1 Cominciamo noi di nuovo a raccomandar noi stessi? O abbiam noi bisogno, come alcuni, di lettere di raccomandazione presso di voi o da voi?

2 Siete voi la nostra lettera, scritta nei nostri cuori, conosciuta e letta da tutti gli uomini;

3 essendo manifesto che voi siete una lettera di Cristo, scritta mediante il nostro ministerio, scritta non con inchiostro, ma con lo Spirito dell’Iddio vivente; non su tavole di pietra, ma su tavole che son cuori di carne.

4 E una tal confidanza noi l’abbiamo per mezzo di Cristo presso Dio.

5 Non già che siam di per noi stessi capaci di pensare alcun che, come venendo da noi;

6 ma la nostra capacità viene da Dio, che ci ha anche resi capaci d’esser ministri d’un nuovo patto, non di lettera, ma di spirito; perché la lettera uccide, ma lo spirito vivifica.

7 Ora se il ministerio della morte scolpito in lettere su pietre fu circondato di gloria, talché i figliuoli d’Israele non poteano fissar lo sguardo nel volto di Mosè a motivo della gloria, che pur svaniva, del volto i lui,

8 non sarà il ministerio dello Spirito circondato di molto maggior gloria?

9 Se, infatti, il ministerio della condanna fu con gloria, molto più abbonda in gloria il ministerio della giustizia.

10 Anzi, quel che nel primo fu reso glorioso, non fu reso veramente glorioso, quando lo si confronti colla gloria di tanto superiore del secondo;

11 perché, se ciò che aveva da sparire fu circondato di gloria, molto più ha da esser glorioso ciò che ha da durare.

12 Avendo dunque una tale speranza, noi usiamo grande franchezza,

13 e non facciamo come Mosè, che si metteva un velo sulla faccia, perché i figliuoli d’Israele non fissassero lo sguardo nella fine di ciò che doveva sparire.

14 Ma le loro menti furon rese ottuse; infatti, sino al dì d’oggi, quando fanno la lettura dell’antico patto, lo stesso velo rimane, senz’essere rimosso, perché è in Cristo ch’esso è abolito.

15 Ma fino ad oggi, quando si legge Mosè, un velo rimane steso sul cuor loro;

16 quando però si saranno convertiti al Signore, il velo sarà rimosso.

17 Ora, il Signore è lo Spirito; e dov’è lo Spirito del Signore, quivi è libertà.

18 E noi tutti contemplando a viso scoperto, come in uno specchio, la gloria del Signore, siamo trasformati nell’istessa immagine di lui, di gloria in gloria, secondo che opera il Signore, che è Spirito.

1 Are we beginning again to commend ourselves? or need we, as do some, epistles of commendation to you or from you? 2 Ye are our epistle, written in our hearts, known and read of all men; 3 being made manifest that ye are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in tables that are hearts of flesh. 4 And such confidence have we through Christ to God-ward: 5 not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God; 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 7 But if the ministration of death, written, and engraven on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look stedfastly upon the face of Moses for the glory of his face; which glory was passing away: 8 how shall not rather the ministration of the spirit be with glory? 9 For if the ministration of condemnation hath glory, much rather doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. 10 For verily that which hath been made glorious hath not been made glorious in this respect, by reason of the glory that surpasseth. 11 For if that which passeth away was with glory, much more that which remaineth is in glory.

12 Having therefore such a hope, we use great boldness of speech, 13 and are not as Moses, who put a veil upon his face, that the children of Israel should not look stedfastly on the end of that which was passing away: 14 but their minds were hardened: for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remaineth, it not being revealed to them that it is done away in Christ. 15 But unto this day, whensoever Moses is read, a veil lieth upon their heart. 16 But whensoever it shall turn to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.
