Amos 1

1 The words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeders  * 1:1 Or the shepherds,* 1:1 2Kg 3:4; Am 7:14–15 from Tekoa  * 1:1 2Sm 14:2; Jr 6:1  — what he saw regarding Israel in the days of King Uzziah  * 1:1 2Kg 15:1–7; 2Ch 26:1–23; Is 1:1; Hs 1:1 of Judah and Jeroboam  * 1:1 2Kg 14:23–29 son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.  * 1:1 Zch 14:5

2 He said:

The Lord roars  * 1:2 Is 42:13; Jr 25:30; Jl 3:16; Am 3:8 from Zion

and makes his voice heard from Jerusalem;

the pastures of the shepherds mourn,  * 1:2 Or dry up,* 1:2 Is 24:4–7; Jr 12:4; 23:10; Jl 1:10,18–19

and the summit of Carmel  * 1:2 Am 9:3  withers.

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

3 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Damascus  * 1:3 Is 17:1–3

for three crimes, even four,  * 1:3 Pr 30:15–29; Am 2:1,4,6

because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.

4 Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,

and it will consume Ben-hadad’s  * 1:4 2Kg 8:11–15; 13:3,22,24  citadels.

5 I will break down the gates  * 1:5 Lit gate bars,* 1:5 Gn 22:17; Neh 1:3; Lm 2:9; Hs 11:6; Nah 3:13 of Damascus.

I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,

and the one who wields the scepter from Beth-eden.

The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir.  * 1:5 2Kg 16:9; Am 9:7

The Lord has spoken.

6 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Gaza  * 1:6 Jr 47:1,4–5; Ezk 25:15–17

for three crimes, even four,

because they exiled a whole community,

handing them over to Edom.

7 Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Gaza,

and it will consume its citadels.

8 I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,  * 1:8 2Ch 26:6; Am 3:9; Zch 9:6

and the one who wields the scepter from Ashkelon.  * 1:8 Jr 47:5; Zph 2:4

I will also turn my hand against Ekron,

and the remainder of the Philistines  * 1:8 Is 14:29–31; Ezk 25:16 will perish.

The Lord God has spoken.

9 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Tyre  * 1:9 Is 23; Ezk 26:1–28:19

for three crimes, even four,

because they handed over

a whole community of exiles to Edom

and broke  * 1:9 Lit and did not remember a treaty of brotherhood.  * 1:9 1Kg 5:1,12; 9:11–14

10 Therefore, I will send fire  * 1:10 Zch 9:4 against the walls of Tyre,

and it will consume its citadels.

11 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Edom  * 1:11 Jr 49:8–22; Ezk 25:12–14

for three crimes, even four,

because he pursued his brother with the sword.  * 1:11 Nm 20:14; Dt 2:4; 23:7; Ob 10–14

He stifled his compassion,

his anger tore at him  * 1:11 Gn 37:33; Ps 7:2; Hs 5:14  continually,

and he harbored his rage incessantly.

12 Therefore, I will send fire against Teman,  * 1:12 Jr 49:7,20

and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.

13 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing the Ammonites  * 1:13 Jr 49:1–6; Ezk 25:1–7; Zph 2:8–11

for three crimes, even four,

because they ripped open

the pregnant women of Gilead  * 1:13 2Kg 8:12; 15:16; Hs 13:16

in order to enlarge their territory.  * 1:13 Is 5:8; Ezk 35:10

14 Therefore, I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah,  * 1:14 1Ch 20:1; Jr 49:2

and it will consume its citadels.

There will be shouting on the day of battle  * 1:14 Ezk 21:22; Am 2:2

and a violent wind on the day of the storm.  * 1:14 Is 29:6; 30:30

15 Their king and his princes

will go into exile together.  * 1:15 Jr 49:3
