Proverbs 13

1 A wise son responds to his father’s discipline,

but a mocker doesn’t listen to rebuke.

2 From the fruit of his mouth,

a person will enjoy good things,  * 13:2 Pr 12:14

but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.  * 13:2 Pr 1:10–12,31; 18:20–21; Is 32:6–8

3 The one who guards his mouth protects his life;  * 13:3 Pr 18:21; 21:23; Jms 3:2

the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin.  * 13:3 Pr 10:14; 12:13; 18:7

4 The slacker craves, yet has nothing,

but the diligent is fully satisfied.  * 13:4 Pr 10:4; 12:24,27; 19:15

5 The righteous hate lying,

but the wicked bring disgust and shame.

6 Righteousness guards people of integrity,  * 13:6 Lit guards integrity of way

but wickedness undermines the sinner.  * 13:6 Pr 10:29; 11:3

7 One person pretends to be rich but has nothing;  * 13:7 Pr 11:24; Lk 12:20–21; 1Tm 6:17–19; Rv 3:17–18

another pretends to be poor but has abundant wealth.  * 13:7 Lk 12:33; 2Co 6:10; Jms 2:5

8 Riches are a ransom for a person’s life,  * 13:8 Jb 2:4; Pr 10:15

but a poor person hears no threat.

9 The light of the righteous shines brightly,  * 13:9 Pr 4:18

but the lamp of the wicked is put out.  * 13:9 Jb 18:5–6; Pr 20:20; 24:20

10 Arrogance leads to nothing but strife,  * 13:10 Pr 17:19

but wisdom is gained by those who take advice.

11 Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle,  * 13:11 Pr 10:2; 20:21; 23:5

but whoever earns it through labor  * 13:11 Lit whoever gathers upon his hand will multiply it.  * 13:11 Pr 10:4; 21:5–6

12 Hope delayed makes the heart sick,

but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.  * 13:12 Pr 11:30; 15:4

13 The one who has contempt for instruction will pay the penalty,  * 13:13 Nm 15:31; 2Ch 36:16

but the one who respects a command will be rewarded.  * 13:13 Pr 3:1–2; 4:4; 6:23

14 A wise person’s instruction is a fountain of life,  * 13:14 Pr 10:11; 14:27

turning people away from the snares of death.  * 13:14 Ps 18:5; 116:3

15 Good sense wins favor,  * 13:15 Pr 3:4

but the way of the treacherous never changes.  * 13:15 LXX, Syr, Tg read treacherous will perish

16 Every sensible person acts knowledgeably,

but a fool displays his stupidity.  * 13:16 Pr 12:23; 15:2; Ec 10:3

17 A wicked envoy falls into trouble,

but a trustworthy courier brings healing.  * 13:17 Pr 25:13

18 Poverty and disgrace come to those

who ignore discipline,

but the one who accepts correction will be honored.  * 13:18 Pr 5:12–14; 12:1; 15:31–33

19 Desire fulfilled is sweet to the taste,

but to turn from evil is detestable to fools.  * 13:19 Pr 16:22; 29:27

20 The one who walks with the wise will become wise,

but a companion of fools will suffer harm.

21 Disaster pursues sinners,

but good rewards the righteous.  * 13:21 Ps 32:10; Pr 11:31; 13:13

22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his  * 13:22 Or inheritance: his  grandchildren,

but the sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.  * 13:22 Jb 27:13–17; Pr 28:8; Ec 2:26

23 The uncultivated field of the poor yields abundant food,

but without justice, it is swept away.

24 The one who will not use the rod hates his son,  * 13:24 Pr 19:18; 22:15; 23:13–14; 29:15,17

but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.  * 13:24 Dt 8:5; Pr 3:12; Heb 12:5–7

25 A righteous person eats until he is satisfied,

but the stomach of the wicked is empty.  * 13:25 Pr 10:3
