1 Now Jabin, king of Hazor, hearing of these things, sent to Jobab, king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

2 And to the kings on the north in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the highlands of Dor on the west,

3 And to the Canaanites on the east and on the west, and to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill-country, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

4 And they went out, they and all their armies with them, a great people, in number like the sand on the seaside, with horses and war-carriages in great number.

5 And all these kings came together, and put their forces in position at the waters of Merom, to make war on Israel.

6 And the Lord said to Joshua, Have no fear of them: for tomorrow at this time I will give them all up dead before Israel; you are to have the leg-muscles of their horses cut and their war-carriages burned with fire.

7 So Joshua and all the men of war with him came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and made an attack on them.

8 And the Lord gave them up into the hands of Israel, and they overcame them driving them back to great Zidon and to Misrephoth-maim and into the valley of Mizpeh to the east; and they put them all to death, no man got away safely.

9 And Joshua did to them as the Lord had said to him; he had the leg-muscles of their horses cut and their war-carriages burned with fire.

10 At that time, Joshua went on to take Hazor and put its king to the sword: for in earlier times Hazor was the chief of all those kingdoms.

11 And they put every person in it to death without mercy, giving every living thing up to the curse, and burning Hazor.

12 And all the towns of these kings, and all the kings, Joshua took, and put them to the sword: he gave them up to the curse, as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had said.

13 As for the towns made on hills of earth, not one was burned by Israel but Hazor, which was burned by Joshua.

14 And all the goods taken from these towns, and their cattle, the children of Israel kept for themselves; but every man they put to death without mercy, till their destruction was complete, and there was no one living.

15 As the Lord had given orders to Moses his servant, so Moses gave orders to Joshua, and so Joshua did; every order which the Lord had given to Moses was done.

16 So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland and the Arabah, the hill-country of Israel and its lowland;

17 From Mount Halak, which goes up to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under Mount Hermon: and all their kings he overcame and put to death.

18 For a long time Joshua made war on all those kings.

19 Not one town made peace with the children of Israel, but only the Hivites of Gibeon: they took them all in war.

20 For the Lord made them strong in heart to go to war against Israel, so that he might give them up to the curse without mercy, and that destruction might come on them, as the Lord had given orders to Moses.

21 And Joshua came at that time and put an end to the Anakim in the hill-country, in Hebron, in Debir, in Anab, and in all the hill-country of Judah and Israel: Joshua gave them and their towns to the curse.

22 Not one of the Anakim was to be seen in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, some were still living.

23 So Joshua took all the land, as the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it to the children of Israel as their heritage, making division of it among them by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

2 und zu den Königen, die gegen Norden waren im Gebirge und in der Ebene {H. Araba; so auch in den folgenden Kapiteln. S. die Anm. zu 5. Mose 1,1} südlich von Kinneroth und in der Niederung und im Hügelgebiet von Dor gegen Westen,

3 zu den Kanaanitern gegen Osten {Eig. gegen Sonnenaufgang. So auch später} und gegen Westen, und zu den Amoritern und den Hethitern und den Perisitern und den Jebusitern im Gebirge, und zu den Hewitern am Fuße des Hermon im Lande Mizpa.

4 Und sie zogen aus, sie und alle ihre Heerlager mit ihnen, ein großes Volk, wie der Sand, der am Ufer des Meeres ist, an Menge, und sehr viele Rosse und Wagen.

5 Und alle diese Könige trafen zusammen und kamen und lagerten sich miteinander am Wasser Merom, um mit Israel zu streiten.

6 Da sprach Jehova zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen; denn morgen um diese Zeit will ich sie allesamt erschlagen vor Israel dahingeben: ihre Rosse sollst du lähmen und ihre Wagen mit Feuer verbrennen.

7 Und Josua und alles Kriegsvolk mit ihm kam plötzlich über sie am Wasser Merom, und sie überfielen sie.

8 Und Jehova gab sie in die Hand Israels, und sie schlugen sie und jagten ihnen nach bis Zidon, der großen Stadt, und bis Misrephot-Majim und bis in die Talebene von Mizpe gegen Osten; und sie schlugen sie, bis ihnen kein Entronnener übrigblieb.

9 Und Josua tat ihnen, so wie Jehova ihm gesagt hatte: ihre Rosse lähmte er, und ihre Wagen verbrannte er mit Feuer.

10 Und Josua kehrte in selbiger Zeit zurück und nahm Hazor ein, und seinen König erschlug er mit dem Schwerte; denn Hazor war vordem die Hauptstadt aller dieser Königreiche.

11 Und sie schlugen alle Seelen, die darin waren, mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, indem sie sie verbannten: nichts blieb übrig, was Odem hatte; und Hazor verbrannte er mit Feuer.

12 Und alle Städte dieser Könige, samt allen ihren Königen, nahm Josua ein und schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und verbannte sie, so wie Mose, der Knecht Jehovas, geboten hatte.

13 Nur alle die Städte, die auf ihren Hügeln standen, {And.: ruhig bleiben} verbrannte Israel nicht; ausgenommen Hazor allein, das verbrannte Josua.

14 Und alle Beute dieser Städte und das Vieh plünderten die Kinder Israel für sich; doch alle Menschen schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, bis sie sie vertilgt hatten: sie ließen nichts übrig, was Odem hatte.

15 Wie Jehova Mose, seinem Knechte, geboten hatte, also gebot Mose Josua, und also tat Josua; er ließ nichts fehlen von allem, was Jehova dem Mose geboten hatte.

16 Und Josua nahm dieses ganze Land, das Gebirge und den ganzen Süden und das ganze Land Gosen und die Niederung und die Ebene, und das Gebirge Israel und seine Niederung,

17 von dem kahlen Gebirge, {O. dem Berge Chalak} das gegen Seir aufsteigt, bis Baal-Gad in der Talebene des Libanon, am Fuße des Berges Hermon; und alle ihre Könige ergriff er und erschlug sie und tötete sie.

18 Lange Zeit führte Josua Krieg mit allen diesen Königen.

19 Es war keine Stadt, die sich den Kindern Israel friedlich ergab, außer den Hewitern, die zu Gibeon wohnten; alles nahmen sie mit Krieg ein.

20 Denn von Jehova war es, daß sie ihr Herz verhärteten zum Kriege mit Israel, damit sie vertilgt {O. verbannt} würden, ohne daß ihnen Gnade widerführe, sondern damit sie vertilgt würden, so wie Jehova dem Mose geboten hatte.

21 Und Josua kam in selbiger Zeit und rottete die Enakim aus von dem Gebirge, von Hebron, von Debir, von Anab und von dem ganzen Gebirge Juda und von dem ganzen Gebirge Israel: mit ihren Städten verbannte sie Josua.

22 Es blieben keine Enakim in dem Lande der Kinder Israel übrig; nur zu Gasa, zu Gath und zu Asdod blieben sie übrig.

23 Und so nahm Josua das ganze Land, nach allem, was Jehova zu Mose geredet hatte; und Josua gab es Israel zum Erbteil, nach ihren Abteilungen, nach ihren Stämmen. Und das Land hatte Ruhe vom Kriege.
