1 Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ. 11:1 Php 2:5; 1Pt 2:21
Instructions about Head Coverings
2 Now I praise you 11:2 Other mss add brothers, because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions 11:2 2Th 2:15; 3:6 just as I delivered 11:2 Jd 3 them to you. 3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head 11:3 Eph 1:22; 4:15; Col 1:18; 2:10,19 of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, 11:3 Or the husband is the head of the wife, 11:3 Gn 3:16; Eph 5:23 and God is the head of Christ. 11:3 1Co 3:234 Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors 11:4 1Pt 3:16 his head. 5 Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved. 11:5 Dt 21:11–126 For if a woman doesn’t cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her head be covered.
7 A man should not cover his head, because he is the image 11:7 Gn 1:27 and glory of God. 11:7 Mk 10:37; Lk 9:32; Jn 17:24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18 So too, woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. 11:8 Gn 2:21–23; 1Tm 2:139 Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. 10 This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman. 12 For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman, and all things come from God. 11:12 Ps 104:24; Rv 3:14
13 Judge 11:13 Jn 5:22–30 for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach 11:14 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace 11:14 2Co 6:8 to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? 11:15 Php 3:19 For her hair is given to her 11:15 Other mss omit to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to argue about this, we have no other 11:16 Or no such custom, nor do the churches of God.
The Lord’s Supper
17 Now in giving this instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 Indeed, it is necessary that there be factions 11:19 2Pt 2:1 among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you. 20 When you come together, then, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. 11:20 Mt 26:26–29; Mk 14:22–25; Lk 22:14–20; 1Co 10:14–2221 For at the meal, each one eats his own supper. 11:21 Or eats his own supper ahead of others So one person is hungry while another gets drunk! 22 Don’t you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter!
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: 11:23 Jd 3 On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, 11:24 Other mss add "Take, eat."This is my body, which is 11:24 Other mss add brokenfor you. Do this in remembrance of me." 11:24 Lk 22:19
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, "This cup is the new covenant 11:25 Lk 22:20in my blood. 11:25 Jn 6:54Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death 11:26 Php 2:8; 3:10 until he comes. 11:26 Mk 8:38
Self-Examination
27 So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body 11:27 Lit be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, 11:29 Other mss read drinks unworthily, not discerning the Lord’s body eats and drinks judgment 11:29 Mk 12:40; 1Jn 5:16 on himself. 30 This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep. 11:30 Jn 11:11; Ac 7:60; 1Th 4:13–1531 If we were properly judging ourselves, we would not be judged, 32 but when we are judged 11:32 Jn 5:22–30 by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we may not be condemned 11:32 Mt 12:41; Jn 5:22 with the world.
33 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, welcome one another. 11:33 Or wait for one another34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather together you will not come under judgment. I will give instructions about the other matters whenever I come. 11:34 1Co 4:19
