Lucas 17

Warnings from Jesus

1 He  17:1–3 Mt 18:6–7; Mk 9:42; 1Co 11:19 said to his disciples, "Offenses will certainly come, 17:1 Lit "It is impossible for offenses not to comebut woe 17:1 Lk 22:22to the one through whom they come! 17:1 Mt 13:412 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 17:2 1Co 8:93 Be 17:3–4 Mt 18:15,21–22on your guard. Faith and Duty

5 The  17:5–6 Mt 17:19–20; Mk 9:28–29 apostles  17:5 Lk 6:13 said to the Lord, "Increase our faith. 17:5 Mk 9:24

6 "If you have faith the size of 17:6 Lit faith likea mustard seed," 17:6 Mt 13:31; Mk 4:31; Lk 13:19 the Lord said, "you can say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea,and it will obey you.

7 "Which one of you having a servant tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, Come at once and sit down to eat?8 Instead, will he not tell him, Prepare something for me to eat, get ready, and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink? 17:8 Lk 12:35–379 Does he thank that servant because he did what was commanded? 17:9 Other mss add I don’t think so10 In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, We are unworthy 17:10 Jb 22:2–3; 35:7; Mt 25:30; Rm 11:35servants; we’ve only done our duty.’ "

Ten Men Healed

11 While traveling to Jerusalem 17:11 Lk 9:51 he passed between  17:11 Or through the middle of Samaria and Galilee 17:11 Jn 4:3–412 As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy  17:12 Gk lepros; a term for various skin diseases; see Lv 13–14, 17:12 Lv 13:45–46 met him. They stood at a distance 13 and raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master 17:13 Lk 5:5 have mercy on us"

14 When he saw them, he told them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." 17:14 Lv 13:2–14:32; Mt 8:4; Lk 5:14 And while they were going, they were cleansed.

15 But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God 17:15 Mt 9:8; Mk 2:12; Lk 2:14; 5:26; Jn 9:24; Ac 4:21; 12:23; Rm 4:2016 He fell facedown  17:16 1Sm 20:41; 2Sm 14:22; Mt 17:6; 1Co 14:25 at his feet, thanking him. 17 Then Jesus said, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?18 Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner"19 And he told him, "Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you." 17:19 Or faith has made you well, 17:19 Mt 9:22; Mk 10:52; Lk 5:20; 18:42

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 When he was  17:20–21 Mt 24:23; Mk 13:21 asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come 17:20 Lk 19:11; Ac 1:6 he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable; 21 no one will say, 17:21 Lit they will not saySee hereor ThereFor you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst." 17:21 Or within you

22 Then he told the disciples, "The days are coming 17:22 Dt 32:35; Is 2:12; Jr 7:32; Am 4:2; Lk 5:35; 19:43; 21:6; 23:29when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won’t see it. 17:22 Am 5:1823 They will say to you, 17:23–24 Mt 24:23,27; Mk 13:21See thereor See hereDon’t follow or run after them. 17:23 Lk 21:824 For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in his day. 17:24 1Co 1:825 But first it is necessary that he suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 17:25 Mt 16:21; Lk 9:22

26 "Just as it was in the days of Noah, 17:26–27 Mt 24:37–38so it will be in the days of the Son of Man: 27 People went on eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage 17:27 Lk 20:34–35until the day Noah boarded the ark, 17:27 Gn 6:14and the flood came and destroyed them all.28 It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot: 17:28 Gn 19:1–26People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building.29 But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed 17:29 Gn 19:24–25them all.30 It 17:30–35 Mt 24:17,39–41; Mk 13:15will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 17:30 Mt 16:27; 24:44; 1Co 1:7; 2Th 1:7; 1Pt 1:7; 4:1331 On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them.
