2 Pedro 1

1 Simon Peter, bondman and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have received like precious faith with us through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 As his divine power has given to us all things which relate to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us by glory and virtue, 4 through which he has given to us the greatest and precious promises, that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5 But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge, 6 in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness, 7 in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love: 8 for these things existing and abounding in you make you to be neither idle nor unfruitful as regards the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ; 9 for he with whom these things are not present is blind, short-sighted, and has forgotten the purging of his former sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, use diligence to make your calling and election sure, for doing these things ye will never fall; 11 for thus shall the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you.

12 Wherefore I will be careful to put you always in mind of these things, although knowing them and established in the present truth. 13 But I account it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance, 14 knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle is speedily to take place, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has manifested to me; 15 but I will use diligence, that after my departure ye should have also, at any time, in your power to call to mind these things.

16 For we have not made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, following cleverly imagined fables, but having been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, such a voice being uttered to him by the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight; 18 and this voice we heard uttered from heaven, being with him on the holy mountain.

19 And we have the prophetic word made surer, to which ye do well taking heed (as to a lamp shining in an obscure place) until the day dawn and the morning star arise in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that the scope of no prophecy of scripture is had from its own particular interpretation, 21 for prophecy was not ever uttered by the will of man, but holy men of God spake under the power of the Holy Spirit.

Aan: de mensen die een even kostbaar geloof hebben ontvangen als wij, dankzij de rechtvaardigheid van onze God en redder Jezus Christus.

2 Ik wens jullie toe dat jullie een overvloed aan genade en vrede mogen ervaren doordat jullie God en onze Heer Jezus kennen.

3 Doordat wij God kennen, die ons heeft geroepen om deel te krijgen aan zijn hemelse pracht en zijn goedheid, heeft zijn goddelijke kracht ons alles geschonken wat we nodig hebben om in eerbied voor Hem te leven. 4 De kostbare zegeningen die Hij had beloofd, heeft Hij geschonken opdat jullie daardoor deel zouden krijgen aan de goddelijke natuur, en zouden ontkomen aan het verderf in de wereld dat uit slechte verlangens voortvloeit.

5 Daarom moeten jullie je uiterste best moeten doen om je geloof aan te vullen met deugdzaamheid, je deugdzaamheid met kennis, 6 je kennis met zelfbeheersing, je zelfbeheersing met volharding, je volharding met eerbied voor God, 7 je eerbied voor God met liefdebetoon aan je geloofsgenoten, en je liefdebetoon aan geloofsgenoten met liefdebetoon aan iedereen. 8 Wanneer jullie die zaken in groeiende mate bezitten, zal het kennen van onze Heer Jezus Christus voor jullie niet zonder resultaat of vrucht zijn. 9 Maar wie ze niet bezit, is blind en kortzichtig; hij is vergeten dat hij van zijn vroegere zonden is gereinigd. 10 Broeders en zusters, doe dus je uiterste best om je roeping en uitverkiezing waar te maken. Als jullie dat doen, zal je nooit struikelen, 11 maar staat je een hartelijk welkom te wachten in het eeuwig koninkrijk van onze Heer en redder Jezus Christus.

12 Hieraan wil ik jullie voortdurend herinneren, hoewel jullie het al weten. De waarheid die jullie is gebracht, is goed tot jullie doorgedrongen. 13 Toch denk ik dat het goed is om jullie geheugen te blijven opfrissen zolang ik nog in dit aardse lichaam verblijf. 14 Ik weet dat ik mijn aardse lichaam binnenkort zal verlaten, want onze Heer Jezus Christus heeft me dat duidelijk gemaakt. 15 En ik zal mijn uiterste best doen om ervoor te zorgen dat jullie je deze dingen ook na mijn heengaan voortdurend zullen herinneren. 16 Wij waren namelijk geen slim bedachte mythes aan het volgen toen wij jullie vertelden over de machtige komst van onze Heer Jezus Christus: wij zijn ooggetuigen van zijn majesteit. 17 Hij ontving eer en glorie van God de Vader toen de stem van de verheven Heer klonk: "Dit is mijn dierbare Zoon; Ik verheug Mij over Hem." 18 Die stem uit de hemel hebben wij zelf gehoord toen we met Hem op de heilige berg waren.

19 Daarom zijn wij extra zeker van de betrouwbaarheid van de woorden van de profeten, en jullie doen er goed aan daarop te letten, als op een lamp die licht geeft in een donkere ruimte – in jullie hart – totdat het dag wordt en de morgenster opgaat. 20 Jullie moeten bovenal weten dat geen enkele profetie in de Schriften is ontstaan uit menselijk inzicht. 21 Profetie is nooit voortgekomen uit menselijk initiatief: als mensen namens God spraken, gebeurde dat onder de leiding van de Heilige Geest.
