1 Iona s'a rugat Domnului, Dumnezeului său, din pîntecele peştelui,2 şi a zis: ,,În strîmtorarea mea, am chemat pe Domnul, şi m'a ascultat; din mijlocul locuinţei morţilor am strigat, şi mi-ai auzit glasul.3 Şi totuş mă aruncasei în adînc, în inima mării, şi rîurile de apă mă înconjuraseră; toate valurile şi toate talazurile Tale au trecut peste mine.4 Ziceam: ,,Sînt lepădat dinaintea ochilor Tăi! Dar iarăş voi vedea Templul Tău cel sfînt``.5 Apele m'au acoperit pînă aproape să-mi ia viaţa, adîncul m'a învăluit, papura s'a împletit în jurul capului meu.6 M'am pogorît pînă la temeliile munţilor, zăvoarele pămîntului mă încuiau pe vecie; dar Tu m'ai scos viu din groapă, Doamne, Dumnezeul meu!7 Cînd îmi tînjea sufletul în mine, mi-am adus aminte de Domnul, şi rugăciunea mea a ajuns pînă la Tine, în Templul Tău ce sfînt.8 Ceice se lipesc de idoli deşerţi îndepărtează îndurarea dela ei.9 Eu însă Îţi voi aduce jertfe cu un strigăt de mulţămire, voi împlini juruinţele pe cari le-am făcut. Mîntuirea vine dela Domnul.``10 Domnul a vorbit peştelui, şi peştele a vărsat pe Iona pe pămînt.

1 \1:17\And the Lord made ready a great fish to take Jonah into its mouth; and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.2 \2:1\Then Jonah made prayer to the Lord his God from the inside of the fish, and said,3 \2:2\In my trouble I was crying to the Lord, and he gave me an answer; out of the deepest underworld I sent up a cry, and you gave ear to my voice.4 \2:3\For you have put me down into the deep, into the heart of the sea; and the river was round about me; all your waves and your rolling waters went over me.5 \2:4\And I said, I have been sent away from before your eyes; how may I ever again see your holy Temple?6 \2:5\The waters were circling round me, even to the neck; the deep was about me; the sea-grass was twisted round my head.7 \2:6\I went down to the bases of the mountains; as for the earth, her walls were about me for ever: but you have taken up my life from the underworld, O Lord my God.8 \2:7\When my soul in me was overcome, I kept the memory of the Lord: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy Temple.9 \2:8\The worshippers of false gods have given up their only hope.10 \2:9\But I will make an offering to you with the voice of praise; I will give effect to my oaths. Salvation is the Lord's.11 \2:10\And at the Lord's order, the fish sent Jonah out of its mouth on to the dry land.
