1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

1 Beste vrienden, dit is al de tweede brief die ik aan jullie schrijf om jullie geheugen op te frissen en jullie aan te sporen om zuiver te denken. 2 Denk terug aan de woorden die in het verleden door de heilige profeten zijn gesproken en aan het gebod van onze Heer en redder dat jullie van de apostelen hebben ontvangen.

3 Jullie moeten bovenal weten dat er tegen het einde van de tijd spotters zullen komen, die hun eigen verlangens zullen volgen en die spottend zullen vragen: 4 ‘Waar is Gods beloofde komst? Want sinds het overlijden van onze voorouders blijft alles zoals het vanaf het begin van de schepping is geweest.’ 5 Zij houden er bewust geen rekening mee dat het heelal lang geleden is ontstaan doordat God het bevel gaf, en de aarde werd gevormd vanuit het water en te midden van het water. 6 Het was ook door water – door de zondvloed – dat de toenmalige wereld werd vernietigd. 7 En door hetzelfde bevel van God worden het huidige heelal en de huidige aarde bewaard, om te worden verbrand op de Oordeelsdag. Ook de goddelozen zullen dan worden vernietigd.

8 Met één ding moeten jullie goed rekening houden, beste vrienden: één dag is voor de Heer als duizend jaar en duizend jaar als één dag. 9 De Heer treuzelt niet met wat Hij heeft beloofd, al vinden sommigen dat Hij treuzelt. Integendeel, Hij heeft geduld met jullie: Hij wil niet dat er iemand verloren gaat, maar dat alle mensen tot inkeer komen.

10 De Dag van de Heer zal komen als een dief. Dan zal het heelal met veel lawaai vergaan en zullen de elementen brandend uiteenvallen. De aarde en alles wat daar gebeurt zullen worden onthuld. 11 Omdat alles op die manier zal te gronde gaan, moeten jullie je zuiver en vol eerbied voor God gedragen. 12 Kijk uit naar de Dag van God – waarop het heelal door brand wordt verwoest en de elementen door hitte worden verteerd – en breng de komst ervan dichterbij. 13 Op grond van Gods belofte kijken wij uit naar een nieuw heelal met een nieuwe aarde, waar gerechtigheid zal wonen. 14 Beste vrienden, aangezien jullie hiernaar uitkijken, moeten jullie je uiterste best doen om dan smetteloos en onberispelijk te worden aangetroffen, in vrede met Hem. 15 Bedenk dat het geduld van onze Heer mensen in staat stelt om gered te worden, zoals onze geliefde broeder Paulus ook al aan jullie schreef met de wijsheid die hem is gegeven, 16 en zoals hij schrijft in al zijn brieven over dit onderwerp. Sommige zaken in die brieven zijn moeilijk te begrijpen en worden door onkundige en onstandvastige mensen verdraaid. Ze doen dat trouwens ook met de overige Schriften en het zal tot hun eigen ondergang leiden.

17 Beste vrienden, omdat jullie dit al weten, moeten jullie waakzaam zijn en je niet laten meeslepen op het dwaalspoor van wetteloze mensen. Laat je niet van je stuk brengen, 18 maar laat de genade en kennis van onze Heer en redder Jezus Christus in je groeien. Hem komt alle eer toe, nu en tot in eeuwigheid. Amen.
