1 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people strove with Moses, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah! 4 And why have ye brought the assembly of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our beasts? 5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink. 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto them. 7 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 8 Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink. 9 And Moses took the rod from before Jehovah, as he commanded him.

10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock? 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle. 12 And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed not in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them. 13 These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Jehovah, and he was sanctified in them.

14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us: 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers: 16 and when we cried unto Jehovah, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border. 17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king’s highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border. 18 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee. 19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof: let me only, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet. 20 And he said, Thou shalt not pass through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

22 And they journeyed from Kadesh: and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor. 23 And Jehovah spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying, 24 Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor; 26 and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there. 27 And Moses did as Jehovah commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there on the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount. 29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.

Cap. 14:2. ceartă cu Moise. Ei au zis: „Ce bine ar fi fost să fi murit noi când*Cap. 11:1,33;14:37;16:32,35,49. au murit frații noștri înaintea Domnului! 4 Pentru ce*Exod 17:3. ați adus adunarea Domnului în pustia aceasta, ca să murim în ea, noi și vitele noastre? 5 Pentru ce ne-ați scos din Egipt și ne-ați adus în acest loc rău, unde nu este nici loc de semănat, nici smochin, nici viță, nici rodiu, nici apă de băut?" 6 Moise și Aaron au plecat de la adunare și s-au dus la ușa cortului întâlnirii. Au căzut*Cap. 14:5;16:4,22,45. cu fața la pământ și li s-a arătat slava*Cap. 14:10. Domnului. 7 Domnul a vorbit lui Moise și a zis: 8 „Ia*Exod 17:5. toiagul și cheamă adunarea, tu și fratele tău Aaron. Să vorbiți stâncii acesteia în fața lor, și ea va da apă. Să le scoți*Neem. 9:15.Ps. 78:15,16;105:41;114:8.Is. 43:20;48:21. astfel apă din stâncă și să adăpi adunarea și vitele lor." 9 Moise a luat toiagul dinaintea*Cap. 17:10. Domnului, cum îi poruncise Domnul. 10 Moise și Aaron au chemat adunarea înaintea stâncii. Și Moise le-a zis: „Ascultați*Ps. 106:33., răzvrătiților! Vom putea noi oare să vă scoatem apă din stânca aceasta?" 11 Apoi Moise a ridicat mâna și a lovit stânca de două ori cu toiagul. Și a ieșit apă*Exod 17:6.Deut. 8:15.1 Cor. 10:4. din belșug, așa încât a băut și adunarea și au băut și vitele. 12 Atunci, Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Pentru că n-ați*Cap. 27:14.Deut. 1:37;3:26;32:51. crezut în Mine ca să Mă sfințiți*Lev. 10:3.Ezec. 20:41;36:23;38:16.1 Pet. 3:15. înaintea copiilor lui Israel, nu voi veți duce adunarea aceasta în țara pe care i-o dau." 13 Acestea sunt*Deut. 33:8.Ps. 95:8;106:32. apele Meriba (Ceartă), unde s-au certat copiii lui Israel cu Domnul, care a fost sfințit între ei.

14 De la Cades, Moise*Jud. 11:16,17. a trimis niște soli la împăratul Edomului ca să-i spună: „Așa*Deut. 2:4;23:7.Obad. 10,12. vorbește fratele tău Israel: ‘Tu știi toate suferințele prin care am trecut. 15 Părinții*Gen. 46:6.Fapte 7:15. noștri s-au coborât în Egipt și am*Exod 12:40;1:11.Deut. 26:6.Fapte 7:19. locuit acolo multă vreme. Dar egiptenii ne-au chinuit, pe noi și pe părinții noștri. 16 Am*Exod 2:23;3:7. strigat către Domnul, și El ne-a auzit glasul. A trimis*Exod 3:2;14:19;23:20;33:2. un Înger și ne-a scos din Egipt. Și iată că suntem la Cades, cetate care se află la marginea ținutului tău. 17 Lasă-ne*Cap. 21:22.Deut. 2:27. să trecem prin țara ta; nu vom trece nici prin ogoare, nici prin vii și nici nu vom bea apă din fântâni; vom merge pe drumul împărătesc, fără să ne abatem la dreapta sau la stânga, până vom trece de ținutul tău.’" 18 Edom i-a răspuns: „Să nu cumva să treci pe la mine, căci altfel îți voi ieși înainte cu sabia." 19 Copiii lui Israel i-au zis: „Vom merge pe drumul cel mare și, dacă vom bea din apa ta eu și turmele mele, îți voi*Deut. 2:6,28. plăti prețul; nu-ți cer altceva decât să trec cu picioarele!" 20 El a răspuns: „Să nu cumva*Jud. 11:17. să treci!" Și Edom i-a ieșit înainte cu multă gloată și cu mână tare. 21 Astfel*Deut. 2:27,29., Edom n-a vrut să lase pe Israel să treacă prin ținutul lui. Și Israel s-a abătut*Deut. 2:4,5,8.Jud. 11:18. de la el.

22 Toată adunarea copiilor lui Israel a plecat de la Cades*Cap. 33:37. și a ajuns*Cap. 21:4. la muntele Hor. 23 Domnul a zis lui Moise și lui Aaron lângă muntele Hor, la hotarele țării lui Edom: 24 „Aaron are să fie adăugat*Gen. 25:8. Cap. 27:13;31:2.Deut. 32:50. la poporul lui, căci nu va intra în țara pe care o dau copiilor lui Israel, pentru că v-ați*Vers. 12. împotrivit poruncii Mele, la apele Meriba. 25 Ia pe Aaron*Cap. 33:38.Deut. 32:50. și pe fiul său Eleazar și suie-i pe muntele Hor. 26 Dezbracă pe Aaron de veșmintele lui și îmbracă pe fiul său Eleazar cu ele. Acolo va fi adăugat Aaron la poporul lui și va muri." 27 Moise a făcut ce-i poruncise Domnul. S-au suit pe muntele Hor, în fața întregii adunări. 28 Moise*Exod 29:29,30. a dezbrăcat pe Aaron de veșmintele lui și a îmbrăcat cu ele pe fiul său Eleazar. Aaron*Cap. 33:38.Deut. 10:6;32:50. a murit acolo, pe vârful muntelui. Moise și Eleazar s-au coborât de pe munte. 29 Toată adunarea a văzut că Aaron murise și toată casa lui Israel a plâns pe Aaron treizeci*Deut. 34:8. de zile.
