1 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and rapine; the prey departeth not. 2 The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels; and pransing horses, and jumping chariots; 3 the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear; and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of carcases: and there is none end of the corpses; they stumble upon their corpses: 4 because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well favoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. 5 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face; and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. 6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock. 7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee? 8 Art thou better than No-amon, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about her; whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was of the sea? 9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers. 10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. 11 Thou also shalt be drunken, thou shalt be hid; thou also shalt seek a strong hold because of the enemy. 12 All thy fortresses shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. 13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women; the gates of thy land are set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire hath devoured thy bars. 14 Draw thee water for the siege, strengthen thy fortresses: go into the clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brickkiln. 15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall devour thee like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locust. 16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away. 17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. 18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy worthies are at rest: thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them. 19 There is no assuaging of thy hurt; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee clap the hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

1 Ai da cidade sanguinária,

toda cheia de mentiras e de roubo

e que não solta a sua presa!

2 Eis o estalo dos açoites,

o estrondo das rodas,

o galope dos cavalos

e os carros que vão saltando!

3 Os cavaleiros que esporeiam,

as espadas brilhantes,

as lanças reluzentes,

uma multidão de feridos,

massa de cadáveres,

mortos sem fim

— chegam a tropeçar

sobre os mortos.

4 Tudo isso por causa

da grande prostituição

da bela e encantadora prostituta,

da mestra de feitiçarias,

que seduzia as nações

com a sua prostituição

e os povos, com as suas feitiçarias.

5 "Eis que eu estou contra você",

diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

"Levantarei as abas de sua saia

sobre o seu rosto,

e mostrarei às nações a sua nudez,

e aos reinos, as suas vergonhas.

6 Vou jogar sujeira sobre você,

tratá-la com desprezo

e transformá-la em espetáculo.

7 Todos os que a virem

fugirão de você

e dirão: ‘Nínive está destruída!’

Quem terá compaixão dela?

De onde buscarei

quem a console?"

8 Será que você é melhor

do que Tebas,

que estava situada junto ao Nilo,

cercada de águas,

protegida pelo mar

e tendo as águas por muralha?

9 A Etiópia e o Egito

eram a sua força,

força sem limites;

Pute e Líbia eram seus aliados.

10 Todavia, ela foi levada ao exílio,

foi para o cativeiro.

Também os seus filhos

foram despedaçados

nas esquinas de todas as ruas.

Sobre os seus nobres

lançaram sortes,

e todos os seus grandes

foram presos com correntes.

11 Também você, Nínive,

será embriagada e se esconderá.

Também você procurará

um refúgio contra o inimigo.

12 Todas as suas fortalezas

são como figueiras

com figos prematuros:

é só sacudir a figueira,

que os figos caem na boca

de quem os há de comer.

13 Eis que os seus soldados

são como mulheres.

Os portões do seu país estão

completamente abertos

para os seus inimigos;

o fogo destruiu as trancas.

14 Tire água para o tempo do cerco,

reforce as suas fortalezas,

entre no lodo e pise o barro,

pegue as formas para fazer tijolos.

15 No entanto, você será

consumida pelo fogo

e exterminada pela espada

como folhas devoradas

pelos gafanhotos.

Multipliquem-se

como os gafanhotos!

Tornem-se tão numerosos como eles!

16 Os seus negociantes eram

mais numerosos

do que as estrelas do céu,

mas como gafanhotos

bateram asas e voaram.

17 Os seus príncipes eram

como gafanhotos,

e os seus chefes,

como gafanhotos grandes,

que pousam nos muros

em dias de frio;

quando o sol aparece,

voam embora,

e não se sabe para onde vão.

18 Os seus pastores dormem,

ó rei da Assíria;

os seus nobres cochilam.

O seu povo está espalhado

pelos montes,

e não há quem possa ajuntá-lo.

19 Não há remédio para o seu mal;

o seu ferimento é grave.

Todos os que ouvirem falar

do que aconteceu com você

baterão palmas.

Pois quem não foi vítima

da sua crueldade sem fim?
