1 PAOLO, apostolo di Gesù Cristo, per la volontà di Dio, secondo la promessa della vita, che è in Cristo Gesù,

2 a Timoteo, figliuol diletto, grazia, misericordia, e pace, da Dio Padre, e dal Signor nostro Cristo Gesù.

3 IO rendo grazie a Dio, al qual servo fin da’ miei antenati, in pura coscienza; che non resto mai di ritener la memoria di te nelle mie orazioni, notte e giorno;

4 desideroso di vederti, ricordandomi delle tue lagrime, acciocchè io sia ripieno d’allegrezza;

5 riducendomi a memoria la fede non finta che è in te, la qual prima abitò in Loide tua avola, ed in Eunice tua madre; or son persuaso che abita in te ancora

6 Per la qual cagione io ti rammemoro che tu ravvivi il dono il Dio, il quale è in te per l’imposizione delle mie mani.

7 Poichè Iddio non ci ha dato spirito di timore; ma di forza, e d’amore, e di correzione.

8 Non recarti adunque a vergogna la testimonianza del Signor nostro, nè me suo prigione; anzi partecipa le afflizioni dell’evangelo, secondo la virtù di Dio.

9 Il qual ci ha salvati, e ci ha chiamati per santa vocazione; non secondo le nostre opere, ma secondo il proprio proponimento, e grazia, la quale ci è stata data in Cristo Gesù avanti i tempi de’ secoli.

10 Ed ora è stata manifestata per l’apparizione del Salvator nostro Gesù Cristo, che ha distrutta la morte, ed ha prodotta in luce la vita, e l’immortalità, per l’evangelo.

11 A che io sono stato posto banditore, ed apostolo, e dottor de’ Gentili.

12 Per la qual cagione ancora io soffro queste cose; ma non me ne vergogno; perciocchè io so a cui ho creduto, e son persuaso ch’egli è potente da guardare il mio deposito per quel giorno.

13 Ritieni la forma delle sane parole, che tu hai udite da me, in fede, e carità, che è in Cristo Gesù.

14 Guarda il buon deposito, per lo Spirito Santo, che abita in noi

15 Tu sai questo: che tutti quelli che son nell’Asia si son ritratti da me; de’ quali è Figello, ed Ermogene.

16 Conceda il Signore misericordia alla famiglia di Onesiforo; perciocchè spesse volte egli mi ha ricreato, e non si è vergognato della mia catena.

17 Anzi, essendo a Roma, studiosissimamente mi ha cercato, e mi ha trovato.

18 Concedagli il Signore di trovar misericordia presso il Signore in quel giorno. Quanti servigi ancora egli ha fatti in Efeso, tu il sai molto bene

1 Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will, according to promise of life, the {life} which {is} in Christ Jesus,

2 to Timotheus, {my} beloved child: grace, mercy, peace, from God {the} Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I am thankful to God, whom I serve from {my} forefathers with pure conscience, how unceasingly I have the remembrance of thee in my supplications night and day,

4 earnestly desiring to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 calling to mind the unfeigned faith which {has been} in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 For which cause I put thee in mind to rekindle the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion.

8 Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer evil along with the glad tidings, according to the power of God;

9 who has saved us, and has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to {his} own purpose and grace, which {was} given to us in Christ Jesus before {the} ages of time,

10 but has been made manifest now by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and brought to light life and incorruptibility by the glad tidings;

11 to which *I* have been appointed a herald and apostle and teacher of {the} nations.

12 For which cause also I suffer these things; but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep for that day the deposit I have entrusted to him.

13 Have an outline of sound words, which {words} thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which {are} in Christ Jesus.

14 Keep, by the Holy Spirit which dwells in us, the good deposit entrusted.

15 Thou knowest this, that all who {are} in Asia, of whom is Phygellus and Hermogenes, have turned away from me.

16 The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he has often refreshed me, and has not been ashamed of my chain;

17 but being in Rome sought me out very diligently, and found {me} -

18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from {the} Lord in that day-and how much service he rendered in Ephesus *thou* knowest best.
