1 Furthermore Elihu answered and said, 2 Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge. 3 For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.*34.3 mouth: Heb. palate 4 Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good. 5 For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment. 6 Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.*34.6 my wound: Heb. mine arrow 7 What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? 8 Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. 9 For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

10 Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.*34.10 men…: Heb. men of heart 11 For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. 12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment. 13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?*34.13 the whole: Heb. all of it? 14 If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;*34.14 man: Heb. him 15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words. 17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?*34.17 govern: Heb. bind? 18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? 19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. 20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.*34.20 the mighty…: Heb. they shall take away the mighty 21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. 22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. 23 For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.*34.23 enter: Heb. go 24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.*34.24 number: Heb. searching out 25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.*34.25 destroyed: Heb. crushed 26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;*34.26 open…: Heb. place of beholders 27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:*34.27 him: Heb. after him 28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. 29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: 30 That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

31 Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: 32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. 33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.*34.33 according…: Heb. from with thee? 34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.*34.34 of…: Heb. of heart 35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. 36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.*34.36 My…: or, My father, let Job be tried 37 For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

Elihu continue son discours des droits et de la justice de Dieu.

1 Elihu donc reprit la parole, et dit : 2 Vous sages écoutez mes discours, et vous qui avez de l’intelligence, prêtez-moi l’oreille. 3 Car l’oreille juge des discours, ainsi que le palais savoure ce que l’on mange. 4 Choisissons de quoi nous devons disputer comme en jugement, puis nous connaîtrons entre nous ce qui est bon. 5 Car Job a dit : Je suis juste, et cependant le Dieu Fort a mis mon droit à l’écart. 6 Mentirais-je à mon droit ? ma flèche est mortelle, sans que j’aie commis de crime. 7 Mais où y a-t-il un homme comme Job qui avale la moquerie comme de l’eau ? 8 Qui marche en la compagnie des ouvriers d’iniquité, et qui fréquente les méchants ? 9 Car Job a dit, il ne sert de rien à l’homme de se plaire avec Dieu. 10 C’est pourquoi vous qui avez de l’intelligence écoutez-moi. A Dieu ne plaise qu’il y ait de la méchanceté dans le Dieu Fort, et de l’injustice dans le Tout-puissant ! 11 Car il rendra à l’homme selon son oeuvre, et il fera trouver à chacun selon sa voie. 12 Certainement, le Dieu Fort ne déclare point méchant l’homme de bien, et le Tout-puissant ne renverse point le droit. 13 Qui est-ce qui lui a donné la terre en charge ? ou qui est-ce qui a placé la terre habitable toute entière ? 14 Si Dieu prenait garde à lui de près, il retirerait à soi son esprit et son souffle. 15 Toute chair expirerait ensemble, et l’homme retournerait dans la poudre. 16 Si donc tu as de l’intelligence, écoute ceci, prête l’oreille à ce que tu entendras de moi. 17 Comment celui qui n’aimerait pas à faire justice, jugerait-il le monde ? et condamneras-tu comme méchant celui qui est souverainement juste ? 18 Dira-t-on à un Roi, qu’il est un scélérat ? et aux Princes, qu’ils sont des méchants ? 19 Combien moins le dira-t-on à celui qui n’a point d’égard à la personne des grands, et qui ne connaît point les riches pour les préférer aux pauvres, parce qu’ils sont tous l’ouvrage de ses mains. 20 Ils mourront en un moment, et à minuit tout un peuple sera rempli de frayeur et passera ; et le fort sera emporté sans qu’aucune main le frappe. 21 Car ses yeux sont sur les voies de chacun, et il regarde tous leurs pas. 22 Il n’y a ni ténèbres ni ombre de mort, où se puissent cacher les ouvriers d’iniquité. 23 Mais il n’impute rien à l’homme contre la justice, lorsque l’homme vient à plaider avec le Dieu Fort. 24 Il brise, par des voies incompréhensibles, les hommes puissants, et il en établit d’autres en leur place. 25 Parce qu’il connaît leurs oeuvres, il les renverse la nuit, et sont brisés. 26 Parce qu’ils sont méchants, il les froisse à la vue de tout le monde. 27 A cause qu’ils se sont ainsi détournés de lui, et qu’ils n’ont considéré aucune de ses voies ; 28 En sorte qu’ils ont fait monter le cri du pauvre jusqu’à lui, et qu’il a entendu la clameur des affligés. 29 Que s’il donne du repos, qui est-ce qui causera du trouble ? S’il cache sa face à quelqu’un, qui est-ce qui le regardera, soit qu’il s’agisse de toute une nation, ou qu’il ne s’agisse que d’un seul homme ? 30 Afin que l’hypocrite ne règne point, de peur qu’il ne soit un filet pour le peuple. 31 Certes, tu devrais avoir dit au Dieu Fort : J’ai souffert ; mais je ne pécherai plus ; 32 Et toi, Seigneur! enseigne-moi ce qui est au delà de ce que je vois ; et si j’ai mal fait, je ne continuerai plus. 33 Mais Dieu ne te le rendra-t-il pas, puisque tu as rejeté son châtiment, quand tu as fait le choix que tu as fait ? Pour moi, je ne saurais que dire à cela ; mais toi, si tu as quelque chose à répondre, parle. 34 Les gens de bon sens diront avec moi, et tout homme sage en conviendra, 35 Que Job n’a pas parlé avec connaissance, et que ses paroles non point été avec intelligence. 36 Ha ! mon père, que Job soit éprouvé jusqu’à ce qu’il soit vaincu, puisqu’il a répondu comme les impies. 37 Car autrement il ajoutera péché sur péché, il battra des mains entre nous, et parlera de plus en plus contre le Dieu Fort.
