1 Is there not a warfare to man upon earth?

And are not his days like the days of a hireling?

2 As a servant that earnestly desireth the shadow,

And as a hireling that looketh for his wages:

3 So am I made to possess months of misery,

And wearisome nights are appointed to me.

4 When I lie down, I say,

When shall I arise, and the night be gone?

And I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.

5 My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust;

My skin closeth up, and breaketh out afresh.

6 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,

And are spent without hope.

7 Oh remember that my life is a breath:

Mine eye shall no more see good.

8 The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more;

Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be.

9 As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away,

So he that goeth down to Sheol shall come up no more.

10 He shall return no more to his house,

Neither shall his place know him any more.

11 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth;

I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;

I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

12 Am I a sea, or a sea-monster,

That thou settest a watch over me?

13 When I say, My bed shall comfort me,

My couch shall ease my complaint;

14 Then thou scarest me with dreams,

And terrifiest me through visions:

15 So that my soul chooseth strangling,

And death rather than these my bones.

16 I loathe my life; I would not live alway:

Let me alone; for my days are vanity.

17 What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him,

And that thou shouldest set thy mind upon him,

18 And that thou shouldest visit him every morning,

And try him every moment?

19 How long wilt thou not look away from me,

Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?

20 If I have sinned, what do I unto thee, O thou watcher of men?

Why hast thou set me as a mark for thee,

So that I am a burden to myself?

21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity?

For now shall I lie down in the dust;

And thou wilt seek me diligently, but I shall not be.

2 Cum suspină robul după umbră,

cum își așteaptă muncitorul plata,

3 așa am eu parte de luni de durere*Cap. 29:2.,

și partea mea sunt nopți de suferință.

4 Mă culc și zic:

‘Când mă voi scula*Deut. 28:67. Cap. 17:12.?

Când se va sfârși noaptea?’

Și mă satur de frământări până în revărsatul zorilor.

5 Trupul mi se acoperă*Is. 14:11. cu viermi și cu o coajă pământoasă,

pielea-mi crapă și se desface.

6 Zilele mele*Cap. 9:25;16:22;17:11.Ps. 90:6;102:11;103:15;144:4.Is. 38:12;40:6.Iac. 4:14. zboară mai iuți decât suveica țesătorului,

se duc și nu mai am nicio nădejde!

7 Adu-Ți aminte, Dumnezeule, că viața mea*Ps. 78:39;89:47. este doar o suflare!

Ochii mei nu vor mai vedea fericirea.

8 Ochiul*Cap. 20:9. care mă privește nu mă va mai privi;

ochiul Tău mă va căuta și nu voi mai fi.

9 Cum se risipește norul și trece,

așa nu se va mai ridica cel ce se*2 Sam. 12:23. coboară în Locuința morților!

10 Nu se va mai întoarce în casa lui

și nu-și va mai cunoaște locul*Cap. 8:18;20:9.Ps. 103:16. în care locuia.

11 De aceea nu-mi*Ps. 39:1,9;40:9. voi ține gura,

ci voi vorbi în neliniștea inimii mele,

mă voi tângui*1 Sam. 1:10. Cap. 10:1. în amărăciunea sufletului meu.

12 Oare o mare sunt eu sau un balaur de mare,

de-ai pus strajă în jurul meu?

13 Când*Cap. 9:27. zic: ‘Patul mă va ușura,

culcușul îmi va alina durerile’,

14 atunci mă înspăimânți prin vise,

mă îngrozești prin vedenii.

15 Ah, aș vrea mai bine gâtuirea,

mai bine moartea decât aceste oase!

16 Le disprețuiesc*Cap. 10:1.!… Nu voi trăi în veci…

Lasă-mă*Cap. 10:20;14:6.Ps. 39:13., căci doar o suflare mi-i viața*Ps. 62:9.!

17 Ce este*Ps. 8:4;144:3.Evr. 2:6. omul ca să-Ți pese atât de mult de el,

ca să iei seama la el,

18 să-l cercetezi în toate diminețile

și să-l încerci în toate clipele?

19 Când vei înceta odată să mă privești?

Când îmi vei da răgaz să-mi înghit scuipatul?

20 Dacă am păcătuit, ce pot să-Ți fac, Păzitorul*Ps. 36:6. oamenilor?

Pentru ce m-ai pus*Cap. 16:12.Ps. 21:12.Plâng. 3:12. țintă săgeților Tale,

de am ajuns o povară chiar pentru mine însumi?

21 Pentru ce nu-mi ierți păcatul

și pentru ce nu-mi uiți fărădelegea?

Căci voi adormi în țărână

și, când mă vei căuta, nu voi mai fi!"
