1 In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behaviour of their wives; 2 beholding your chaste behaviour coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel; 4 but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror. 7 Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honour unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered. 8 Finally, be ye all likeminded, compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, humbleminded: 9 not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile: 11 And let him turn away from evil, and do good; Let him seek peace, and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears unto their supplication: But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil. 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous of that which is good? 14 But and if ye should suffer for righteousness’ sake, blessed are ye: and fear not their fear, neither be troubled; 15 but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: 16 having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ. 17 For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing. 18 Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit; 19 in which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, 20 which aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water: 21 which also after a true likeness doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; 22 who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

1 Igualmente vocês, esposas, estejam sujeitas, cada uma a seu próprio marido, para que, se ele ainda não obedece à palavra, seja ganho sem palavra alguma, por meio da conduta de sua esposa, 2 ao observar o comportamento honesto e cheio de temor que vocês têm. 3 Que a beleza de vocês não seja exterior, como tranças nos cabelos, joias de ouro e vestidos finos, 4 mas que ela esteja no ser interior, uma beleza permanente de um espírito manso e tranquilo, que é de grande valor diante de Deus. 5 Pois foi assim também que, no passado, costumavam se enfeitar as santas mulheres que esperavam em Deus, estando cada qual sujeita a seu próprio marido. 6 Foi o que fez Sara, que obedeceu a Abraão, chamando-o de "senhor", da qual vocês se tornaram filhas, praticando o bem e não temendo perturbação alguma.

7 Maridos, vocês, igualmente, vivam a vida comum do lar com discernimento, dando honra à esposa, por ser a parte mais frágil e por ser coerdeira da mesma graça da vida. Agindo assim, as orações de vocês não serão interrompidas.

8 Finalmente, tenham todos o mesmo modo de pensar, sejam compassivos, fraternalmente amigos, misericordiosos, humildes. 9 Não paguem mal com mal, nem ofensa com ofensa. Pelo contrário, respondam com palavras de bênção, pois para isto mesmo vocês foram chamados, a fim de receberem bênção por herança. 10 Pois:

"Aquele que quer amar a vida

e ter dias felizes

refreie a língua do mal

e evite que os seus lábios

falem palavras enganosas;

11 afaste-se do mal

e pratique o bem,

busque a paz e empenhe-se

por alcançá-la.

12 Porque os olhos do Senhor

repousam sobre os justos,

e os seus ouvidos

estão abertos às suas súplicas,

mas o rosto do Senhor

está contra aqueles

que praticam o mal."

13 Ora, quem há de maltratá-los, se vocês forem zelosos na prática do bem? 14 Mas, mesmo que venham a sofrer por causa da justiça, vocês são bem-aventurados. Não tenham medo das ameaças, nem fiquem angustiados; 15 pelo contrário, santifiquem a Cristo, como Senhor, no seu coração, estando sempre preparados para responder a todo aquele que pedir razão da esperança que vocês têm. 16 Mas façam isso com mansidão e temor, com boa consciência, de modo que, naquilo em que falam mal de vocês, fiquem envergonhados esses que difamam a boa conduta que vocês têm em Cristo. 17 Porque, se for da vontade de Deus, é melhor que vocês sofram por praticarem o bem do que praticando o mal. 18 Pois também Cristo padeceu, uma única vez, pelos pecados, o justo pelos injustos, para conduzir vocês a Deus; morto, sim, na carne, mas vivificado no espírito, 19 no qual também foi e pregou aos espíritos em prisão, 20 os quais, noutro tempo, foram desobedientes, quando Deus aguardava com paciência nos dias de Noé, enquanto se preparava a arca, na qual poucas pessoas, apenas oito, foram salvas através da água. 21 O batismo, que corresponde a isso, agora também salva vocês, não sendo a remoção das impurezas do corpo, mas o apelo por uma boa consciência para com Deus, por meio da ressurreição de Jesus Cristo, 22 que, depois de ir para o céu, está à direita de Deus, ficando-lhe subordinados anjos, potestades e poderes.
