1 Avendo adunque queste promesse, cari miei, purghiamoci d’ogni contaminazione di carne, e di spirito, compiendo la nostra santificazione nel timor di Dio.

2 DATECI luogo in voi; noi non abbiam fatto torto ad alcuno, non abbiamo corrotto alcuno, non abbiamo frodato alcuno.

3 Io non lo dico a vostra condannazione; perciocchè già innanzi ho detto che voi siete ne’ cuori nostri, da morire insieme, e da vivere insieme.

4 Io ho gran libertà di parlare inverso voi, io ho molto di che gloriarmi di voi; io son ripieno di consolazione, io soprabbondo di letizia in tutta la nostra afflizione

5 Perciocchè, essendo noi venuti in Macedonia, la nostra carne non ha avuta requie alcuna; ma siamo stati afflitti in ogni maniera: combattimenti di fuori, spaventi di dentro.

6 Ma Iddio, che consola gli umiliati, ci ha consolati per la venuta di Tito.

7 E non sol per la venuta d’esso, ma ancora per la consolazione della quale è stato consolato appresso di voi; rapportandoci la vostra grande affezione, il vostro pianto, il vostro zelo per me; talchè io me ne son molto maggiormente rallegrato.

8 Perciocchè, benchè io vi abbia contristati per quell’epistola, ora non me ne pento, benchè io me ne fossi pentito; poichè io vedo che quell’epistola, quantunque per un breve tempo, vi ha contristati.

9 Or mi rallegro, non perchè siate stati contristati, ma perchè siete stati contristati a ravvedimento; perciocchè voi siete stati contristati secondo Iddio, acciocchè in cosa alcuna voi non riceveste alcun danno da noi.

10 Poichè la tristizia secondo Iddio produce ravvedimento a salute, del quale l’uomo non si pente mai; ma la tristizia del mondo produce la morte.

11 Perciocchè, ecco, questo stesso fatto che voi siete stati contristati secondo Iddio, quanta premura ha prodotta in voi, qual giustificazione, quale indegnazione, qual timore, qual grande affezione, quale zelo, qual punizione! per ogni maniera voi avete dimostrato che siete puri in quest’affare

12 Benchè adunque io vi abbia scritto, io non l’ho fatto, nè per colui che ha fatta l’ingiuria, nè per colui a cui è stata fatta; ma, acciocchè fosse manifestato fra voi, davanti a Dio, lo studio nostro, che noi abbiamo per voi.

13 Perciò, noi siamo stati consolati; ed oltre alla consolazione che noi abbiamo avuta di voi, vie più ci siam rallegrati per l’allegrezza di Tito, perciocchè il suo spirito è stato ricreato da voi tutti.

14 Perciocchè, se mi sono presso lui gloriato di voi in cosa alcuna, non sono stato confuso; ma, come vi abbiam parlato in tutte le cose in verità, così ancora ciò di che ci eravamo gloriati a Tito si è trovato verità.

15 Laonde ancora egli è vie più sviscerato inverso voi, quando si ricorda dell’ubbidienza di voi tutti, come l’avete ricevuto con timore, e tremore.

16 Io mi rallegro adunque che in ogni cosa io mi posso confidar di voi

1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. 3 I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. 5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. 9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12 Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. 13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. 14 For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth. 15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.
