Revelation 16

The First Bowl

1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels 16:1 Rv 8:2,6; 15:1,6–8 "Go and pour out the seven  16:1 Other mss omit seven bowls  16:1 Rv 17:1; 21:9 of God’s wrath on the earth." 2 The first went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and severely painful sores  16:2 Ex 9:9–11; Dt 28:27,35; Jb 2:7; Is 1:6; Jr 30:12–17 broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped its image.

The Second Bowl

3 The second  16:3 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl into the sea. It turned to blood like that of a dead person, and all life in the sea died 16:3 Rv 8:8–9

The Third Bowl

4 The third  16:4 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood 16:4 Ex 7:17–215 I heard the angel of the waters say,

You are just,

the Holy One 16:5 Is 5:19; 41:20; 45:11 who is and who was 16:5 Rv 11:17

because you have passed judgment on these things.

6 Because they poured out

the blood of the saints and the prophets 16:6 2Kg 9:7; Mt 23:30; Lk 11:50; Rv 17:6; 18:24

you have given them blood to drink;

they deserve it 16:6 Is 49:26

7 I heard the altar say,

Yes, Lord God, the Almighty,

true and just are your judgments 16:7 Ps 19:9; Rv 19:2

The Fourth Bowl

8 The fourth  16:8 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl on the sun. It was allowed to scorch people with fire, 9 and people were scorched by the intense heat. So they blasphemed the name of God 16:9 Lv 24:11; Is 52:5; Rm 2:24; 1Tm 6:1; Rv 13:6 who has the power  16:9 Or authority over these plagues, and they did not repent and give him glory 16:9 Rv 9:20–21

The Fifth Bowl

10 The fifth  16:10 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast 16:10 Rv 2:13; 13:2 and its kingdom was plunged into darkness 16:10 Ex 10:21 People  16:10 Lit They gnawed their tongues because of their pain 11 and blasphemed the God of heaven  16:11 Rv 13:6 because of their pains and their sores, but they did not repent of their works.

The Sixth Bowl

12 The sixth  16:12 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates 16:12 Gn 2:14; 15:18; Dt 11:24; 1Kg 4:21; Rv 9:14 and its water was dried up  16:12 Ex 14:21–22,29; 15:19; Jos 2:10; 4:23; 5:1; 2Kg 2:8; Neh 9:11; Is 51:10 to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 Then I saw three unclean spirits like frogs  16:13 Ex 8:2–14; Lv 11:9–12,41–47 coming from the dragon’s mouth 16:13 Rv 12:9 from the beast’s mouth 16:13 Rv 13:1 and from the mouth of the false prophet 16:13 Rv 13:11–1714 For they are demonic spirits performing signs 16:14 2Th 2:9–10 who travel to the kings of the whole world to assemble them  16:14 1Kg 22:20–23; Mt 24:24; 2Th 2:10 for the battle on the great day of God, the Almighty 16:14 Ezk 38–39; Jl 2:11; 3:2; Zch 14:2; Rv 19:11–2115 "Look, I am coming like a thief. The Seventh Bowl

17 Then the seventh  16:17 Other mss add angel poured out his bowl into the air 16:17 Or bowl on the air and a loud voice came out of the temple  16:17 Other mss add of heaven, 16:17 Is 66:6 from the throne, saying, "It is done" 18 There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. And a severe earthquake occurred like no other since people have been on the earth, so great was the quake 16:18 Ex 19:16–19; Rv 4:5; 8:5; 11:1919 The great city  16:19 Rv 18:10,16,18–19,21 split into three parts, and the cities of the nations  16:19 Or the Gentile cities fell. Babylon the Great was remembered in God’s presence; he gave her the cup filled with the wine of his fierce anger 16:19 Rv 14:19; 19:1520 Every island fled, and the mountains disappeared 16:20 Ezk 38:20; Rv 6:1421 Enormous hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds 16:21 Lit about a talent; talents varied in weight upwards from 75 pounds fell from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God  16:21 Rv 16:9,11 for the plague of hail because that plague was extremely severe 16:21 Jos 10:11; Ezk 38:22
