1 And Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that GodGodHebrew: Elohim had done to Moses, and to Israel his people; that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back, 3 and her two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom — for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land, 4 — and the name of the other, Eliezer — For the GodGodHebrew: Elohim of my father has been my help, and has delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh. 5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came to Moses with his sons and his wife into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of GodGodHebrew: Elohim6 And he sent word to Moses: I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come to thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other after their welfare, and went into the tent. 8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake; all the trouble that had befallen them on the way, and how Jehovah had delivered them. 9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness that Jehovah had done to Israel; that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they acted haughtily he was above them. 12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for GodGodHebrew: Elohim and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of GodGodHebrew: Elohim
13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening. 14 And Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did with the people, and said, What is this thing which thou art doing with the people? why dost thou sit alone, and all the people are standing by thee from morning to evening? 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to enquire of GodGodHebrew: Elohim16 When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known to them the statutes of GodGodHebrew: Elohim and his laws. 17 And Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that thou art doing is not good. 18 Thou wilt be quite exhausted, both thou and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee: thou canst not perform it alone. 19 Hearken now to my voice: I will give thee counsel, and GodGodHebrew: Elohim shall be with thee. Be thou for the people with GodGodHebrew: Elohim and bring the matters before GodGodHebrew: Elohim20 and teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21 But do thou provide among all the people able men, such as fear GodGodHebrew: Elohim men of truth, hating covetousness; and place them over them, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens, 22 that they may judge the people at all times; and it shall be that they shall bring to thee every great matter, and that they shall judge every small matter, and they shall lighten the task on thee, and they shall bear it with thee. 23 If thou do this thing, and GodGodHebrew: Elohim command thee so, thou wilt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. 24 And Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens. 26 And they judged the people at all times: the hard matters they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged. 27 And Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he departed into his land.

2 Y tomó Jethro, suegro de Moisés, á Séphora la mujer de Moisés, 18.2 cp. 4.26.después que él la envió,
3 Y á sus dos hijos; 18.3 cp. 2.22.el uno se llamaba Gersóm, porque dijo: Peregrino he sido en tierra ajena;
4 Y el otro se llamaba 18.4 Dios de auxilio.Eliezer, porque dijo, El Dios de mi padre me ayudó, y me libró del cuchillo de Faraón.
5 Y Jethro, el suegro de Moisés, con sus hijos y su mujer, llegó á Moisés en el desierto, donde tenía el campo 18.5 cp. 3.1,12.junto al monte de Dios;
6 Y dijo á Moisés: Yo tu suegro Jethro vengo á ti, con tu mujer, y sus dos hijos con ella.
7 Y Moisés salió á recibir á su suegro, é inclinóse, 18.7 Gn. 29.13 y 33.4. 2 S. 19.39.y besólo: y preguntáronse el uno al otro cómo estaban, y vinieron á la tienda.
8 Y Moisés contó á su suegro todas las cosas que Jehova había hecho á Faraón y á los Egipcios por amor de Israel, y todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo los había librado Jehová.
9 Y alegróse Jethro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho á Israel, que lo había librado de mano de los Egipcios.
10 Y Jethro dijo: 18.10 Gn. 14.20. 2 S. 18.28.Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de mano de los Egipcios, y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo de la mano de los Egipcios.
11 Ahora conozco que Jehová es grande más que todos los dioses; 18.11 cp. 5.2,7.hasta en lo que 18.11 Lc. 1.51.se ensoberbecieron contra ellos.
12 Y tomó Jethro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios: y vino Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel á comer pan con el suegro de Moisés 18.12 cp. 24.11. Gn. 31.54. Dt. 12.7 y 14.26. 1 Cr. 29.22.delante de Dios.
13 Y aconteció que otro día se sentó Moisés á juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.
14 Y viendo el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía con el pueblo, dijo: ¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?
15 Y Moisés respondió á su suegro: Porque 18.15 Lv. 24.12. Nm. 15.34.el pueblo viene á mí para consultar á Dios:
16 Cuando tienen 18.16 cp. 24.14. Dt. 17.8. 1 Co. 6.1.negocios, vienen á mí; y yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, 18.16 Lv. 24.15. Nm. 15.35 y 27.6 y 36.6, etc.y declaro las ordenanzas de Dios y sus leyes.
17 Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: No haces bien:
18 Desfallecerás del todo, tú, y también este pueblo que esta contigo; porque el negocio es demasiado pesado para ti; 18.18 Nm. 11.14,17. Dt. 1.9,12.no podrás hacerlo tú solo.
19 Oye ahora mi voz; yo te aconsejaré, y Dios será contigo. 18.19 cp. 20.19. Dt. 5.5.Está tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y 18.19 Nm. 27.5.somete tú los negocios á Dios.
20 Y enseña á ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, y muéstrales 18.20 Sal. 143.8.el camino por donde anden, y lo que han de hacer.
21 Además inquiere tú de entre todo el pueblo 18.21 Dt. 1.15,16 y 16.18. 2 Cr. 19.5,10. Hch. 6.3.varones de virtud, temerosos de Dios, varones de verdad, 18.21 Dt. 16.19.que aborrezcan la avaricia; y constituirás á éstos sobre ellos caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta y sobre diez.
22 Los cuales juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; 18.22 Lv. 24.11. Nm. 15.33. Dt. 1.17 y 17.8.y será que todo negocio grave lo traerán á ti, y ellos juzgarán todo negocio pequeño: alivia así la carga de sobre ti, 18.22 Nm. 11.17.y llevarla han ellos contigo.
23 Si esto hicieres, y Dios te lo mandare, tú podrás persistir, y todo este pueblo se irá también 18.23 cp. 16.29. Gn. 18.33. 2 S. 19.39.en paz á su lugar.
24 Y oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, é hizo todo lo que dijo.
25 Y 18.25 Dt. 1.15.escogió Moisés varones de virtud de todo Israel, y púsolos por cabezas sobre el pueblo, caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta, y sobre diez.
26 Y juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo: el negocio árduo traíanlo á Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo negocio pequeño.
27 Y despidió Moisés á su suegro, 18.27 Nm. 10.29,30.y fuése á su tierra.
