Amos 1

1 The words of Amos, who was among the *ch. 7:14,15shepherds*1:1 Or sheep breeders of *2 Sam. 14:2Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel *See Hos. 1:1in the days of *2 Kgs. 15:1,13,30;2 Chr. 26:1Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of *ch. 7:10;2 Kgs. 14:23Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years*1:1 Or during two years before *Zech. 14:5;[Isa. 29:6]the earthquake.

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

2 And he said:

*See Joel 3:16"The Lord roars from Zion

and utters his voice from Jerusalem;

*[Ps. 65:12] the pastures of the shepherds mourn,

and the *ch. 9:3top of *See Josh. 19:26Carmel withers."

3 Thus says the Lord:

*ver. 9, 11, 13;ch. 2:1,4,6;Prov. 30:15,18,21,29"For three transgressions of *[Isa. 8:4] Damascus,

and for four, *[Isa. 8:4] I will not revoke the punishment,*1:3 Hebrew I will not turn it back; also verses 6, 9, 11, 13

because they have threshed *ver. 13;[2 Kgs. 10:33;Isa. 21:10]Gilead

with threshing sledges of iron.

4 *Jer. 49:27So I will send a fire upon the house of *2 Kgs. 13:24,25Hazael,

and it shall devour the strongholds of *2 Kgs. 13:24,25Ben-hadad.

5 I will *Jer. 51:30break the gate-bar of *[See ver. 3above] Damascus,

and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of *See Hos. 4:15Aven,*1:5 Or On

and him who holds the scepter from *2 Kgs. 19:12Beth-eden;

and the people of *ch. 9:7;[2 Kgs. 16:9] Syria shall go into exile to *ch. 9:7;2 Kgs. 16:9Kir,"

says the Lord.

6 Thus says the Lord:

*[See ver. 3above] "For three transgressions of *Jer. 47:1,5;Zeph. 2:4;Zech. 9:5Gaza,

and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,

because *2 Chr. 28:18;See Joel 3:4-6they carried into exile a whole people

to deliver them up to Edom.

7 So I will send a fire upon the wall of *[See ver. 6above]Gaza,

and it shall devour her strongholds.

8 I will cut off the inhabitants from *ch. 3:9;1 Sam. 5:1Ashdod,

and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;

I will turn my hand against Ekron,

and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,"

says the Lord God.

9 Thus says the Lord:

*[See ver. 3above] "For three transgressions of *See Joel 3:4Tyre,

and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,

because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,

and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.

10 So I will send a fire upon the wall of *[See ver. 9above]Tyre,

and it shall devour her strongholds."

11 Thus says the Lord:

*[See ver. 3above] "For three transgressions of *[2 Chr. 28:17] Edom,

and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,

*[2 Chr. 28:17] because he pursued his brother with the sword

*Ps. 137:7;[Joel 3:19;Mal. 1:4] and cast off all pity,

*Ezek. 35:5and his anger tore perpetually,

*Ezek. 35:5and he kept his wrath forever.

12 So I will send a fire upon *Obad. 9;See 1 Chr. 1:45Teman,

and it shall devour the strongholds of *Isa. 63:1;See 1 Chr. 1:44Bozrah."

13 Thus says the Lord:

*[See ver. 3above] "For three transgressions of the *Jer. 49:1,2;Zeph. 2:8,9Ammonites,

and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,

because *See Hos. 13:16they have ripped open pregnant women in *ver. 3Gilead,

that they might enlarge their border.

14 So I will kindle a fire in the wall of *2 Sam. 11:1;12:26;See Ezek. 21:20Rabbah,

*[Ezek. 21:28,29]and it shall devour her strongholds,

with shouting on the day of battle,

*[Ezek. 21:28,29]with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;

15 and *Jer. 49:3their king shall go into exile,

he and his princes*1:15 Or officials together,"

says the Lord.
