1 Una buona reputazione val meglio dell’olio odorifero; e il giorno della morte, meglio del giorno della nascita.

2 E’ meglio andare in una casa di duolo, che andare in una casa di convito; poiché là è la fine d’ogni uomo, e colui che vive vi porrà mente.

3 La tristezza val meglio del riso; poiché quando il viso è mesto, il cuore diventa migliore.

4 Il cuore del savio è nella casa del duolo; ma il cuore degli stolti è nella casa della gioia.

5 Meglio vale udire la riprensione del savio, che udire la canzone degli stolti.

6 Poiché qual è lo scoppiettio de’ pruni sotto una pentola, tal è il riso dello stolto. Anche questo è vanità.

7 Certo, l’oppressione rende insensato il savio, e il dono fa perdere il senno.

8 Meglio vale la fine d’una cosa, che il suo principio; e lo spirito paziente val meglio dello spirito altero.

9 Non t’affrettare a irritarti nello spirito tuo, perché l’irritazione riposa in seno agli stolti.

10 Non dire: "Come mai i giorni di prima eran migliori di questi?" poiché non è per sapienza che tu chiederesti questo.

11 La sapienza è buona quanto un’eredità, e anche di più, per quelli che vedono il sole.

12 Poiché la sapienza offre un riparo, come l’offre il danaro; ma l’eccellenza della scienza sta in questo, che la sapienza fa vivere quelli che la possiedono.

13 Considera l’opera di Dio; chi potrà raddrizzare ciò che egli ha ricurvo?

14 Nel giorno della prosperità godi del bene, e nel giorno dell’avversità rifletti. Dio ha fatto l’uno come ’altro, affinché l’uomo non scopra nulla di ciò che sarà dopo di lui.

15 Io ho veduto tutto questo nei giorni della mia vanità. V’è tal giusto che perisce per la sua giustizia, e v’è tal empio che prolunga la sua vita con la sua malvagità.

16 Non esser troppo giusto, e non ti far savio oltremisura; perché ti distruggeresti?

17 Non esser troppo empio, né essere stolto; perché morresti tu prima del tempo?

18 E’ bene che tu t’attenga fermamente a questo, e che tu non ritragga la mano da quello; poiché chi teme ddio evita tutte queste cose.

19 La sapienza dà al savio più forza che non facciano dieci capi in una città.

20 Certo, non v’è sulla terra alcun uomo giusto che faccia il bene e non pecchi mai.

21 Non porre dunque mente a tutte le parole che si dicono, per non sentirti maledire dal tuo servo;

22 poiché il tuo cuore sa che sovente anche tu hai maledetto altri.

23 Io ho esaminato tutto questo con sapienza. Ho detto: "Voglio acquistare sapienza"; ma la sapienza è rimasta lungi da me.

24 Una cosa ch’è tanto lontana e tanto profonda chi la potrà trovare?

25 Io mi sono applicato nel cuor mio a riflettere, a investigare, a cercare la sapienza e la ragion delle cose, e a riconoscere che l’empietà è una follia e la stoltezza una pazzia;

26 e ho trovato una cosa più amara della morte: la donna ch’è tutta tranelli, il cui cuore non è altro che reti, e le cui mani sono catene; colui ch’è gradito a Dio le sfugge, ma il peccatore riman preso da lei.

27 Ecco, questo ho trovato, dice l’Ecclesiaste, dopo aver esaminato le cose una ad una per afferrarne la ragione;

28 ecco quello che l’anima mia cerca ancora, senza ch’io l’abbia trovato: un uomo fra mille, l’ho trovato, ma una donna fra tutte, non l’ho trovata.

29 Questo soltanto ho trovato: che Dio ha fatto l’uomo retto, ma gli uomini hanno cercato molti sotterfugi.

1 A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth. 2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good. 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools. 6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity. 7 Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding. 8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning.

The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. 9 Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. 10 Don’t say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not ask wisely about this.

11 Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun. 12 For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

13 Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked? 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.

15 All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing. 16 Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself? 17 Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time? 18 It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all. 19 Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city. 20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin. 21 Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you; 22 for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others. 23 All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, "I will be wise;" but it was far from me. 24 That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out? 25 I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.

26 I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.

27 "Behold, I have found this," says the Preacher, "to one another, to find an explanation 28 which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those. 29 Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions."
