1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. 24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. 28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

1 Mijn lieve kinderen, ik schrijf jullie deze brief opdat jullie niet zondigen. Als iemand echter toch zondigt, dan hebben we Iemand die voorspraak voor ons doet bij de Vader: Jezus Christus, de Rechtvaardige. 2 Hij is bovendien het zoenoffer voor onze zonden, en niet enkel voor de onze maar ook voor die van de hele wereld.

3 Dat we Hem kennen blijkt uit het feit dat we ons aan zijn geboden houden. 4 Wie zegt dat hij Hem kent, maar zich niet aan zijn geboden houdt, is een leugenaar en de waarheid woont niet in hem. 5 Als iemand zich daarentegen houdt aan hetgeen God zegt, is hij werkelijk volgroeid in zijn liefde voor God. Daaruit blijkt dat we bij Hem horen. 6 Wie zegt dat hij met Christus verbonden is, behoort te leven zoals Christus heeft geleefd.

7 Beste vrienden, wat ik jullie schrijf is geen nieuw gebod, maar een oud gebod waarover jullie al vanaf het begin beschikken. Het oude gebod is de boodschap die jullie hebben gehoord. 8 Tegelijkertijd is hetgeen ik jullie schrijf een nieuw gebod, waarvan de realisatie zichtbaar is in Hem en in jullie, want de duisternis is aan het verdwijnen en het ware licht schijnt reeds.

9 Wie zegt dat hij zich in het licht bevindt maar zijn broeder of zuster hatelijk behandelt, bevindt zich nog altijd in de duisternis. 10 Als iemand liefdevol met zijn broeder of zuster omgaat, leeft hij in het licht en is er voor hem geen aanleiding om te struikelen. 11 Maar wie zijn broeder of zuster hatelijk behandelt, bevindt zich in de duisternis. Hij wandelt in de duisternis zonder te weten waar hij naartoe gaat, want door de duisternis kan hij niet zien.

12 Lieve kinderen, ik schrijf jullie dat jullie zonden zijn vergeven dankzij Jezus. 13 Ouderen, aan jullie schrijf ik dat jullie Hem kennen, die al vanaf het begin bestaat. Jongeren, aan jullie schrijf ik dat jullie de duivel hebben overwonnen. 14 Kinderen, aan jullie schrijf ik dat jullie de Vader kennen. Ouderen, aan jullie schrijf ik dat jullie Hem kennen, die al vanaf het begin bestaat. Jongeren, aan jullie schrijf ik dat jullie sterk zijn: de boodschap van God woont in jullie en jullie hebben de duivel overwonnen.

15 Heb de wereld en hetgeen zich in de wereld bevindt niet lief. Als iemand de wereld liefheeft, heeft hij de Vader niet lief. 16 Want alles wat zich in de wereld bevindt – de zaken waarnaar de zondige natuur verlangt, de dingen waarnaar ogen begeerlijk kijken en een arrogante levensstijl – komt niet van de Vader, maar van de wereld. 17 De wereld en alles wat zij bevat waarnaar mensen verlangen, zullen verdwijnen. Maar wie doet wat God wil, leeft voor eeuwig.

18 Kinderen, het laatste uur is aangebroken. Zoals jullie hebben gehoord, moet de antichrist komen. En nu zijn er al veel antichristen verschenen; daaruit blijkt dat het laatste uur is aangebroken. 19 Die mensen komen uit ons midden, maar ze horen niet bij ons. Als ze wel bij ons zouden horen, dan zouden ze bij ons gebleven zijn, maar hieruit blijkt dat ze geen van allen bij ons horen.

20 Jullie daarentegen zijn door de Heilige gezalfd en jullie kennen de waarheid. 21 Ik schrijf jullie dus niet omdat jullie de waarheid niet zouden kennen, want jullie kennen die wél, en uit de waarheid komt geen enkele leugen voort. 22 Wie is dus de leugenaar? Hij die ontkent dat Jezus de Messias is; dat is de antichrist, degene die zowel de Vader als de Zoon verloochent. 23 Niemand die de Zoon verloochent, hoort bij de Vader, maar wie de Zoon erkent, hoort bij de Vader.

24 Daarom moeten jullie je houden aan hetgeen jullie vanaf het begin hebben gehoord. En als jullie je houden aan hetgeen jullie vanaf het begin hebben gehoord, dan blijven jullie met de Zoon en de Vader verbonden. 25 En dit is wat Hij ons heeft beloofd: het eeuwig leven.

26 Ik schrijf jullie deze brief over de mensen die jullie proberen te misleiden. 27 Het is toch niet nodig dat iemand jullie onderwijst? Immers, de Heilige Geest is als een zalving die jullie van Christus hebben ontvangen; Hij rust op jullie en onderwijst jullie over alles. Wat Hij jullie leert is de waarheid en geen leugen. Blijf dus met Christus verbonden, in overeenstemming met dat onderwijs.

28 Kortom, lieve kinderen, blijf met Hem verbonden. Dan zullen wij vol vertrouwen zijn wanneer Hij verschijnt, en ons niet tegenover Hem schamen wanneer Hij komt. 29 Zoals jullie weten, is Hij rechtvaardig; erken dan ook dat ieder die rechtvaardig handelt, van God het nieuwe leven heeft gekregen.
