1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: 7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; 8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; 24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church: 25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

2 Aan: onze trouwe broeders en zusters in Kolosse, jullie die heilig zijn omdat jullie bij Christus Jezus horen.

Ik wens jullie de genade en vrede van God, onze Vader toe.

3 Telkens wanneer wij voor jullie bidden, danken wij God, de Vader van onze Heer Jezus Christus. 4 Wij hebben namelijk gehoord van jullie geloof in Christus Jezus en van jullie liefde voor iedereen die bij God hoort. 5 Beide komen voort uit jullie verwachting van hetgeen in de hemel voor jullie klaarligt. Daarover hebben jullie gehoord toen de verkondiging van de waarheid, het evangelie, 6 jullie bereikte. Het evangelie draagt vrucht en groeit in de hele wereld, zoals dat bij jullie gebeurde vanaf de dag dat jullie het hoorden en de ware betekenis van Gods genade leerden kennen. 7 Jullie vernamen het van Epafras, onze geliefde collega in dienst van God. Hij dient Christus trouw namens jullie, 8 en hij heeft ons verteld over de liefde die de Geest in jullie opwekt.

9 Daarom bidden we, sinds de dag dat we daarover hoorden, onophoudelijk dat jullie vol kennis zullen zijn van hetgeen God wil, en dat de Geest jullie alle wijsheid en inzicht zal schenken. 10 Dan zal jullie gedrag waardig zijn in de ogen van de Heer en door Hem volledig worden goedgekeurd. Ook zullen jullie dan vrucht dragen in de vorm van allerlei goede daden en groeien in de kennis van God. 11 Bovendien zal Hij, in zijn luisterrijke macht, jullie alle kracht schenken die je nodig hebt om alles geduldig en volhardend te verdragen, je te verheugen 12 en de Vader te danken. Want Hij heeft ervoor gezorgd dat we mogen delen in de erfenis die bestemd is voor wie bij Hem hoort en in het licht leeft. 13 Hij heeft ons uit de macht van de duisternis gered en ons overgeplaatst naar het koninkrijk van zijn geliefde Zoon, 14 die ons de verlossing bracht, de vergeving van zonden.

15 In Christus is de onzichtbare God zichtbaar geworden en Christus is de eerstgeborene van de hele schepping. 16 Alles in de hemel en op aarde – het zichtbare en het onzichtbare, zelfs de vorsten, machten, heersers en gezagsdragers – is geschapen door en voor Christus. 17 Hij bestond vóór alles en alles bestaat dankzij Hem. 18 Ook is Hij het hoofd van de kerk – en de kerk is zijn lichaam. Hij is de oorsprong en omdat Hij als eerste uit de dood verrees, neemt Hij in alles de eerste plaats in. 19 God had namelijk in zijn goedheid besloten, ten volle in Christus aanwezig te zijn, 20 en door middel van Hem alle dingen, zowel op aarde als in de hemel, met zich te verzoenen en vrede te brengen door Christus' dood aan het kruis.

21 Vroeger waren jullie van God vervreemd en Hem vijandig gezind. Jullie deden slechte dingen. 22 Maar nu heeft Hij jullie met Zich verzoend door Christus' sterfelijke lichaam – door zijn dood – zodat jullie ten overstaan van Hem zuiver, smetteloos en onberispelijk zijn. 23 Maar dat geldt enkel als je het geloof trouw blijft, standvastig en onwrikbaar bent en je niet laat afbrengen van de hoop die het evangelie biedt – het evangelie dat jullie hebben gehoord en dat aan alle schepselen in de wereld werd verkondigd. En ik, Paulus, sta in dienst van dat evangelie.

24 Ik verheug mij dat ik nu voor jullie lijd. Ik vul in mijn lichaam aan wat er nog ontbreekt aan het lijden voor Christus ten bate van zijn lichaam, de kerk. 25 Ik ben ten dienste van de kerk gesteld op basis van de opdracht die God mij heeft gegeven: zijn boodschap ten volle aan jullie bekendmaken. 26 Die boodschap is het geheim dat eeuwen en generaties lang verborgen is geweest, maar dat nu is onthuld aan wie bij God horen. 27 God besloot aan hen bekend te maken hoe glorieus de pracht van dit geheim is voor de niet-Joden: Christus leeft in jullie en dankzij Hem wacht jullie de hemel. 28 En het is Christus die wij verkondigen: we waarschuwen iedereen en onderwijzen iedereen, met gebruik van alle wijsheid, omdat we iedereen naar het volle leven met Christus willen leiden. 29 Het is daarvoor dat ik mij inspan en zwoeg, met behulp van zijn kracht, die volop in mij aan het werk is.
