1 Let the horn be sounded in Zion, and a war-cry in my holy mountain; let all the people of the land be troubled: for the day of the Lord is coming;
2 For a day of dark and deep shade is near, a day of cloud and black night: like a black cloud a great and strong people is covering the mountains; there has never been any like them and will not be after them again, from generation to generation.
3 Before them fire sends destruction, and after them flame is burning: the land is like the garden of Eden before them, and after them an unpeopled waste; truly, nothing has been kept safe from them.
4 Their form is like the form of horses, and they are running like war-horses.
5 Like the sound of war-carriages they go jumping on the tops of the mountains; like the noise of a flame of fire burning up the grain-stems, like a strong people lined up for the fight.
6 At their coming the people are bent with pain: all faces become red together.
7 They are running like strong men, they go over the wall like men of war; every man goes straight on his way, their lines are not broken.
8 No one is pushing against another; everyone goes straight on his way: bursting through the sword points, their order is not broken.
9 They make a rush on the town, running on the wall; they go up into the houses and in through the windows like a thief.
10 The earth is troubled before them and the heavens are shaking: the sun and the moon have become dark, and the stars keep back their shining:
11 And the Lord is thundering before his forces; for very great is his army; for he is strong who gives effect to his word: for the day of the Lord is great and greatly to be feared, and who has strength against it?
12 But even now, says the Lord, come back to me with all your heart, keeping from food, with weeping and with sorrow:
13 Let your hearts be broken, and not your clothing, and come back to the Lord your God: for he is full of grace and pity, slow to be angry and great in mercy, ready to be turned from his purpose of punishment.
14 May it not be that he will again let his purpose be changed and let a blessing come after him, even a meal offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?
15 Let a horn be sounded in Zion, let a time be fixed for going without food, have a holy meeting:
16 Get the people together, make the mass of the people holy, send for the old men, get together the children and babies at the breast: let the newly married man come out of his room and the bride from her tent.
17 Let the priests, the servants of the Lord, be weeping between the covered way and the altar, and let them say, Have mercy on your people, O Lord, do not give up your heritage to shame, so that the nations become their rulers: why let them say among the peoples, Where is their God?
18 Then the Lord had a care for the honour of his land and had pity on his people.
19 And the Lord made answer and said to his people, See, I will send you grain and wine and oil in full measure: and I will no longer let you be shamed among the nations:
20 I will send the one from the north far away from you, driving him into a dry and waste land, with his front to the sea of the east and his back to the sea of the west, and the smell of him will go up, even his evil smell will go up.
21 Have no fear, O land; be glad with great joy; for the Lord has done great things.
22 Have no fear, you beasts of the field, for the grass-lands of the waste are becoming green, for the trees are producing fruit, the fig-tree and the vine give out their strength.
23 Be glad, then, you children of Zion, and have joy in the Lord your God: for he gives you food in full measure, making the rain come down for you, the early and the late rain as at the first.
24 And the floors will be full of grain, and the crushing-places overflowing with wine and oil.
25 I will give back to you the years which were food for the locust, the plant-worm, the field-fly, and the worm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 You will have food in full measure, and give praise to the name of the Lord your God, who has done wonders for you:
27 And you will be certain that I am in Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and there is no other: and my people will never be shamed.
1 Toquem as trombetas em sinal de alarme em Jerusalém! Que se ouçam o seu som sobre a minha santa montanha! Que toda a gente trema de medo, porque o dia do julgamento do Senhor se aproxima.
2 Será um dia de escuridão e de tristeza, de espessas nuvens e de escuridão. Que poderoso exército! Cobre os montes, tal como a noite! Que grande e que poderoso é este povo! A aparência dessas gentes nunca foi vista anteriormente, e nunca será vista de novo por todas as gerações que passarem na Terra!
3 Corre fogo diante deles, e segue-os também por todos os lados. Têm na frente uma bela terra, tal como o jardim de Éden, em toda a sua beleza. Depois de passarem, apenas ficou uma terra inteiramente destruída; nada lhes escapou.
4 Parecem-se com ligeiros cavalos correndo com muita rapidez.
5 Vejam-nos saltando sobre o cimo dos montes! Ouçam o barulho que fazem, semelhante ao ruído de carros de guerra, e ao do fogo queimando tudo através de um campo, e também ao de um poderoso exército correndo para a batalha.
6 O terror apodera-se dos povos que os esperam; empalidecem de medo.
7 Estes soldados atacam como comandos de infantaria. Escalam muros como tropa bem treinada. Avançam sem nada os deter. Não há nenhum a tolher os movimentos do companheiro. Cada um conhece bem aquilo que deve executar. Não há arma que possa detê-los.
9 Carregam sobre a cidade; sobem às muralhas; trepam às casas, entrando como ladrões pelas janelas.
10 A terra treme perante eles, e os céus também. O Sol e a Lua escureceram e as estrelas esconderam-se.
11 O Senhor conduz este exército com a sua voz. Este é o seu poderoso exército, que segue as suas ordens. O dia do julgamento do Senhor é algo de terrível, de tremendo. Quem poderá suportá-lo?
12 É por isso que o Senhor diz, Voltem-se agora para mim, enquanto é tempo. Dêem-me todo o vosso coração. Aproximem-se com jejum, com choro e lamentações.
13 Que o vosso remorso vos leve a dilacerar-vos o coração e não a rasgar a roupa. Convertam-se ao Senhor vosso Deus, porque é compassivo e misericordioso. Não é facilmente que se acende a sua ira; está cheio de mansidão e ancioso por não ter que castigar.
14 Quem sabe se não desistirá das suas intenções a vosso respeito, e se não acabará por vos abençoar em vez de vos punir severamente. Talvez vos abençoe de tal maneira que venham a ter novamente abundância de cereais e de vinho para oferecerem ao Senhor como dantes!
15 Toquem a trombeta em Sião! Convoquem um jejum e reúnam todo o povo para uma assembleia solene. Tragam todos - os anciãos, as crianças e até os bebés. Tragam o noivo para fora dos seus aposentos, acompanhado da sua noiva.
17 Os sacerdotes, os ministros do Senhor, pôr-se-ão entre o povo e o altar, chorando. Orarão desta forma! Poupa, Senhor, o teu povo; não permitas que os pagãos os dominem, pois que te pertencem. Não deixes que sejam alvo de desprezo dos pagãos que dizem, 'Onde está esse Deus?'
18 Então o Senhor terá piedade de vocês, o seu povo, e terá zelo pela honra da sua terra.
19 Responderá assim: Vejam, estou a mandar-vos muito trigo, vinho e azeite, para satisfazer plenamente as vossas necessidades. Nunca mais deixarei que se tornem objecto da mofa entre as nações.
20 Farei partir esses exércitos que vêm do norte; mandá-los-ei para longe; irão para as terras desoladas donde vieram e lá morrerão; metade dirigir-se-á para o Mar Morto e o resto para o Mediterrâneo; o seu mau cheiro subirá da terra.O Senhor fez um poderoso milagre a vosso favor.
21 Não tenham receio, meu povo; alegrem-se e regozijem-se, porque fez coisas maravilhosas a vosso favor.
22 Que os rebanhos e o gado esqueçam a fome por que passaram; as pastagens tornar-se-ão verdes de novo. As árvores darão o seu fruto; as figueiras e as vinhas florescerão uma vez mais.
23 Alegra-te, ó povo de Jerusalém, alegra-te no Senhor teu Deus. As chuvas que ele mandar são penhores do seu perdão. Uma vez mais cairão as chuvas do Outono, assim como as da Primavera.
24 As eiras terão novamente trigo empilhado e os lagares transbordarão de azeite e de vinho.
25 Devolver-vos-ei aquilo que os gafanhotos comeram - esse grande exército destruidor que enviei contra vocês.
26 De novo terão toda a comida de que necessitarem. Louvem o Senhor, que faz estes milagres para vocês. Nunca mais o meu povo experimentará desastres semelhantes a este.
27 E saberão que estou aqui, entre o meu povo de Israel, e que só eu sou o Senhor vosso Deus. O meu povo nunca mais será ferido com um golpe desta natureza.
28 Depois de ter derramado chuvas novamente, derramarei o meu Espírito sobre vocês todos! Os vossos filhos e filhas profetizarão; os vossos velhos terão sonhos reveladores e os vossos jovens, visões.
29 Derramarei o meu Espírito mesmo sobre os que são escravos, tanto homens como mulheres;
30 porei estranhos sinais no céu e na terra - sangue, fogo e colunas de fumo.
31 O Sol escurecerá e a Lua ficará vermelha como o sangue, perante o grande e terrível dia do Senhor que há-de vir.
32 Todo aquele que invocar o nome do Senhor será salvo. Mesmo em Jerusalém alguns escaparão, tal como o Senhor prometeu, porque escolheu alguns para sobreviverem.
