39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaias said again: 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Isaias, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.

- KJV King James Version
39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
- NIV New International Version
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 "He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them."12:40 Isaiah 6:10
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
- ESV English Standard Version
39 Therefore they [ch. 5:44]could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
40 [Isa. 6:10]; See Matt. 13:14, 15"He has blinded their eyes
and See Mark 6:52hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
and I would heal them."
41 Isaiah said these things because Isa. 6:1he saw his glory and [ch. 5:46]spoke of him.
- NLT New Living Translation
39 But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said,
40 "The Lord has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts—
so that their eyes cannot see,
and their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me
and have me heal them."12:40 Isa 6:10.
41 Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah’s glory.

So that I should heal them."

39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:
40 He has blinded 12:40 Jn 8:59their eyes
and hardened their hearts, 12:40 Heb 3:8
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and turn, 12:40 Is 56:3,6; Mt 18:3; 23:15; Ac 15:3; 28:27; Rm 16:5; 1Tm 3:6
and I would heal them. 12:40 Is 6:10, 12:40 Is 6:10; 1Pt 2:24
41 Isaiah said these things because 12:41 Other mss read when he saw his glory 12:41 Mk 10:37; Jn 17:24 and spoke about him.
- MSG The Message
36-40 Jesus said all this, and then went into hiding. All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn’t get it, still wouldn’t trust him. This proved that the prophet Isaiah was right:
God, who believed what we preached?
Who recognized God’s arm, outstretched and ready to act?
First they wouldn’t believe, then they couldn’t—again, just as Isaiah said:
Their eyes are blinded,
their hearts are hardened,
So that they wouldn’t see with their eyes
and perceive with their hearts,
And turn to me, God,
so I could heal them.
41 Isaiah said these things after he got a glimpse of God’s overflowing glory that would pour through the Messiah.
