1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Nerijah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying,2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning thee, Baruch:3 Thou didst say, Woe unto me! for Jehovah hath added grief to my sorrow; I am weary with my sighing, and I find no rest.4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, what I have built do I overthrow, and what I have planted I pluck up, even this whole land.5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek {them} not; for behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou shalt go.

1 A palavra que no quarto ano de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, o profeta Jeremias falou a Baruque, filho de Nerias, quando este escrevia num livro estas palavras da boca de Jeremias que disse:2 Assim diz Jeová, Deus de Israel, acerca de ti, ó Baruque:3 Disseste: Ai de mim agora; pois Jeová acrescentou tristeza à minha dor; estou cansado do meu gemer, e não acho descanso.4 Assim lhe dirás: Isto diz Jeová: Eis que eu estou demolindo o que edifiquei, e arrancando o que plantei, e isto em toda a terra.5 Buscas tu para ti mesmo coisas grandes? não as busques. Pois eis que eu estou trazendo o mal sobre toda a carne, diz Jeová; porém te darei a tua vida por despojo em todos os lugares para onde fores.
