1 Dopo queste cose, i figliuoli di Moab e i figliuoli di Ammon, e con loro de’ Maoniti, mossero contro iosafat per fargli guerra.

2 E vennero dei messi a informare Giosafat, dicendo: "Una gran moltitudine s’avanza contro di te dall’altra parte del mare, dalla Siria, ed è giunta a Hatsatson-Thamar," che è En-Ghedi.

3 E Giosafat ebbe paura, si dispose a cercare l’Eterno, e bandì un digiuno per tutto Giuda.

4 Giuda si radunò per implorare aiuto dall’Eterno, e da tutte quante le città di Giuda venivan gli abitanti a cercare l’Eterno.

5 E Giosafat, stando in piè in mezzo alla raunanza di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa dell’Eterno, davanti al cortile nuovo, disse:

6 "O Eterno, Dio de’ nostri padri, non sei tu l’Iddio dei cieli? e non sei tu che signoreggi su tutti i regni delle nazioni? e non hai tu nelle tue mani la forza e la potenza, in guisa che nessuno ti può resistere?

7 Non sei tu quegli, o Dio nostro, che cacciasti gli abitanti di questo paese d’innanzi al tuo popolo d’Israele, e lo desti per sempre alla progenie d’Abrahamo, il quale ti amò?

8 E quelli l’hanno abitato e v’hanno edificato un santuario per il tuo nome, dicendo:

9 Quando c’incolga qualche calamità, spada, giudizio, peste o carestia, noi ci presenteremo dinanzi a questa casa e dinanzi a te, poiché il tuo nome è in questa casa; e a te grideremo nella nostra tribolazione, e tu ci udrai e ci salverai.

10 Ed ora ecco che i figliuoli d’Ammon e di Moab e quei del monte di Seir, nelle terre dei quali non permettesti ad Israele d’entrare quando veniva dal paese d’Egitto, ed egli li lasciò da parte e non li distrusse,

11 eccoli che ora ci ricompensano, venendo a cacciarci dalla eredità di cui ci hai dato il possesso.

12 O Dio nostro, non farai tu giudizio di costoro? Poiché noi siamo senza forza, di fronte a questa gran moltitudine che s’avanza contro di noi; e non sappiamo che fare, ma gli occhi nostri sono su te!"

13 E tutto Giuda, perfino i bambini, le mogli, i figliuoli, stavano in piè davanti all’Eterno.

14 Allora lo spirito dell’Eterno investì in mezzo alla raunanza Jahaziel, figliuolo di Zaccaria, figliuolo di enaia, figliuolo di Jeiel, figliuolo di Mattania, il Levita, di tra i figliuoli d’Asaf.

15 E Jahaziel disse: "Porgete orecchio, voi tutti di Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, o re Giosafat! Così vi dice l’Eterno: Non temete e non vi sgomentate a motivo di questa gran moltitudine; poiché questa non è battaglia vostra, ma di Dio.

16 Domani, scendete contro di loro; eccoli che vengon su per la salita di Tsits, e voi li troverete all’estremità della valle, dirimpetto al deserto di Jeruel.

17 Questa battaglia non l’avete a combatter voi: presentatevi, tenetevi fermi, e vedrete la liberazione che l’Eterno vi darà. O Giuda, o Gerusalemme, non temete e non vi sgomentate; domani, uscite contro di loro, e l’Eterno sarà con voi".

18 Allora Giosafat chinò la faccia a terra, e tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostrarono dinanzi all’Eterno e l’adorarono.

19 E i Leviti di tra i figliuoli dei Kehathiti e di tra i figliuoli dei Korahiti si levarono per lodare ad altissima voce l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele.

20 La mattina seguente si levarono di buon’ora, e si misero in cammino verso il deserto di Tekoa; e come si mettevano in cammino, Giosafat, stando in piedi, disse: "Ascoltatemi, o Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme! Credete nell’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio vostro, e sarete al sicuro; credete ai suoi profeti, e trionferete!"

21 E dopo aver tenuto consiglio col popolo, stabilì dei cantori che, vestiti in santa magnificenza, cantassero le lodi dell’Eterno, e camminando alla testa dell’esercito, dicessero: "Celebrate l’Eterno, perché la sua benignità dura in perpetuo!"

22 E com’essi cominciavano i canti di gioia e di lode, l’Eterno tese un’imboscata contro i figliuoli di mmon e di Moab e contro quelli del monte Seir ch’eran venuti contro Giuda; e rimasero sconfitti.

23 I figliuoli di Ammon e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte di Seir per votarli allo sterminio e distruggerli; e quand’ebbero annientati gli abitanti di Seir, si diedero a distruggersi a vicenda.

24 E quando que’ di Giuda furon giunti sull’altura donde si scorge il deserto, volsero lo sguardo verso la moltitudine, ed ecco i cadaveri che giacevano a terra; nessuno era scampato.

25 Allora Giosafat e la sua gente andarono a far bottino delle loro spoglie; e fra i cadaveri trovarono abbondanza di ricchezze, di vesti e di oggetti preziosi; e se ne appropriarono più che ne potessero portare; tre giorni misero a portar via il bottino, tant’era copioso.

26 Il quarto giorno si radunarono nella Valle di Benedizione, dove benedissero l’Eterno; per questo, quel luogo è stato chiamato Valle di Benedizione fino al dì d’oggi.

27 Tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, con a capo Giosafat, partirono con gioia per tornare a erusalemme, perché l’Eterno li avea ricolmi d’allegrezza, liberandoli dai loro nemici.

28 Ed entrarono in Gerusalemme e nella casa dell’Eterno al suono de’ saltèri, delle cetre e delle trombe.

29 E il terrore di Dio s’impadronì di tutti i regni degli altri paesi, quando udirono che l’Eterno avea combattuto contro i nemici d’Israele.

30 E il regno di Giosafat ebbe requie; il suo Dio gli diede pace d’ogni intorno.

31 Così Giosafat regnò sopra Giuda. Avea trentacinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni a Gerusalemme; e il nome di sua madre era Azuba, figliuola di Scilhi.

32 Egli camminò per le vie di Asa suo padre, e non se ne allontanò, facendo quel ch’è giusto agli occhi dell’Eterno.

33 Nondimeno gli alti luoghi non scomparvero, perché il popolo non aveva ancora il cuore fermamente unito all’Iddio dei suoi padri.

34 Or il rimanente delle azioni di Giosafat, le prime e le ultime, si trovano scritte nella Storia di Jehu, figliuolo di Hanani, inserta nel libro dei re d’Israele.

35 Dopo questo, Giosafat, re di Giuda, si associò col re d’Israele Achazia, che aveva una condotta empia;

36 e se lo associò, per costruire delle navi che andassero a Tarsis; e le costruirono ad Etsion-Gheber.

37 Allora Eliezer, figliuolo di Dodava da Maresha, profetizzò contro Giosafat, dicendo: "Perché ti sei associato con Achazia, l’Eterno ha disperse le opere tue". E le navi furono infrante, e non poterono fare il viaggio di Tarsis.

1 And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea from Syria; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar (the same is En-gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek unto Jehovah; and he proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to seek help of Jehovah: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek Jehovah.

5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, before the new court; 6 and he said, O Jehovah, the God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and art not thou ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? and in thy hand is power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. 7 Didst not thou, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? 8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, 9 If evil come upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee (for thy name is in this house), and cry unto thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save. 10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not; 11 behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. 12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13 And all Judah stood before Jehovah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of Jehovah in the midst of the assembly; 15 and he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat: Thus saith Jehovah unto you, Fear not ye, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 To-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of Jehovah with you, O Judah and Jerusalem; fear not, nor be dismayed: to-morrow go out against them; for Jehovah is with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Jehovah, worshipping Jehovah. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Jehovah, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice.

20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem: believe in Jehovah your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed them that should sing unto Jehovah, and give praise in holy array, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks unto Jehovah; for his lovingkindness endureth for ever. 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, Jehovah set liers-in-wait against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, that were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24 And when Judah came to the watch-tower of the wilderness, they looked upon the multitude; and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none that escaped. 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Jehovah: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah unto this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Jehovah had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of Jehovah. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Jehovah fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his God gave him rest round about.

31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah. 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts unto the God of their fathers. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel.

35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel; the same did very wickedly: 36 and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, Jehovah hath destroyed thy works. And the ships were broken, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
