1 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words. 2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.*33.2 in my mouth: Heb. in my palate 3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly. 4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. 5 If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up. 6 Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.*33.6 wish: Heb. mouth*33.6 formed: Heb. cut 7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

8 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,*33.8 hearing: Heb. ears 9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. 10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, 11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. 12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. 13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.*33.13 he giveth…: Heb. he answereth not

14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; 16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,*33.16 he…: Heb. he revealeth, or, uncovereth 17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.*33.17 purpose: Heb. work 18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.*33.18 from perishing: Heb. from passing

29 Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,*33.29 oftentimes: Heb. twice and thrice 30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. 31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak. 32 If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee. 33 If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

Suite du discours d’Elihu.

1 C’est pourquoi, Job, écoute, je te prie, mon discours, et prête l’oreille à toutes mes paroles. 2 Voici maintenant, j’ouvre ma bouche, ma langue parle dans mon palais. 3 Mes paroles répondront à la droiture de mon coeur, et mes lèvres prononceront une doctrine pure. 4 L’esprit du Dieu Fort m’a fait, et le souffle du Tout-puissant m’a donné la vie. 5 Si tu peux, réponds-moi, dresse-toi contre moi, demeure ferme. 6 Voici, je suis pour le Dieu Fort ; selon que tu en as parlé ; j’ai aussi été formé de la terre tout comme toi. 7 Voici, ma frayeur ne te troublera point, et ma main ne s’appesantira point sur toi. 8 Quoi qu’il en soit, tu as dit, moi l’entendant, et j’ai ouï la voix de tes discours, disant : 9 Je suis pur, et sans péché ; je suis net, et il n’y a point d’iniquité en moi. 10 Voici, il a cherché à rompre avec moi, il me tient pour son ennemi. 11 Il a mis mes pieds aux ceps, il épie tous mes chemins. 12 Voici, je te réponds qu’en cela tu n’as pas été juste ; car Dieu sera toujours plus grand que l’homme mortel. 13 Pourquoi donc as-tu plaidé contre lui ? car il ne rend pas compte de toutes ses actions. 14 Bien que le Dieu Fort parle une première fois, et une seconde fois à celui qui n’aura pas pris garde à la première ; 15 Par des songes, par des visions de nuit, quand un profond sommeil tombe sur les hommes, et lorsqu’ils dorment dans leur lit ; 16 Alors il ouvre l’oreille aux hommes, et scelle leur châtiment. 17 Afin de détourner l’homme d’une mauvaise action, et de rabaisser la fierté de l’homme. 18 Ainsi il garantit son âme de la fosse, et sa vie, de l’épée. 19 L’homme est aussi châtié par des douleurs dans son lit, et tous ses os sont brisés. 20 Alors sa vie lui fait avoir en horreur le pain, et son âme la viande désirable. 21 Sa chair est tellement consumée qu’elle ne paraît plus ; et ses os sont tellement brisés, qu’on n’y connaît plus rien. 22 Son âme approche de la fosse, et sa vie, des choses qui font mourir. 23 Que s’il y a pour cet homme-là un messager, qui parle pour lui, (un d’entre mille) qui manifeste à cet homme son devoir, 24 Alors il aura pitié de lui, et il dira : Garantis-le, afin qu’il ne descende pas dans la fosse ; j’ai trouvé la propitiation. 25 Sa chair deviendra plus délicate qu’elle n’était dans son enfance, et il sera rajeuni. 26 Il fléchira Dieu par ses prières, et Dieu s’apaisera envers lui, et lui fera voir sa face avec joie, et lui rendra sa justice. 27 Il regardera vers les hommes, et dira : J’avais péché, j’avais renversé le droit, et cela ne m’avait point profité. 28 Mais Dieu a garanti mon âme, afin qu’elle ne passât point par la fosse, et ma vie voit la lumière. 29 Voilà, le Dieu Fort fait toutes ces choses, deux et trois fois envers l’homme ; 30 Pour retirer son âme de la fosse, afin qu’elle soit éclairée de la lumière des vivants. 31 Sois attentif, Job, écoute-moi ; tais-toi, et je parlerai. 32 Et si tu as de quoi parler, réponds-moi, parle ; car je désire de te justifier. 33 Sinon, écoute-moi, tais-toi, et je t’enseignerai la sagesse.
