1 After these things, by the order of the king, Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, was lifted up and given a position of honour and a higher place than all the other captains who were with him.

2 And all the king's servants who were in the king's house went down to the earth before Haman and gave him honour: for so the king had given orders. But Mordecai did not go down before him or give him honour.

3 Then the king's servants who were in the king's house said to Mordecai, Why do you go against the king's order?

4 Now when they had said this to him day after day and he gave no attention, they let Haman have news of it, to see if Mordecai's behaviour would be overlooked: for he had said to them that he was a Jew.

5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not go down before him and give him honour, Haman was full of wrath.

6 But it was not enough for him to make an attack on Mordecai only; for they had made clear to him who Mordecai's people were; so Haman made it his purpose to put an end to all the Jews, even Mordecai's people, through all the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

7 In the first month, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, from day to day and from month to month they went on looking for a sign given by Pur (that is chance) before Haman, till the sign came out for the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month Adar.

8 And Haman said to King Ahasuerus, There is a certain nation living here and there in small groups among the people in all the divisions of your kingdom; their laws are different from those of any other nation, and they do not keep the king's laws: for this reason it is not right for the king to let them be.

9 If it is the king's pleasure, let a statement ordering their destruction be put in writing: and I will give to those responsible for the king's business, ten thousand talents of silver for the king's store-house.

10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the hater of the Jews.

11 And the king said to Haman, The money is yours, and the people, to do with them whatever seems right to you.

12 Then on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king's scribes were sent for, and they put in writing Haman's orders to all the king's captains and the rulers of every division of his kingdom and the chiefs of every people: for every division of the kingdom in the writing commonly used there, and to every people in the language which was theirs; it was signed in the name of King Ahasuerus and stamped with the king's ring.

13 And letters were sent by the runners into every division of the kingdom ordering the death and destruction of all Jews, young and old, little children and women, on the same day, even the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month Adar, and the taking of all their goods by force.

14 A copy of the writing, to be made public in every part of the kingdom, was sent out to all the peoples, so that they might be ready when that day came.

15 The runners went out quickly by the king's order, and a public statement was made in Shushan: and the king and Haman took wine together: but the town of Shushan was troubled.

1 Nach diesen Begebenheiten machte der König Ahasveros Haman, den Sohn Hammedathas, den Agagiter, {d.h. wahrsch. vom königlichen Geschlecht der Amalekiter. Agag war der Titel der amalekitischen Könige; vergl. 4. Mose 24,7; 1. Sam. 15,8} groß, und er erhob ihn und setzte seinen Stuhl über alle Fürsten, die bei ihm waren.

2 Und alle Knechte des Königs, die im Tore des Königs waren, beugten sich {O. knieten nieder} und warfen sich nieder vor Haman; denn also hatte der König seinetwegen geboten. Aber Mordokai beugte sich nicht und warf sich nicht nieder.

3 Da sprachen die Knechte des Königs, die im Tore des Königs waren, zu Mordokai: Warum übertrittst du des Königs Gebot?

4 Und es geschah, als sie es Tag für Tag zu ihm sagten, und er nicht auf sie hörte, so berichteten sie es Haman, um zu sehen, ob die Worte {O. die Sachen} Mordokais bestehen würden; denn er hatte ihnen kundgetan, daß er ein Jude wäre.

5 Und als Haman sah, daß Mordokai sich nicht vor ihm beugte und niederwarf, da ward Haman voll Grimmes.

6 Aber er war in seinen Augen verächtlich, die Hand an Mordokai allein zu legen; denn man hatte ihm das Volk Mordokais kundgetan. Und Haman suchte alle Juden, die im ganzen Königreiche des Ahasveros waren, das Volk Mordokais, zu vertilgen.

7 Im ersten Monat, das ist der Monat Nisan, im zwölften Jahre des Königs Ahasveros, warf man das Pur, das ist das Los, vor Haman, von Tag zu Tag und von Monat zu Monat, bis zum zwölften Monat, das ist der Monat Adar.

8 Und Haman sprach zu dem König Ahasveros: Da ist ein Volk, zerstreut und abgesondert unter den Völkern in allen Landschaften deines Königreiches; und ihre Gesetze sind von denen jedes anderen Volkes verschieden, und die Gesetze des Königs tun sie nicht; und es ist für den König nicht geziemend, sie gewähren zu lassen.

9 Wenn es den König gut dünkt, so werde geschrieben, daß man sie umbringe; und ich will zehntausend Talente Silber in die Hände derer darwägen, welche die Geschäfte besorgen, daß sie es in die Schatzkammern {Eig. Schätze; so auch Kap. 4,7} des Königs bringen.

10 Da zog der König seinen Siegelring von seiner Hand und gab ihn Haman, dem Sohne Hammedathas, dem Agagiter, dem Widersacher der Juden.

11 Und der König sprach zu Haman: Das Silber sei dir gegeben, und das Volk, um mit ihm zu tun, wie es gut ist in deinen Augen.

12 Da wurden die Schreiber des Königs berufen im ersten Monat, am dreizehnten Tage desselben; und es wurde nach allem, was Haman gebot, an die Satrapen des Königs geschrieben, und an die Landpfleger über jede Landschaft und an die Fürsten eines jeden Volkes, nach der Schrift jeder einzelnen Landschaft und nach der Sprache jedes einzelnen Volkes; es wurde geschrieben im Namen des Königs Ahasveros und mit dem Siegelringe des Königs untersiegelt.

13 Und die Briefe wurden durch die Eilboten in alle Landschaften des Königs gesandt, um alle Juden zu vertilgen, zu ermorden und umzubringen, vom Knaben bis zum Greise, Kinder und Weiber, an einem Tage, am Dreizehnten des zwölften Monats, das ist der Monat Adar, und um ihre Beute zu plündern.

14 Und auf daß der Befehl {O. das Edikt, der Erlaß} in jeder einzelnen Landschaft erlassen würde, ward eine Abschrift des Schreibens allen Völkern bekannt gemacht, damit sie auf diesen Tag bereit wären.

15 Die Eilboten zogen auf das Wort des Königs eilends aus. Und der Befehl {O. das Edikt, der Erlaß} wurde in der Burg Susan erlassen. Und der König und Haman saßen und tranken; aber die Stadt Susan war in Bestürzung.
