1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them. 3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Jehovah: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4 And these were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country: 18 and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; 20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. 22 And they went up by the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a staff between two; they brought also of the pomegranates, and of the figs. 24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us; and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. 28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 29 Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.

30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Lui Hosea, fiul lui Nun, Moise i-a pus numele Iosua. 17 Moise i-a trimis să iscodească țara Canaanului. El le-a zis: „Mergeți de aici spre miazăzi*Vers. 21. și apoi să vă suiți*Gen. 14:10.Jud. 1:9,19. pe munte. 18 Vedeți țara, vedeți cum este ea, cum este poporul care o locuiește: dacă este tare sau slab, dacă este mic sau mare la număr; 19 vedeți cum este țara în care locuiește: dacă este bună sau rea; cum sunt cetățile în care locuiește: dacă sunt deschise sau întărite; 20 cum este pământul: dacă este gras*Neem. 9:25,35.Ezec. 34:14. sau sterp, dacă sunt sau nu copaci pe el. Fiți*Deut. 31:6,7,23. cu inimă și luați cu voi roade din țară." Era pe vremea când încep să se coacă strugurii. 21 Ei s-au suit și au iscodit țara, de la pustia*Cap. 34:3.Ios. 15:1. Țin până la Rehob*Ios. 19:28., pe drumul care duce la Hamat. 22 S-au suit pe la miazăzi și au mers până la Hebron, unde se aflau Ahiman*Ios. 11:21,22;15:13,14.Jud. 1:10., Șeșai și Talmai, copiii lui Anac*Vers. 33.. Hebronul*Ios. 21:11. fusese zidit cu șapte ani înainte de cetatea Țoan*Ps. 78:12.Is. 19:11;30:4. din Egipt. 23 Au ajuns*Deut. 1:24,25. până la valea Eșcol. Acolo au tăiat o ramură de viță cu un strugure și l-au dus câte doi cu ajutorul unei prăjini. Au luat și rodii și smochine. 24 Locul acela l-au numit valea Eșcol (Strugure) din pricina strugurelui pe care l-au tăiat de acolo copiii lui Israel. 25 S-au întors de la iscodirea țării după patruzeci de zile împlinite. 26 Au plecat și au ajuns la Moise și la Aaron și la toată adunarea copiilor lui Israel, la Cades*Vers. 3., în pustia*Cap. 20:1,16;32:8;33:36.Deut. 1:19.Ios. 14:6. Paran. Le-au adus știri, lor și întregii adunări, și le-au arătat roadele țării. 27 Iată ce au istorisit lui Moise: „Ne-am dus în țara în care ne-ai trimis. Cu adevărat, este o țară în care curge lapte*Exod 3:8;33:3. și miere și iată-i*Deut. 1:25. roadele. 28 Dar poporul*Deut. 1:28;9:1,2. care locuiește în țara aceasta este puternic, cetățile sunt întărite și foarte mari. Ba încă am văzut acolo și pe fiii*Vers. 33. lui Anac. 29 Amaleciții*Exod 17:8. Cap. 14:43.Jud. 6:3.1 Sam. 14:48;15:3. locuiesc ținutul de la miazăzi; iebusiții și amoriții locuiesc muntele și canaaniții și hetiții locuiesc lângă mare și de-a lungul Iordanului." 30 Caleb*Cap. 14:6,24.Ios. 14:7. a potolit poporul care cârtea împotriva lui Moise. El a zis: „Haidem să ne suim și să punem mâna pe țară, căci vom fi biruitori!" 31 Dar*Cap. 32:9.Deut. 1:28.Ios. 14:8. bărbații care fuseseră împreună cu el au zis: „Nu putem să ne suim împotriva poporului acestuia, căci este mai tare decât noi." 32 Și au înnegrit*Cap. 14:36,37. înaintea copiilor lui Israel țara pe care o iscodiseră. Ei au zis: „Țara pe care am străbătut-o, ca s-o iscodim, este o țară care mănâncă pe locuitorii ei; toți aceia*Amos 2:9. pe care i-am văzut acolo sunt oameni de statură înaltă. 33 Apoi, am mai văzut în ea pe uriași, pe copiii lui Anac*Deut. 1:28;2:10;9:2., care se trag din neamul uriașilor: înaintea noastră și față*Is. 40:22. de ei parcă eram niște lăcuste*1 Sam. 17:42.."
