1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Nerijah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying,2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning thee, Baruch:3 Thou didst say, Woe unto me! for Jehovah hath added grief to my sorrow; I am weary with my sighing, and I find no rest.4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, what I have built do I overthrow, and what I have planted I pluck up, even this whole land.5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek {them} not; for behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou shalt go.

1 La parole que Jérémie, le prophète, adressa à Baruc, fils de Nérija, lorsqu'il écrivit dans un livre ces paroles, sous la dictée de Jérémie, la quatrième année de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda. Il dit:2 Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, sur toi, Baruc:3 Tu dis: Malheur à moi! car l'Eternel ajoute le chagrin à ma douleur; je m'épuise en soupirant, et je ne trouve point de repos.4 Dis-lui: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, ce que j'ai bâti, je le détruirai; ce que j'ai planté, je l'arracherai, savoir tout ce pays.5 Et toi, rechercherais-tu de grandes choses? Ne les recherche pas! Car voici, je vais faire venir le malheur sur toute chair, dit l'Eternel; et je te donnerai ta vie pour butin, dans tous les lieux où tu iras.
