1 Or avvenne, l’anno quarto di Joiakim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, che questa parola fu rivolta all’Eterno a Geremia, in questi termini:

2 "Prenditi un rotolo da scrivere e scrivici tutte la parole che t’ho dette contro Israele, contro Giuda e contro tutte le nazioni, dal giorno che cominciai a parlarti, cioè dal tempo di Giosia, fino a quest’oggi.

3 Forse quei della casa di Giuda, udendo tutto il male ch’io penso di far loro, si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia, e io perdonerò la loro iniquità e il loro peccato".

4 Allora Geremia chiamò Baruc, figliuolo di Neria; e Baruc scrisse in un rotolo da scrivere, a dettatura di eremia, tutte le parole che l’Eterno avea dette a Geremia.

5 Poi Geremia diede quest’ordine a Baruc: "Io sono impedito, e non posso entrare nella casa dell’Eterno;

6 perciò, va’ tu, e leggi dal libro che hai scritto a mia dettatura, le parole dell’Eterno, in presenza del popolo, nella casa dell’Eterno, il giorno del digiuno; e leggile anche in presenza di tutti quei di Giuda, che saran venuti dalle loro città.

7 Forse presenteranno le loro supplicazioni all’Eterno, e si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia; perché l’ira e il furore che l’Eterno ha espresso contro questo popolo, sono grandi".

8 E Baruc, figliuolo di Neria, fece tutto quello che gli aveva ordinato il profeta Geremia, e lesse dal libro le parole dell’Eterno.

9 Or l’anno quinto di Joiakim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, il nono mese, fu pubblicato un digiuno nel cospetto dell’Eterno, per tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme e per tutto il popolo venuto dalle città di Giuda a Gerusalemme.

10 E Baruc lesse dal libro le parole di Geremia in presenza di tutto il popolo, nella casa dell’Eterno, nella camera di Ghemaria, figliuolo di Shafan, segretario, nel cortile superiore, all’ingresso della porta nuova della casa dell’Eterno.

11 Or Micaia, figliuolo di Ghemaria, figliuolo di Shafan, udì tutte le parole dell’Eterno, lette dal libro;

12 scese nella casa del re, nella camera del segretario, ed ecco che quivi stavan seduti tutti i capi: Elishama il segretario, Delaia figliuolo di Scemaia, Elnathan figliuolo di Acbor, Ghemaria figliuolo di Shafan, Sedekia figliuolo di Hanania, e tutti gli altri capi.

13 E Micaia riferì loro tutte le parole che aveva udite mentre Baruc leggeva il libro in presenza del popolo.

14 Allora tutti i capi mandarono Jehudi, figliuolo di Nethania, figliuolo di Scelemia, figliuolo di Cusci, a Baruc per dirgli: "Prendi in mano il rotolo dal quale tu hai letto in presenza del popolo, e vieni". E Baruc, figliuolo di Neria, prese in mano il rotolo, e venne a loro.

15 Ed essi gli dissero: "Siediti, e leggilo qui a noi". E Baruc lo lesse in loro presenza.

16 E quand’essi ebbero udito tutte quelle parole, si volsero spaventati gli uni agli altri, e dissero a Baruc: Non mancheremo di riferire tutte queste parole al re".

17 Poi chiesero a Baruc: "Dicci ora come hai scritto tutte queste parole uscite dalla sua bocca".

18 E Baruc rispose loro: "Egli m’ha dettato di bocca sua tutte queste parole, e io le ho scritte con inchiostro nel libro".

19 Allora i capi dissero a Baruc: "Vatti a nascondere tanto tu quanto Geremia; e nessuno sappia dove siete".

20 Poi andarono dal re, nel cortile, riposero il rotolo nella camera di Elishama, segretario, e riferirono al re tutte quelle parole.

21 E il re mandò Jehudi a prendere il rotolo; ed egli lo prese dalla camera di Elishama, segretario. E Jehudi lo lesse in presenza del re, e in presenza di tutti i capi che stavano in piè allato al re.

22 Or il re stava seduto nel suo palazzo d’inverno era il nono mese, e il braciere ardeva davanti a lui.

23 E quando Jehudi ebbe letto tre o quattro colonne, il re tagliò il libro col temperino, lo gettò nel fuoco del braciere, dove il rotolo fu interamente consumato dal fuoco del braciere.

24 Né il re né alcuno dei suoi servitori che udirono tutte quelle parole, rimasero spaventati o si stracciarono le vesti.

25 E benché Elnathan, Delaia e Ghemaria supplicassero il re perché non bruciasse il rotolo, egli non volle dar loro ascolto.

26 E il re ordinò a Jerahmeel, figliuolo del re, a Sesaia figliuolo di Azriel, e a Scelemia figliuolo di bdeel, di pigliare Baruc, segretario, e il profeta Geremia. Ma l’Eterno li nascose.

27 E dopo che il re ebbe bruciato il rotolo e le parole che Baruc aveva scritte a dettatura di Geremia, la parola dell’Eterno fu rivolta a Geremia in questi termini:

28 "Prenditi di nuovo un altro rotolo, e scrivici tutte le parole di prima ch’erano nel primo rotolo, che oiakim re di Giuda ha bruciato.

29 E riguardo a Joiakim, re di Giuda, tu dirai: Così parla l’Eterno: Tu hai bruciato quel rotolo, dicendo: Perché hai scritto in esso che il re di Babilonia verrà certamente e distruggerà questo paese e farà sì che non vi sarà più né uomo né bestia?

30 Perciò così parla l’Eterno riguardo a Joiakim re di Giuda: Egli non avrà alcuno che segga sul trono di avide, e il suo cadavere sarà gettato fuori, esposto al caldo del giorno e al gelo della notte.

31 E io punirò lui, la sua progenie e i suoi servitori della loro iniquità, e farò venire su loro, sugli abitanti di Gerusalemme e sugli uomini di Giuda tutto il male che ho pronunziato contro di loro, senza ch’essi abbian dato ascolto".

32 E Geremia prese un altro rotolo e lo diede a Baruc, figliuolo di Neria, segretario, il quale vi scrisse, a dettatura di Geremia, tutte le parole del libro che Joiakim, re di Giuda, avea bruciato nel fuoco; e vi furono aggiunte molte altre parole simili a quelle.

1 And it cometh to pass, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:

2 `Take to thee a roll of a book, and thou hast written on it all the words that I have spoken unto thee concerning Israel, and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day;

3 if so be the house of Israel do hear all the evil that I am thinking of doing to them, so that they turn back each from is evil way, and I have been propitious to their iniquity, and to their sin.`

4 And Jeremiah calleth Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch writeth from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Jehovah, that He hath spoken unto him, on a roll of a book.

5 And Jeremiah commandeth Baruch, saying, `I am restrained, I am not able to enter the house of Jehovah;

6 but thou hast entered -- and thou hast read in the roll that thou hast written from my mouth, the words of Jehovah, in the ears of the people, in the house of Jehovah, in the day of the fast, and also in the ears of all Judah who are coming in from their cities thou dost read them;

7 if so be their supplication doth fall before Jehovah, and they turn back each from his evil way, for great [is] the anger and the fury that Jehovah hath spoken concerning this people.`

8 And Baruch son of Neriah doth according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, to read in the book the words of Jehovah in the house of Jehovah.

9 And it cometh to pass, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, proclaimed a fast before Jehovah have all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people who are coming in from cities of Judah to Jerusalem;

10 and Baruch readeth in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the opening of the new gate of the house of Jehovah, in the ears of all the people.

11 And Michaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heareth all the words of Jehovah from off the book,

12 and he goeth down [to] the house of the king, unto the chamber of the scribe, and lo, there are all the heads sitting: Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan son of Acbor, and Gemariah son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the heads.

13 And declare to them doth Micaiah all the words that he hath heard, when Baruch readeth in the book in the ears of the people;

14 and all the heads send unto Baruch, Jehudi son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, saying, `The roll in which thou hast read in the ears of the people take in thy hand, and come.` And Baruch son of Neriah taketh the roll in his hand and cometh in unto them,

15 and they say unto him, `Sit down, we pray thee, and read it in our ears,` and Baruch readeth in their ears,

16 and it cometh to pass, when they hear all the words, they have been afraid one at another, and say unto Baruch, `We do surely declare to the king all these words.`

17 And they asked Baruch, saying, `Declare, we pray thee, to us, how didst thou write all these words -- from his mouth?`

18 And Baruch saith to them, `From his mouth, he pronounceth unto me all these words, and I am writing on the book with ink.`

19 And the heads say unto Baruch, `Go, be hidden, thou and Jeremiah, and let no one know where ye [are].`

20 And they go in unto the king, to the court, and the roll they have laid up in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and they declare in the ears of the king all the words.

21 And the king sendeth Jehudi to take the roll, and he taketh it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and Jehudi readeth it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the heads who are standing by the king;

22 and the king is sitting in the winter-house, in the ninth month, and the stove before him is burning,

23 and it cometh to pass, when Jehudi readeth three or four leaves, he cutteth it out with the scribe`s knife, and hath cast unto the fire, that [is] on the stove, till the consumption of all the roll by the fire that [is] on the stove.

24 And the king and all his servants who are hearing all these words have not been afraid, nor rent their garments.

25 And also Elnathan, and Delaiah, and Gemariah have interceded with the king not to burn the roll, and he hath not hearkened unto them.

26 And the king commandeth Jerahmeel son of Hammelek, and Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Jehovah doth hide them.

27 And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah -- after the king`s burning the roll, even the words that Baruch hath written from the mouth of Jeremiah -- saying:

28 `Turn, take to thee another roll, and write on it all the former words that were on the first roll, that Jehoiakim king of Judah burnt,

29 and unto Jehoiakim king of Judah thou dost say: Thus said Jehovah, Thou hast burnt this roll, saying, Wherefore hast thou written on it, saying, The king of Babylon surely cometh in, and hath destroyed this land, and caused to cease from it man and beast?

30 `Therefore, thus said Jehovah, concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He hath none sitting on the throne of David, and his carcase is cast out to heat by day, and to cold by night;

31 and I have charged on him, and on his seed, and on his servants, their iniquity; and I have brought in on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto the men of Judah, all the evil that I have spoken unto them, and they hearkened not.`

32 And Jeremiah hath taken another roll, and giveth it unto Baruch son of Neriah the scribe, and he writeth on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah hath burnt in the fire; and again there were added unto them many words like these.
