1 And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab: 2 for they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel. 4 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel. 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto Baal-peor.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting. 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand; 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9 And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. 12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: 13 and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

14 Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

16 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them; 18 for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

„Fiecare*Exod 32:27.Deut. 13:6,9,13,15. din voi să ucidă pe aceia dintre ai lui care s-au lipit de Baal-Peor." 6 Și iată că un bărbat dintre copiii lui Israel a venit și a adus la frații lui pe o madianită, sub ochii lui Moise și sub ochii întregii adunări a copiilor lui Israel, pe când plângeau*Ioel 2:17. la ușa cortului întâlnirii. 7 La vederea acestui*Ps. 106:30. lucru, Fineas, fiul*Exod 6:25. lui Eleazar, fiul preotului Aaron, s-a sculat din mijlocul adunării și a luat o suliță în mână. 8 S-a luat după omul acela din Israel până în cortul lui, i-a străpuns prin pântece pe amândoi: atât pe bărbatul acela din Israel, cât și pe femeia aceea. Și a încetat astfel urgia*Ps. 106:30. care izbucnise printre copiii lui Israel. 9 Douăzeci și patru de mii au murit*Deut. 4:3.1 Cor. 10:8. loviți de urgia aceea. 10 Domnul a vorbit lui Moise și a zis: 11 „Fineas*Ps. 106:30., fiul lui Eleazar, fiul preotului Aaron, a abătut mânia Mea de la copiii lui Israel prin râvna pe care a avut-o pentru Mine în mijlocul lor și n-am nimicit, în mânia*Exod 20:5.Deut. 32:16,21.1 Împ. 14:22.Ps. 78:58.Ezec. 16:38.Ţef. 1:18;3:8. Mea, pe copiii lui Israel. 12 De aceea să spui că închei*Mal. 2:4,5;3:1. cu el un legământ de pace. 13 Acesta va fi pentru el și pentru sămânța*1 Cron. 6:4. lui după el legământul unei preoții*Exod 40:15. veșnice, pentru că a fost plin de râvnă*Fapte 22:3.Rom. 10:2. pentru Dumnezeul lui și a făcut ispășire*Evr. 2:17. pentru copiii lui Israel." 14 Bărbatul acela din Israel care a fost ucis împreună cu madianita se numea Zimri, fiul lui Salu; el era căpetenia unei case părintești a simeoniților. 15 Femeia care a fost ucisă se numea Cozbi, fata lui Țur*Cap. 31:8.Ios. 13:21., căpetenia semințiilor ieșite dintr-o casă părintească din Madian.

16 Domnul a vorbit lui Moise și a zis: 17 „Priviți-i pe*Cap. 31:2. madianiți ca vrăjmași și ucideți-i, 18 căci și ei vi s-au arătat vrăjmași, amăgindu-vă prin vicleșugurile*Cap. 31:16.Apoc. 2:14. lor, în fapta lui Peor și în fapta Cozbiei, fata unei căpetenii a lui Madian, sora lor, ucisă în ziua urgiei care a avut loc cu prilejul faptei lui Peor."
