1 In the seventh year of Jehu's rule, Jehoash became king; and he was ruling for forty years in Jerusalem; his mother's name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2 Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all his days, because he was guided by the teaching of Jehoiada the priest.
3 But the high places were not taken away; the people went on making offerings and burning them in the high places.
4 And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the holy things, which comes into the house of the Lord, (the amount fixed for every man's payment,) and all the money given by any man freely from the impulse of his heart,
5 Let the priests take, every man from his friends and neighbours, to make good what is damaged in the house, wherever it is to be seen.
6 But in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had not made good the damaged parts of the house.
7 Then King Jehoash sent for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said to them, Why have you not made good what is damaged in the house? now take no more money from your neighbours, but give it for the building up of the house.
8 So the priests made an agreement to take no more money from the people, and not to make good what was damaged in the house.
9 But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and making a hole in the cover of it, put it by the altar, on the right side when one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who kept the door put in it regularly all the money which was taken into the house of the Lord.
10 And when they saw that there was much money in the chest, the king's scribe and the high priest came and put it in bags, noting the amount of all the money there was in the house of the Lord.
11 And the money which was measured out they gave regularly to those who were responsible for overseeing the work, and these gave it in payment to the woodworkers and the builders who were working on the house of the Lord,
12 And to the wall-builders and the stone-cutters, and to get wood and cut stone for building up the broken parts of the house of the Lord, and for everything needed to put the house in good order.
13 But the money was not used for making silver cups or scissors or basins or wind-instruments or any vessels of gold or silver for the house of the Lord;
14 But it was all given to the workmen who were building up the house.
15 And they did not get any statement of accounts from the men to whom the money was given for the workmen, for they made use of it with good faith.
16 The money of the offerings for error and the sin-offerings was not taken into the house of the Lord; it was the priests'.
17 Then Hazael, king of Aram, went up against Gath and took it; and his purpose was to go up to Jerusalem.
18 Then Jehoash, king of Judah, took all the holy things which Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah his fathers, the kings of Judah, had given to the Lord, together with the things he himself had given, and all the gold in the Temple store and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael, king of Aram; and he went away from Jerusalem.
19 Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all he did, are they not recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Israel?
20 And his servants made a secret design and put Joash to death at the house of Millo on the way down to Silla.
21 And Jozacar, the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, the son of Shomer, his servants, came to him and put him to death; and they put him into the earth with his fathers in the town of David; and Amaziah his son became king in his place.
1 Und Joas war sieben Jahre alt, da er König ward.
2 Im siebenten Jahr Jehus ward Joas König und regierete vierzig Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Zibea von Bersaba.
3 Und Joas tat, was recht war und dem HErrn wohlgefiel, solange ihn der Priester Jojada lehrete,
4 ohne daß sie die Höhen nicht abtaten; denn das Volk opferte und räucherte noch auf den Höhen.
5 Und Joas sprach zu den Priestern: Alles Geld, das geheiliget wird, daß es in das Haus des HErrn gebracht werde, das gang und gäbe ist, das Geld, so jedermann gibt in der Schätzung seiner Seele, und alles Geld, das jedermann von freiem Herzen opfert, daß es in des HErrn Haus gebracht werde,
6 das laßt die Priester zu sich nehmen, einen jeglichen von seinem Bekannten. Davon sollen sie bessern, was baufällig ist am Hause des HErrn, wo sie finden, das baufällig ist.
7 Da aber die Priester bis ins dreiundzwanzigste Jahr des Königs Joas nicht besserten, was baufällig war am Hause,
8 rief der König Joas dem Priester Jojada samt den Priestern und sprach zu ihnen: Warum bessert ihr nicht, was baufällig ist am Hause? So sollt ihr nun nicht zu euch nehmen das Geld, ein jeglicher von seinen Bekannten, sondern sollt es geben zu dem, das baufällig ist am Hause.
9 Und die Priester bewilligten vom Volk nicht Geld zu nehmen und das Baufällige am Hause zu bessern.
10 Da nahm der Priester Jojada eine Lade und bohrte oben ein Loch drein und setzte sie zur rechten Hand neben den Altar, da man in das Haus des HErrn gehet. Und die Priester, die an der Schwelle hüteten, taten drein alles Geld, das zu des HErrn Haus gebracht ward.
11 Wenn sie dann sahen, daß viel Geld in der Lade war, so kam des Königs Schreiber herauf mit dem Hohenpriester und banden das Geld zusammen und zählten es, was für des HErrn Haus funden ward.
12 Und man gab das Geld bar über denen, die da arbeiteten und bestellet waren zum Hause des HErrn; und sie gaben‘s heraus den Zimmerleuten, die da baueten und arbeiteten am Hause des HErrn,
13 nämlich den Maurern und Steinmetzen, und die da Holz und gehauene Steine kauften, daß das Baufällige am Hause des HErrn gebessert wurde, und alles, was sie fanden am Hause zu bessern not sein.
14 Doch ließ man nicht machen silberne Schalen, Psalter, Becken, Trommeten noch irgend ein gülden oder silbern Gerät im Hause des HErrn von solchem Gelde, das zu des HErrn Hause gebracht ward,
15 sondern man gab‘s den Arbeitern, daß sie damit das Baufällige am Hause des HErrn besserten.
16 Auch durften die Männer nicht berechnen, denen man das Geld tat, daß sie es den Arbeitern gäben, sondern sie handelten auf Glauben.
17 Aber das Geld von Schuldopfern und Sündopfern ward nicht zum Hause des HErrn gebracht; denn es war der Priester.
18 Zu der Zeit zog Hasael, der König zu Syrien, herauf und stritt wider Gath und gewann sie. Und da Hasael sein Angesicht stellete, zu Jerusalem hinaufzuziehen,
19 nahm Joas, der König Judas, all das Geheiligte, das seine Väter, Josaphat, Joram und Ahasja, die Könige Judas, geheiliget hatten, und was er geheiliget hatte, dazu alles Gold, das man fand im Schatz in des HErrn Hause und in des Königs Hause, und schickte es Hasael, dem Könige zu Syrien. Da zog er ab von Jerusalem.
20 Was aber mehr von Joas zu sagen ist, und alles, was er getan hat, das ist geschrieben in der Chronik der Könige Judas.
21 Und seine Knechte empörten sich und machten einen Bund und schlugen ihn im Hause Millo, da man hinabgehet zu Silla.
22 Denn Josabar, der Sohn Simeaths, und Josabad, der Sohn Somers, seine Knechte, schlugen ihn tot. Und man begrub ihn mit seinen Vätern in der Stadt Davids. Und Amazia, sein Sohn, ward König an seiner Statt.
