1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; 8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; 9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Aan: de christenen in Efeze en aan allen die bij Christus Jezus horen en Hem trouw zijn.

2 Ik wens jullie de genade en vrede van God, onze Vader, en van de Heer Jezus Christus toe.

3 Ik prijs de God en Vader van onze Heer Jezus Christus. Hij zegent ons met alle geestelijke zegeningen in het bovennatuurlijke, omdat wij bij Christus horen. 4 Voordat Hij de fundering van de wereld legde, heeft God ons namelijk uitverkoren om ten overstaan van Hem zuiver en smetteloos te zijn, omdat wij bij Christus horen. 5 Bovendien heeft Hij ons voorbestemd om door middel van Jezus Christus als Gods zonen te worden geadopteerd, omdat Hij dat in zijn goedheid voor ons wilde. 6 Zijn doel was dat wij zijn prachtige genade zouden prijzen, waarmee Hij ons heeft begunstigd omdat wij bij zijn geliefde Zoon horen. 7 Onze verlossing – de vergeving van onze overtredingen – hebben we aan Hem te danken: zijn bloed is voor ons vergoten. Zo toonde God de luisterrijke genade 8 waarmee Hij ons in zijn volkomen wijsheid en inzicht heeft overstelpt. 9 God heeft ons zijn geheim bekendgemaakt – het besluit dat Hij in zijn goedheid had genomen en dat Hij door middel van Christus wilde uitvoeren. 10 Wanneer de tijd rijp is, zal Hij namelijk alles wat in de hemel en op aarde is, samenbrengen onder één hoofd: Christus. 11 Omdat wij bij Christus horen, zijn wij bovendien tot erfgenamen aangesteld, voorbestemd volgens het plan van Diegene die alles uitwerkt overeenkomstig zijn besluit en wil. 12 Zijn plan voor ons, die als eersten onze hoop in Christus hebben gesteld, is dat ons leven een eerbetoon aan zijn grootheid zou zijn. 13 Ook jullie zijn tot geloof in Christus gekomen, nadat jullie de boodschap van de waarheid hadden gehoord – het evangelie dat jullie redding bracht. Omdat jullie bij Hem horen, hebben jullie bovendien de beloofde Heilige Geest ontvangen, als een waarmerk 14 en als een voorschot op onze erfenis – de verlossing van wie God toebehoren. Laten we zijn grootheid prijzen!

15 Het is daarom dat ik, sinds ik heb gehoord van jullie geloof in de Heer Jezus en van jullie liefde voor iedereen die bij Hem hoort, 16 God onophoudelijk voor jullie dank wanneer ik voor jullie bid. 17 Dan bid ik dat de God van onze Heer Jezus Christus, de verheven Vader, jullie de Geest van wijsheid en inzicht zal geven en dat jullie Hem beter zullen leren kennen. 18 Ook bid ik dat jullie het inzicht zullen ontvangen om te beseffen tot welke hoop Hij jullie heeft geroepen, hoe prachtig de erfenis is van de mensen die bij Hem horen, 19 en hoe overstelpend groot zijn kracht is voor ons die geloven. 20 Dit is dezelfde kracht die in Christus werkzaam was toen God Hem uit de dood opwekte en Hem een plaats in de hemel gaf, aan zijn rechterzijde, 21 hoog boven alle heersers, machten, krachten, vorsten en alle namen en titels, niet alleen in de huidige wereld maar ook in de komende. 22 God heeft Christus het gezag over alles gegeven en Hem als Hoofd van alles aangesteld, ten bate van de kerk. 23 De kerk is zijn lichaam en Hij is volledig in haar aanwezig, zoals Hij in alles overal volledig aanwezig zal zijn.
