1 Det drar op mot dig en som vil sprede dig til alle kanter; vokt festningen, sku ut på veien, styrk dine lender, samle all din kraft! 2 For Herren fører Jakobs høihet tilbake likesom Israels høihet, for ransmenn har plyndret dem og ødelagt deres vintrær. 3 Hans kjempers skjold er rødfarvede, stridsmennene er klædd i skarlagen, vognene i luende stål på den dag han stiller dem op, og spydene svinges. 4 På gatene raser vognene avsted, de styrter frem over torvene; de er som bluss å se til, som lyn farer de frem. 5 Han kommer i hu sine gjæve menn; de snubler under sin gang, de haster avsted til bymuren, men skjoldtaket er reist. 6 Portene ut mot elvene blir åpnet, og palasset forgår av angst. 7 Og det står fast: Hun {Ninive fremstilt som en kvinne.} blir avklædd, ført bort, og hennes piker kurrer som duer og slår sig for sitt bryst. 8 Og Ninive er som en dam full av vann {en folkerik stad.} like fra de dager det blev til. Men nu flyr de. Stans, stans! Men ingen vender sig om. 9 Røv sølv, røv gull! For det er ingen ende på skattene, en overflod av allehånde kostelige ting! 10 Tomt, tømt, uttømt! (-)forferdede hjerter og vaklende knær og verk i alle lender, og alles ansikter er blussende røde.

11 Hvor er nu løvenes bolig, det sted hvor de unge løver fortærte sitt rov, hvor løven og løvinnen ferdedes og løveungen, og det var ingen som skremte dem?

12 Hvor er løven, som røvet til dens unger hadde nok, og myrdet for sine løvinner og fylte sine huler med rov og sine boliger med det den hadde sønderrevet? 13 Se, jeg kommer over dig, sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, og jeg vil brenne dine vogner så de går op i røk, og dine unge løver skal sverdet fortære; og jeg vil utrydde ditt rov av jorden, og dine sendebuds røst skal ikke mere høres.

11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid? 12 The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. 13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
