1 Così ha detto l’Eterno: Va’, compra una brocca di terra da un vasaio, e prendi teco alcuni degli anziani del popolo e degli anziani de’ sacerdoti;

2 récati nella valle del figliuolo d’Hinnom ch’è all’ingresso della porta dei Vasai, e quivi proclama le parole che io ti dirò.

3 Dirai così: Ascoltate la parola dell’Eterno, o re di Giuda, e abitanti di Gerusalemme! Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco io fo venire sopra questo luogo una calamità, che farà intronar gli orecchi di chi n’udrà parlare;

4 poiché m’hanno abbandonato, hanno profanato questo luogo, e vi hanno offerto profumi ad altri dèi, che né essi, né i loro padri, né i re di Giuda hanno conosciuti, e hanno riempito questo luogo di sangue d’innocenti;

5 hanno edificato degli alti luoghi a Baal, per bruciare nel fuoco i loro figliuoli in olocausto a Baal; cosa che io non avevo comandata, della quale non avevo parlato mai, e che non m’era mai venuta in cuore.

6 Perciò, ecco, i giorni vengono, dice l’Eterno, che questo luogo non sarà più chiamato "Tofet," né "la valle del figliuolo d’Hinnom," ma "la valle del Massacro".

7 Ed io frustrerò i disegni di Giuda e di Gerusalemme in questo luogo, e farò sì che costoro cadano per la spada dinanzi ai loro nemici, e per man di coloro che cercano la loro vita; e darò i loro cadaveri in pasto agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie della terra.

8 E farò di questa città una desolazione, un oggetto di scherno; chiunque passerà presso di lei rimarrà stupito, e si metterà a fischiare per tutte le sue piaghe.

9 E farò loro mangiare la carne de’ loro figliuoli e la carne delle loro figliuole, e mangeranno la carne gli uni degli altri, durante l’assedio e la distretta in cui li stringeranno i loro nemici e quelli che cercano la loro vita.

10 Poi tu spezzerai la brocca in presenza di quegli uomini che saranno andati teco, e dirai loro:

11 Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: Così spezzerò questo popolo e questa città, come si spezza un vaso di vasaio, che non si può più accomodare; e si seppelliranno i morti a Tofet, per mancanza di luogo per seppellire.

12 Così, dice l’Eterno, farò a questo luogo ed ai suoi abitanti, rendendo questa città simile a Tofet.

13 E le case di Gerusalemme, e le case dei re di Giuda, saranno come il luogo di Tofet, immonde; tutte le case, cioè, sopra i cui tetti essi hanno offerto profumi a tutto l’esercito del cielo, e han fatto libazioni ad altri dèi.

14 E Geremia tornò da Tofet, dove l’Eterno l’avea mandato a profetare; si fermò nel cortile della casa dell’Eterno, e disse a tutto il popolo:

15 "Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io fo venire sopra questa città e sopra tutte le città che da lei dipendono tutte le calamità che ho annunziate contro di lei, perché hanno indurato la loro cervice, per non dare ascolto alle mie parole".

1 Thus said Jehovah, Go, and buy a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests; 2 and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee; 3 and say, Hear ye the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, that they knew not, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal; which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: 6 therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter. 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies will I give to be food for the birds of the heavens, and for the beasts of the earth. 8 And I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the distress, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their life, shall distress them.

10 Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee, 11 and shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury. 12 Thus will I do unto this place, saith Jehovah, and to the inhabitants thereof, even making this city as Topheth: 13 and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods.

14 Then came Jeremiah from Topheth, whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Jehovah’s house, and said to all the people: 15 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.
