1 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and comfort, and consolation. 4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 6 But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? 7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war? 9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no kind is without signification. 11 If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me. 12 So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all: 19 howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brethren, be not children in mind: howbeit in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men. 21 In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe. 23 If therefore the whole church be assembled together, and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all; 25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed. 26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret: 28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29 And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern. 30 But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence. 31 For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted; 32 and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets; 33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace; as in all the churches of the saints. 34 Let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law. 35 And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone? 37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. 38 But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39 Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 But let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Sigam o amor e procurem com zelo os dons espirituais, principalmente o de profetizar. 2 Pois quem fala em línguas não fala para as pessoas, mas fala para Deus; ninguém o entende, pois, por meio do Espírito, fala mistérios. 3 Mas o que profetiza fala para as pessoas, edificando, exortando e consolando. 4 O que fala em línguas a si mesmo edifica, mas o que profetiza edifica a igreja. 5 Eu quero que vocês todos falem em línguas, mas muito mais que profetizem. Pois quem profetiza é superior ao que fala em línguas, a não ser que as interprete, para que a igreja receba edificação.

6 E, agora, irmãos, se eu for até aí falando em línguas, que proveito vocês terão, se eu não falar por meio de revelação, de conhecimento, de profecia ou de doutrina? 7 É assim com instrumentos inanimados, como a flauta ou a harpa, quando emitem sons. Se não emitirem sons bem distintos, como se poderá reconhecer o que se toca na flauta ou na harpa? 8 Pois também se a trombeta der som incerto, quem se preparará para a batalha? 9 Assim também vocês, se com a língua não disserem palavra compreensível, como se entenderá o que é dito? Porque vocês estarão como que falando ao vento. 10 Há, sem dúvida, muitos tipos de vozes no mundo, e nenhuma delas é sem sentido. 11 Mas, se eu não entender o significado da voz, serei estrangeiro para aquele que fala, e ele será estrangeiro para mim. 12 Assim, também vocês, visto que desejam dons espirituais, procurem progredir, para a edificação da igreja.

13 Por isso, quem fala em línguas, ore para que as possa interpretar. 14 Porque, se eu orar em línguas, o meu espírito, de fato, ora, mas a minha mente fica infrutífera. 15 Que farei, então? Vou orar com o espírito, mas também vou orar com a mente; vou cantar com o espírito, mas também vou cantar com a mente. 16 Se você louvar apenas em espírito, como o não instruído poderá dizer o "amém" depois da oração de agradecimento que você fez? Porque ele não entende o que você diz. 17 A sua oração de agradecimento pode ser muito boa, mas o outro não é edificado. 18 Dou graças a Deus, porque falo em línguas mais do que todos vocês. 19 Contudo, na igreja prefiro falar cinco palavras com o meu entendimento, para instruir os outros, do que falar dez mil palavras em línguas.

20 Irmãos, não sejam meninos no entendimento. Quanto à maldade, sim, sejam crianças; mas, quanto ao entendimento, sejam pessoas maduras. 21 Na lei está escrito:

"Falarei a este povo

por meio de homens

de outras línguas

e por meio de lábios

de outros povos,

e nem assim me ouvirão,

diz o Senhor."

22 Portanto, as línguas constituem um sinal não para os que creem, mas para os que não creem; a profecia, no entanto, não é para os que não creem, e sim para os que creem. 23 Assim, se toda a igreja se reunir no mesmo lugar e todos se puserem a falar em línguas, no caso de entrarem pessoas não instruídas ou não crentes, será que não vão dizer que vocês estão loucos? 24 Porém, se todos profetizarem, e entrar ali um não crente ou não instruído, ele será convencido por todos e julgado por todos. 25 Os segredos que ele tem no coração se tornarão manifestos, e, assim, prostrando-se com o rosto em terra, adorará a Deus, testemunhando que Deus está, de fato, no meio de vocês.

26 Que fazer, então, irmãos? Quando vocês se reúnem, um tem um salmo, outro tem um ensino, este traz uma revelação, aquele fala em línguas, e ainda outro faz a interpretação. Que tudo seja feito para edificação. 27 No caso de alguém falar em línguas, que não sejam mais do que dois ou, quando muito, três, e isto sucessivamente, e haja alguém que interprete. 28 Mas, não havendo quem interprete, fique calado na igreja, falando consigo mesmo e com Deus. 29 Tratando-se de profetas, falem apenas dois ou três, e os outros julguem. 30 Se, porém, vier uma revelação a alguém que esteja sentado, cale-se o primeiro. 31 Porque todos poderão profetizar, um após outro, para que todos aprendam e sejam consolados. 32 Os espíritos dos profetas estão sujeitos aos próprios profetas, 33 porque Deus não é Deus de confusão, e sim de paz.

Como em todas as igrejas dos santos, 34 que as mulheres se conservem caladas nas igrejas, porque não lhes é permitido falar; mas estejam submissas, como também a lei o determina. 35 Se, porém, querem aprender alguma coisa, perguntem em casa ao seu próprio marido; porque para a mulher é vergonhoso falar na igreja. 36 Por acaso a palavra de Deus se originou no meio de vocês? Ou será que ela veio exclusivamente para vocês?

37 Se alguém se considera profeta ou espiritual, reconheça que é mandamento do Senhor o que estou escrevendo para vocês. 38 E, se alguém o ignorar, será ignorado.

39 Portanto, meus irmãos, procurem com zelo o dom de profetizar e não proíbam que se fale em línguas. 40 Tudo, porém, seja feito com decência e ordem.
