Resurrection Morning
1 On 24:1–12 Mt 28:1–10; Mk 16:1–11; Jn 20:1–18 the first day of the week, 24:1 Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 very early in the morning, they 24:1 Other mss add and other women with them came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 They went in but did not find the body 24:3 Lk 12:4 of the Lord Jesus. 24:3 Lk 7:13; Ac 1:214 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling 24:4 Lk 2:9; 17:24; Ac 12:7 clothes. 5 So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
"Why are you looking for the living among the dead? " asked the men. 6 "He is not here, but he has risen! 24:6 Mt 26:32; Mk 5:41; 9:27; Jn 2:19; 1Co 15:4 Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, 24:6 Mt 17:22–23; Mk 9:30–31; Lk 9:22,447 saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed 24:7 Lk 9:22,31,44; 18:32–33; 23:21into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise 24:7 Mt 17:9,23; Mk 8:31; 9:31; 10:34; Lk 18:33; 24:46on the third day’? " 8 And they remembered his words.
9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven 24:9 Ac 1:15–26; 2:14 and to all the rest. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, 24:10 Mk 15:40; 16:1; Lk 8:2–3 and the other women with them were telling the apostles 24:10 Lk 6:13 these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe 24:11 Mt 28:17; Lk 24:41; Jn 20:25,27 the women. 12 Peter, 24:12 Lk 6:14; Ac 10:32 however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. 24:12 Other mss add lying there, 24:12 Lk 23:53 So he went away, amazed 24:12 Lk 1:21,63; 2:18,33; 4:22; Ac 2:7; 3:12 at what had happened.
The Emmaus Disciples
13 Now 24:13 Mk 16:12–13 that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles 24:13 Lit about sixty stadia; one stadion = 600 feet, 24:13 Rv 21:16 from Jerusalem. 24:13 Mt 23:37; Ac 8:114 Together they were discussing everything that had taken place. 15 And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk along with them. 16 But they 24:16 Lit their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 24:16 Lk 9:45; 18:34; Jn 20:14–15; 21:417 Then he asked them, "What is this dispute that you’re having 24:17 Lit "What are these words that you are exchangingwith each other as you are walking? " And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.
18 The one named Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days? " 24:18 Ac 26:26
19 "What things? " he asked them.
So they said to him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, 24:19 Lk 4:34; 18:37; Ac 2:22 who was a prophet 24:19 Dt 18:15; Lk 4:24 powerful in action and speech 24:19 Lk 4:14; Ac 1:1; 2:22 before God and all the people, 24:19 Lk 18:4320 and how our chief priests and leaders 24:20 Lk 23:13 handed him over to be sentenced to death, 24:20 Lk 9:44; 18:32; Ac 3:13; 13:27–28 and they crucified him. 24:20 Lk 23:21,25; Ac 5:3021 But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem 24:21 Lk 22:20; Ac 1:6 Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day 24:21 Lk 9:22; 13:32; 18:33 since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, 23 and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him." 24:24 Lk 24:12; Jn 20:2–10
25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow 24:25 Lit slow of heartto believe all that the prophets have spoken! 24:25 Lk 16:31; 18:31; Ac 26:27; 2Pt 1:2126 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer 24:26 Lk 24:44–48; 1Co 15:3–5these things and enter into his glory? " 24:26 Lk 9:26,32; 21:27; 22:69; Ac 2:33; 7:55; 22:1127 Then beginning with Moses 24:27 Gn 3:15; 12:3; 22:18; Nm 21:9; 24:17 and all the Prophets, 24:27 2Sm 7:12–16; Is 7:14; 9:6; 52:13–53:12; Jr 23:5–6; Dn 7:13–14; Mc 5:2; Zch 9:9; 12:10 he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures. 24:27 Lk 16:16
28 They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther. 24:28 Mk 6:4829 But they urged him, "Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
30 It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke 24:30 Lk 9:16; 22:19 it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, 24:31 2Kg 6:17; Lk 24:16 and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. 24:31 Jn 20:19,2632 They said to each other, "Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures 24:32 Ac 17:3; 1Co 15:3–8 to us? " 33 That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven 24:33 Lk 24:9 and those with them gathered together, 34 who said, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! " 24:34 Lk 22:32; 1Co 15:4–535 Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. 24:35 Ac 2:42
The Reality of the Risen Jesus
36 As 24:36–44 Jn 20:19–20 they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, "Peace 24:36 Lk 2:14; 7:50; 8:48; 10:5; 19:38; Ac 10:36to you! "37 But they were startled and terrified 24:37 Lk 24:5; Ac 10:4; 24:25 and thought they were seeing a ghost. 24:37 Mt 14:2638 "Why are you troubled? " 24:38 Jn 14:1,27 he asked them. "And why do doubts arise in your hearts?39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! 24:39 Jn 20:25,27Touch me and see, 24:39 Mt 28:9; Ac 2:31; 17:18,31–32; 23:6–10; 24:15,21because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."40 Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat? 44 He told them, "These are my words 24:44 Lk 9:22,44; 17:25; 18:31–33; 22:37that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, 24:44 Ac 13:15; 28:23and the Psalms 24:44 Ps 2:6–9; 16:10; 22:1–18; 34:20; 41:9; 69:1–9,20–21,26; 110:1–7; 118:22–26must be fulfilled."45 Then he opened their minds 24:45 Lk 24:27,31 to understand 24:45 Lk 9:45; 18:34 the Scriptures. 46 He also said to them, "This is what is written: 24:46 Other mss add and thus it was necessary thatThe Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 24:46 Ps 16:10; Lk 9:22,44; 17:25; 18:32; Ac 8:26–40; 1Co 15:3–447 and repentance for 24:47 Many mss read repentance andforgiveness of sins 24:47 Hs 14:2; Lk 3:3; Ac 2:38; 5:31; 8:22will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, 24:47 Gn 12:3; Ps 22:27; Is 2:2; 49:6; Hs 2:23; Mal 1:11; Mt 28:19–20; Mk 16:15beginning at Jerusalem. 24:47–49 Ac 1:4–848 You are witnesses 24:48 Ac 4:20,33of these things.49 And look, I am sending you 24:49 Lit upon youwhat my Father promised. 24:49 Is 32:15; Jl 2:28–32; Jn 14:26; Ac 2:16–21; Eph 1:13As for you, stay in the city 24:49 Other mss add of Jerusalemuntil you are empowered 24:49 Lit clothed with power, 24:49 Ac 4:33; Rm 15:13from on high."
