1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, ruler of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

2 These are the words of the Lord of armies: These people say, The time has not come for building the Lord's house.

3 Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4 Is it a time for you to be living in roofed houses while this house is a waste?

5 For this cause the Lord of armies has said, Give thought to your ways.

6 Much has been planted, but little got in; you take food, but have not enough; you take drink, but are not full; you are clothed, but no one is warm; and he who gets payment for his work, gets it to put it into a bag full of holes.

7 This is what the Lord of armies has said: Give thought to your ways.

8 Go up to the hills and get wood and put up the house; and I will take pleasure in it and be honoured, says the Lord.

9 You were looking for much, and it came to little; and when you got it into your house, I took it away with a breath. Why? says the Lord of armies. Because of my house which is a waste, while every man takes care of the house which is his.

10 For this cause the heaven over you is kept from giving dew, and the earth from giving her fruit.

11 And by my order no rain came on the land or on the mountains or the grain or the wine or the oil or the produce of the earth or on men or cattle or on any work of man's hands.

12 Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the rest of the people, gave ear to the voice of the Lord their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because the Lord their God had sent him, and the people were in fear before the Lord.

13 Then Haggai, whom the Lord had sent to give his words to the people, said, I am with you, says the Lord.

14 And the spirit of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, ruler of Judah, was moved by the Lord, as was the spirit of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the rest of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of armies, their God.

15 On the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

1 Im zweiten Jahre des Königs Darius, im sechsten Monat, am ersten Tage des Monats, geschah das Wort Jehovas durch den Propheten Haggai {Vergl. Esra 5} zu Serubbabel, dem Sohne Schealtiels, dem Landpfleger {O. Stadthalter} von Juda, und zu Josua, dem Sohne Jozadaks, dem Hohenpriester, also:

2 So spricht Jehova der Heerscharen und sagt: Dieses Volk spricht: Die Zeit ist nicht gekommen, die Zeit, daß das Haus Jehovas gebaut werde.

3 Und das Wort Jehovas geschah durch den Propheten Haggai also:

4 Ist es für euch selbst Zeit, in euren getäfelten Häusern zu wohnen, während dieses Haus wüst liegt?

5 Und nun, so spricht Jehova der Heerscharen: Richtet eurer Herz auf eure Wege!

6 Ihr habt viel gesät und wenig eingebracht; ihr esset, aber nicht zur Sättigung; ihr trinket, aber nicht zur Genüge; ihr kleidet euch, aber es wird keinem warm; und der Lohnarbeiter erwirbt Lohn für einen durchlöcherten Beutel.

7 So spricht Jehova der Heerscharen: Richtet euer Herz auf eure Wege!

8 Steiget auf das Gebirge und bringet Holz herbei und bauet das Haus, so werde ich Wohlgefallen daran haben und verherrlicht werden {O. mich verherrlichen} , spricht Jehova.

9 Ihr habt nach vielem ausgeschaut, und siehe, es wurde wenig; und brachtet ihr es heim, so blies ich darein. Weshalb das? spricht Jehova {Eig. ist der Spruch Jehovas; so auch nachher} der Heerscharen; wegen meines Hauses, das {O. weil es} wüst liegt, während ihr laufet, ein jeder für sein eigenes Haus.

10 Darum hat der Himmel den Tau über euch zurückgehalten, und die Erde ihren Ertrag zurückgehalten.

11 Und ich habe eine Dürre gerufen über das Land und über die Berge, und über das Korn und über den Most und über das Öl, und über das, was der Erdboden hervorbringt, und über die Menschen und über das Vieh, und über alle Arbeit der Hände.

12 Und Serubbabel, der Sohn Schealtiels, und Josua, der Sohn Jozadaks, der Hohepriester, und der ganze Überrest des Volkes hörten auf die Stimme Jehovas, ihres Gottes, und auf die Worte des Propheten Haggai, so wie Jehova, ihr Gott, ihn gesandt hatte; und das Volk fürchtete sich vor Jehova.

13 Da sprach Haggai, der Bote Jehovas, vermöge der Botschaft Jehovas, zu dem Volke und sagte: Ich bin mit euch, spricht Jehova.

14 Und Jehova erweckte den Geist Serubbabels, des Sohnes Schealtiels, des Landpflegers von Juda, und den Geist Josuas, des Sohnes Jozadaks, des Hohenpriesters, und den Geist des ganzen Überrestes des Volkes; und sie kamen und arbeiteten {d.h. sie nahmen den Bau wieder in Angriff (welcher unter Cyrus begonnen worden war)} am Hause Jehovas der Heerscharen, ihres Gottes,
