1 And Hannah prayed, and said, Mine heart reioyceth in the Lord, mine horne is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is enlarged ouer mine enemies, because I reioyce in thy saluation. 2 There is none holy as the Lord: yea, there is none besides thee, and there is no god like our God. 3 Speake no more presumptuously: let not arrogancie come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him enterprises are established. 4 The bow and the mightie men are broken, and the weake haue girded themselues with strength. 5 They that were full, are hired foorth for bread, and the hungrie are no more hired, so that the barren hath borne seuen: and shee that had many children, is feeble. 6 The Lord killeth and maketh aliue: bringeth downe to the graue and raiseth vp. 7 The Lord maketh poore and maketh rich: bringeth lowe, and exalteth. 8 He raiseth vp ye poore out of the dust, and lifteth vp the begger from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherite the seate of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lordes, and he hath set the world vpon them. 9 Hee will keepe the feete of his Saintes, and the wicked shall keepe silence in darkenes: for in his owne might shall no man be strong. 10 The Lordes aduersaries shall be destroyed, and out of heauen shall he thunder vpon them: the Lord shall iudge the endes of the worlde, and shall giue power vnto his King, and exalt the horne of his Anoynted. 11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house, and the childe did minister vnto the Lord before Eli the Priest. 12 Now the sonnes of Eli were wicked men, and knewe not the Lord. 13 For the Priestes custome towarde the people was this: when any man offered sacrifice, the Priestes boy came, while the flesh was seething, and a fleshhooke with three teeth, in his hand, 14 And thrust it into the kettle, or into the caldron, or into the panne, or into the potte: all that the fleshhooke brought vp, the Priest tooke for himselfe: thus they did vnto all the Israelites, that came thither to Shiloh. 15 Yea, before they burnt the fat, the priests boy came and saide to the man that offered, Giue me flesh to rost for the priest: for he wil not haue sodden flesh of thee, but rawe. 16 And if any man saide vnto him, Let them burne the fatte according to the custome, then take as much as thine heart desireth: then hee would answere, No, but thou shalt giue it nowe: and if thou wilt not, I will take it by force. 17 Therefore the sinne of the yong men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord. 18 Now Samuel being a yong childe ministred before the Lord, girded with a linen Ephod. 19 And his mother made him a litle coat, and brought it to him from yeere to yeere, when she came vp with her husband, to offer the yerely sacrifice. 20 And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The Lord giue thee seede of this woman, for the petition that she asked of the Lord: and they departed vnto their place. 21 And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceiued, and bare three sonnes, and two daughters. And the childe Samuel grewe before the Lord. 22 So Eli was very olde, and heard all that his sonnes did vnto all Israel, and howe they laye with the women that assembled at the doore of the tabernacle of the Congregation. 23 And hee saide vnto them, Why doe ye such things? for of all this people I heare euill reportes of you. 24 Do no more, my sonnes, for it is no good report that I heare, which is, that ye make the Lords people to trespasse. 25 If one man sinne against another, the Iudge shall iudge it: but if a man sinne against the Lord, who will pleade for him? Notwithstanding they obeyed not the voyce of their father, because the Lord would slay them. 26 (Nowe the childe Samuel profited and grewe, and was in fauour both with the Lord and also with men) 27 And there came a man of God vnto Eli, and said vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did not I plainely appeare vnto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaohs house? 28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my Priest, to offer vpon mine altar, and to burne incense, and to weare an Ephod before me, and I gaue vnto the house of thy father all the offrings made by fire of the children of Israel. 29 Wherefore haue you kicked against my sacrifice and mine offering, which I commanded in my Tabernacle, and honourest thy children aboue mee, to make your selues fatte of the first fruites of all the offerings of Israel my people? 30 Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I saide, that thine house and the house of thy father should walke before mee for euer: but nowe the Lord saith, It shall not be so: for them that honour me, I will honour, and they that despise me, shall be despised. 31 Beholde, the dayes come, that I will cut off thine arme, and the arme of thy fathers house, that there shall not be an olde man in thine house. 32 And thou shalt see thine enemie in the habitation of the Lord in all thinges wherewith God shall blesse Israel, and there shall not be an olde man in thine house for euer. 33 Neuerthelesse, I will not destroy euery one of thine from mine altar, to make thine eyes to faile, and to make thine heart sorowfull: and all ye multitude of thine house shall die when they be men. 34 And this shalbe a signe vnto thee, that shall come vpon thy two sonnes Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both. 35 And I will stirre me vp a faithfull Priest, that shall do according to mine heart and according to my minde: and I wil build him a sure house, and he shall walke before mine Anointed for euer. 36 And all that are left in thine house, shall come and bowe downe to him for a piece of siluer and a morsell of bread, and shall say, Appoint me, I pray thee, to one of the priestes offices, that I may eate a morsell of bread.

1 Então Ana orou e disse: Alegra-se o meu coração em Jeová. Exaltado é o meu poder em Jeová. A minha boca dilata-se sobre os meus inimigos, Porque eu me regozijo na tua salvação.2 Ninguém há santo como Jeová; Pois não há outro fora de ti, Nem há outra rocha como o nosso Deus.3 Não continueis a falar tão orgulhosamente, Não saiam da vossa boca palavras arrogantes, Porque Jeová é Deus que tudo sabe, E por ele são pesadas as ações.4 O arco dos fortes se quebra, E os fracos são cingidos de força.5 Os fartos assalariam-se por pão, E os famintos deixam de ter fome. Até a estéril deu à luz sete filhos, E a que teve muitos filhos perde as forças.6 Jeová é o que tira a vida, e a dá; Faz descer ao Cheol, e faz subir.7 Jeová é o que empobrece, e dá riquezas; Ele abate, e também eleva.8 Levanta do pó ao pobre, Do monturo eleva ao necessitado, Para os fazer assentar entre os príncipes, E para lhes dar por herança um trono de glória; Pois de Jeová são as colunas da terra, E sobre elas tem posto o mundo.9 Ele guardará os pés dos seus santos, Os ímpios, porém, ficarão mudos nas trevas, Por que pela força não prevalecerá o homem.10 Jeová despedaçará os seus inimigos, Contra eles trovejará nos céus. Jeová julgará as extremidades da terra; Dará força ao seu rei, E exaltará o poder do seu ungido.11 Então se retirou Elcana para sua casa em Ramá. O menino, porém, ficou servindo a Jeová na presença do sacerdote Eli.12 Ora os filhos de Eli eram filhos de Belial; não conheciam a Jeová.13 Este era o costume dos sacerdotes para com o povo: sempre que alguém oferecia um sacrifício, vinha o servo do sacerdote, quando se cozia a carne, tendo na mão o seu garfo de três dentes,14 e metia-o na panela, ou no tacho, ou no calderão, ou na marmita. Tudo o que o garfo trazia para cima, tomava-o o sacerdote para si. Assim faziam em Silo a todos os israelitas que lá chegavam.15 Ainda mais, antes que queimassem a gordura, vinha o servo do sacerdote e dizia ao homem que estava oferecendo o sacrifício: Dá carne de assar para o sacerdote; porque ele não receberá de ti carne cozida, mas crua.16 Se lhe respondia o ofertante: Sem dúvida logo há de ser queimada a gordura, então tomarás quanto quiseres; replicava-lhe o servo: Não, porém hás de dar-ma agora; se não, tomá-la-ei à força.17 Era muito grande o pecado destes moços diante de Jeová, pois o povo veio a desprezar a oferta de Jeová.18 Samuel, porém, ministrava diante de Jeová, vestido de um efode de linho.19 Sua mãe fazia-lhe uma pequena túnica, e de ano em ano lha trazia, quando subia em companhia de seu marido a oferecer o sacrifício anual.20 Eli abençoou a Elcana e a sua mulher, e disse: Jeová te dê semente desta mulher em lugar da que foi pedida a Jeová. Então voltaram para sua casa.21 Visitou Jeová a Ana, e ela concebeu, e deu à luz três filhos e duas filhas. Entretanto o menino Samuel crescia diante de Jeová.22 Ora Eli era muito velho, mas ouvia tudo o que faziam seus filhos a todo o Israel, e como se deitavam com as mulheres que ministravam à porta da tenda da revelação.23 Disse-lhes: Por que fazeis tais coisas? de todo este povo eu ouço falar dos vossos maus atos.24 Não, filhos meus; pois não é boa a fama que eu ouço. Estais fazendo transgredir o povo de Jeová.25 Se o homem pecar contra outro, Deus o julgará; mas, se um homem pecar contra Jeová, quem intercederá por ele? Todavia não ouviram a voz de seu pai, porque Jeová os queria matar.26 Mas o menino Samuel ia crescendo em estatura e no favor de Jeová bem como dos homens.27 Veio um homem de Deus a Eli, e disse-lhe: Assim diz Jeová: Não me revelei à casa de teu pai, quando eles estavam no Egito sujeitos à casa de Faraó?28 Eu o escolhi dentre todas as tribos de Israel para ser o meu sacerdote, para subir ao meu altar, para queimar incenso e para trazer um efode diante de mim; e dei à casa de teu pai todas as ofertas queimadas dos filhos de Israel.29 Por que pisastes aos pés os meus sacrifícios e as minhas ofertas que ordenei que se fizessem na minha habitação, e por que honras a teus filhos mais do que a mim, engordando-vos das melhores de todas as ofertas do meu povo de Israel?30 Portanto diz Jeová, Deus de Israel: Eu tinha dito que a tua casa e a casa de teu pai andariam para sempre diante de mim, mas agora diz Jeová: Longe de mim tal coisa; porque honrarei aos que me honram, e os que me desprezam serão tidos em pouca conta.31 Eis que vêm dias em que cortarei o teu braço, e o braço da casa de teu pai, de sorte que não haja ancião em tua casa.32 Em todo o bem que Deus fará a Israel verás o aperto na minha habitação; e nunca haverá um ancião em tua casa.33 O homem da tua linhagem a quem eu não cortar do meu altar, será poupado para que os teus olhos se consumam, e a tua alma se entristeça; todos os descendentes da tua casa morrerão na flor da idade.34 Será para ti por sinal o que sobrevirá a teus dois filhos, a Hofni e a Finéias: no mesmo dia morrerão ambos.35 Eu suscitarei para mim um sacerdote fiel, que fará segundo tudo o que está no meu coração e na minha mente; edificar-lhe-ei uma casa duradoura, e ele andará sempre diante do meu ungido.36 Todo aquele que restar em tua casa virá e se prostrará diante dele por uma moeda de prata e por um pão e dirá: Rogo-te que me admitas a um dos cargos sacerdotais, para que eu coma um bocado de pão.
