1 PAOLO, apostolo di Gesù Cristo, per comandamento di Dio, nostro Salvatore; e del Signor Gesù Cristo, nostra speranza;2 a Timoteo, mio vero figliuolo in fede; grazia, misericordia, e pace, da Dio nostro padre, e da Cristo Gesù, nostro Signore.3 SICCOME io ti esortai di rimanere in Efeso, quando io andava in Macedonia, fa’ che tu dinunzi ad alcuni che non insegnino dottrina diversa.4 E che non attendano a favole, ed a genealogie senza fine; le quali producono piuttosto quistioni, che edificazion di Dio, che è in fede5 Or il fine del comandamento è carità, di cuor puro, e di buona coscienza, e di fede non finta.6 Dalle quali cose alcuni essendosi sviati, si son rivolti ad un vano parlare;7 volendo esser dottori della legge, non intendendo nè le cose che dicono, nè quelle delle quali affermano.8 Or noi sappiamo che la legge è buona, se alcuno l’usa legittimamente.9 Sapendo questo: che la legge non è posta al giusto, ma agl’iniqui, e ribelli, agli empi, e peccatori, agli scellerati, e profani, agli uccisori di padri e madri,10 a’ micidiali, a’ fornicatori, a quelli che usano co’ maschi, a’ rubatori d’uomini, a’ falsari, agli spergiuratori; e se vi è alcun’altra cosa contraria alla sana dottrina;11 secondo l’evangelo della gloria del beato Iddio, il qual m’è stato fidato12 E rendo grazie a Cristo nostro Signore, il qual mi fortifica, ch’egli mi ha reputato fedele, ponendo al ministerio me,13 il quale innanzi era bestemmiatore, e persecutore, ed ingiurioso; ma misericordia mi è stata fatta, perciocchè io lo feci ignorantemente, non avendo la fede.14 Ma la grazia del Signor nostro è soprabbondata, con fede e carità, che è in Cristo Gesù.15 Certa è questa parola, e degna d’essere accettata per ogni maniera: che Cristo Gesù è venuto nel mondo, per salvare i peccatori, de’ quali io sono il primo.16 Ma, per questo mi è stata fatta misericordia, acciocchè Gesù Cristo mostrasse in me primieramente tutta la sua clemenza, per essere esempio a coloro che per l’avvenire crederebbero in lui a vita eterna.17 Or al Re de’ secoli, immortale, invisibile, a Dio solo savio, sia onore, e gloria ne’ secoli de’ secoli. Amen18 Io ti raccomando questo comandamento, o figliuol Timoteo: che secondo le profezie che innanzi sono state di te, tu guerreggi, in virtù d’esse, la buona guerra.19 Avendo fede, e buona coscienza; la quale avendo alcuni gettata via, hanno fatto naufragio intorno alla fede.20 De’ quali è Imeneo, ed Alessandro, i quali io ho dati in man di Satana, acciocchè sieno castigati, ed ammaestrati a non bestemmiare

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to a command of God our Saviour, and of the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,2 to Timotheus -- genuine child in faith: Grace, kindness, peace, from God our Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord,3 according as I did exhort thee to remain in Ephesus -- I going on to Macedonia -- that thou mightest charge certain not to teach any other thing,4 nor to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, that cause questions rather than the building up of God that is in faith: --5 And the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned,6 from which certain, having swerved, did turn aside to vain discourse,7 willing to be teachers of law, not understanding either the things they say, nor concerning what they asseverate,8 and we have known that the law [is] good, if any one may use it lawfully;9 having known this, that for a righteous man law is not set, but for lawless and insubordinate persons, ungodly and sinners, impious and profane, parricides and matricides, men-slayers,10 whoremongers, sodomites, men-stealers, liars, perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that to sound doctrine is adverse,11 according to the good news of the glory of the blessed God, with which I was entrusted.12 And I give thanks to him who enabled me -- Christ Jesus our Lord -- that he did reckon me stedfast, having put [me] to the ministration,13 who before was speaking evil, and persecuting, and insulting, but I found kindness, because, being ignorant, I did [it] in unbelief,14 and exceedingly abound did the grace of our Lord, with faith and love that [is] in Christ Jesus:15 stedfast [is] the word, and of all acceptation worthy, that Christ Jesus came to the world to save sinners -- first of whom I am;16 but because of this I found kindness, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern of those about to believe on him to life age-during:17 and to the King of the ages, the incorruptible, invisible, only wise God, [is] honour and glory -- to the ages of the ages! Amen.18 This charge I commit to thee, child Timotheus, according to the prophesies that went before upon thee, that thou mayest war in them the good warfare,19 having faith and a good conscience, which certain having thrust away, concerning the faith did make shipwreck,20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I did deliver to the Adversary, that they might be instructed not to speak evil.
