Proverbs 14

1 Every wise woman builds her house 14:1 Ru 4:11; Pr 9:1; 24:3; 31:10–27

but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands 14:1 Pr 11:11; 29:4

2 Whoever lives with integrity fears the  Lord 14:2 Pr 19:1; 28:6

but the one who is devious in his ways despises him 14:2 Pr 2:15

3 The proud speech of fool brings rod of discipline 14:3 Some emend to In the mouth of a fool is a rod for his back

but the lips of the wise protect them 14:3 Pr 12:6

4 Where there are no oxen, the feeding trough is empty 14:4 Or clean

but an abundant harvest comes through the strength of an ox.

5 An honest witness does not deceive,

but a dishonest witness utters lies 14:5 Ex 20:16; 23:1; Pr 6:19; 12:17; 14:25

6 A mocker seeks wisdom and doesn’t find it,

but knowledge comes easily to the perceptive.

7 Stay away from foolish person;

you will gain no knowledge from his speech 14:7 Pr 20:15

8 The sensible person’s wisdom is to consider his way,

but the stupidity of fools deceives them.

9 Fools mock at making reparation 14:9 Or at guilt offerings

but there is goodwill among the upright.

10 The heart knows its own bitterness,

and no outsider shares in its joy.

11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed,

but the tent of the upright will flourish 14:11 Pr 10:25; 11:28; 12:7; Mt 7:24–27

12 There is way that seems right to person 14:12 Pr 12:15; 16:25

but its end is the way to death 14:12 Pr 5:4; Rm 6:21

13 Even in laughter heart may be sad,

and joy may end in grief 14:13 Ec 2:1–2; Lk 6:25

14 The disloyal one will get what his conduct deserves,

and a good one, what his deeds deserve 14:14 Pr 1:31; 12:14; 18:20; 28:19

15 The inexperienced one believes anything 14:15 Eph 4:14; Jms 1:5–8

but the sensible one watches  14:15 Lit the prudent understands his steps.

16 A wise person is cautious and turns from evil 14:16 Jb 28:28; Ps 34:14; Pr 3:7; 22:3

but a fool is easily angered and is careless 14:16 Or and falls

17 A quick-tempered person acts foolishly,

and one who schemes is hated 14:17 Pr 12:2; 24:8

18 The inexperienced inherit foolishness,

but the sensible are crowned with knowledge.

19 The evil bow before those who are good,

and the wicked, at the gates of the righteous.

20 A poor person is hated even by his neighbor 14:20 Pr 19:7

but there are many who love the rich 14:20 Pr 19:4

21 The one who despises his neighbor sins 14:21 Pr 11:12

but whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy 14:21 Ps 41:1

22 Don’t those who plan evil go astray 14:22 Pr 6:14–15; 12:26

But those who plan good find loyalty and faithfulness 14:22 Pr 12:20

23 There is profit in all hard work,

but endless talk  14:23 Lit but word of lips leads only to poverty 14:23 Pr 21:5

24 The crown of the wise is their wealth,

but the foolishness of fools produces foolishness.

25 A truthful witness rescues lives,

but one who utters lies is deceitful 14:25 Pr 6:19; 12:17; 14:5

26 In the fear of the  Lord one has strong confidence

and his children have refuge 14:26 Pr 29:25

27 The fear of the  Lord is fountain of life,

turning people away from the snares of death 14:27 Pr 13:14; 16:22; 19:23

28 A large population is king’s splendor,

but a shortage of people is ruler’s devastation.

29 A patient person shows great understanding 14:29 Pr 16:32; 19:11; Ec 7:9; Jms 1:19

but a quick-tempered one promotes foolishness.

30 A tranquil heart is life to the body 14:30 Pr 3:8; 4:22; 16:24

but jealousy is rottenness to the bones 14:30 Pr 12:4; 27:4; Jms 3:16

31 The one who oppresses the poor person insults his Maker 14:31 Pr 17:5; 21:13; Mt 25:40; 1Jn 3:17

but one who is kind to the needy honors him 14:31 Pr 3:9; 14:21; 19:17; 22:2

32 The wicked one is thrown down by his own sin 14:32 Ps 17:15; 73:24; Pr 24:16; 2Co 1:9; 5:8; 2Tm 4:18

but the righteous one has refuge in his death 14:32 Pr 10:25

33 Wisdom resides in the heart of the discerning 14:33 Pr 15:14; 18:15; Ec 7:9

she is known  14:33 LXX reads unknown even among fools.

34 Righteousness exalts nation,

but sin is disgrace to any people 14:34 Pr 11:11

35 A king favors prudent servant 14:35 Pr 22:29; Mt 24:45–47; 25:21

but his anger falls on disgraceful one.
