2 Kings 22

Judah’s King Josiah

1 Josiah  22:1–2 2Ch 34:1–2 was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath 22:1 Jos 15:392 He did what was right in the Lords sight and walked in all the ways of his ancestor David 22:2 1Kg 14:8 he did not turn to the right or the left 22:2 Dt 5:32; Jos 1:7

Josiah Repairs the Temple

3 In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent the court secretary Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, to the Lords temple 22:3 2Ch 34:8 saying, 4 "Go up to the high priest Hilkiah so that he may total up the silver brought into the Lords temple — the silver the doorkeepers have collected from the people 22:4 2Kg 12:4,9–105 It is to be given to those doing the work — those who oversee the Lords temple. They in turn are to give it to the workmen in the Lords temple to repair the damage 22:5 2Kg 12:56 They are to give it to the carpenters, builders, and masons to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the temple 22:6 2Kg 12:11–127 But no accounting is to be required from them for the silver given to them since they work with integrity. 22:7 2Kg 12:15; 1Co 4:2

The Book of the Law Found

8 The high priest Hilkiah told the court secretary Shaphan, "I have found the book of the law  22:8 Dt 31:24–26; 2Ch 34:14–15 in the Lords temple," and he gave the book to Shaphan, who read it.

9 Then the court secretary Shaphan went to the king and reported 22:9 Lit and returned a word to the king and said "Your servants have emptied out the silver that was found in the temple and have given it to those doing the work — those who oversee the Lords temple." 10 Then the court secretary Shaphan told the king, "The priest Hilkiah has given me a book," and Shaphan read it in the presence of the king 22:10 Dt 17:18–20

11 When the king heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes 22:11 Gn 37:34; Jos 7:612 Then he commanded the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam  22:12 2Kg 25:22; Jr 26:24 son of Shaphan, Achbor  22:12 2Ch 34:20 son of Micaiah, the court secretary Shaphan, and the king’s servant Asaiah, 13 "Go and inquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah about the words in this book that has been found. For great is the Lords wrath that is kindled against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words of this book in order to do everything written about us. 22:13 Dt 29:24–28; 31:17–18

Huldah’s Prophecy of Judgment

14 So  22:14–20 2Ch 34:22–28 the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the prophetess  22:14 Ex 15:20 Huldah, wife of Shallum son of Tikvah 22:14 2Ch 34:22 son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem in the Second District 22:14 Zph 1:10 They spoke with her.

15 She said to them, "This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Say to the man who sent you to me, 16 This is what the Lord says: I am about to bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, fulfilling  22:16 fulfilling supplied for clarity all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read 22:16 Dt 29:27; Dn 9:11–1417 because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods in order to anger me with all the work of their hands. My wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’  22:17 Dt 29:25–26; 1Kg 9:918 Say this to the king of Judah who sent you to inquire of the Lord: This is what the Lord God of Israel says: As for the words that you heard 22:18 2Ch 34:2619 because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the Lord 22:19 1Sm 24:5; 1Kg 21:29 when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse 22:19 Dt 28:15; Jr 26:6 and because you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I myself have heard’ — this is the Lords declaration. 20 Therefore, I will indeed gather you to your ancestors, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace 22:20 2Kg 20:19; 23:30 Your eyes will not see all the disaster that I am bringing on this place.’ "

Then they reported  22:20 Lit returned a word to the king.
