 23 În ziua aceea, Dumnezeu a smerit*Ps. 18:47. pe Iabin, împăratul Canaanului, înaintea copiilor lui Israel. 24 Și mâna copiilor lui Israel a apăsat greu asupra lui Iabin, împăratul Canaanului, până ce au nimicit pe Iabin, împăratul Canaanului.
