1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Wie bij Christus Jezus hoort, is dus niet langer veroordeeld. 2 Dankzij Christus Jezus heeft de wet van de Geest, die tot het leven leidt, je namelijk bevrijd van de wet van zonde en de dood. 3 Door zijn eigen Zoon te sturen in een lichaam zoals dat van zondige mensen, heeft God komaf gemaakt met de zonde in de menselijke natuur. De Wet was daartoe niet in staat, want zij wordt tegengewerkt door onze zondige natuur. 4 Wij die ons niet laten leiden door onze zondige natuur maar door de Geest, voldoen daarom aan de vereisten van de Wet. 5 Want wie zich door de zondige natuur laat leiden, volgt de denkwijze van de zondige natuur, maar wie zich door de Geest laat leiden, volgt de denkwijze van de Geest. 6 Het volgen van de denkwijze van de zondige natuur leidt tot de dood, maar het volgen van de denkwijze van de Geest leidt tot leven en vrede. 7 De denkwijze van de zondige natuur staat vijandig tegenover God, want zij weigert het gezag van Gods wet te aanvaarden. Zij kan dat zelfs niet. 8 En wie zich laat leiden door de zondige natuur, kan niet doen wat God goedkeurt. 9 Jullie daarentegen laten je niet leiden door je zondige natuur, maar door de Geest, althans wanneer Gods Geest in jullie woont. Wie de Geest van Christus echter niet heeft, behoort Hem niet toe. 10 Maar als Christus in je is, gaat je lichaam wel dood wegens de zonde, maar schenkt de Geest jou leven omdat je bent vrijgesproken van schuld. 11 Als de Geest van Degene die Jezus uit de dood heeft opgewekt in je woont, dan zal Hij die Christus uit de dood heeft opgewekt, ook jouw sterfelijk lichaam levend maken, door zijn Geest die in je woont. 12 Broeders en zusters, we staan dus in het krijt, maar niet bij de zondige natuur. We hoeven ons dus niet door de zondige natuur te laten leiden. 13 Want als je je door de zondige natuur laat leiden, is het zeker dat je zal sterven. Maar als je met de hulp van de Geest afrekent met de praktijken van de zondige natuur, dan zal je leven. 14 Want iedereen die zich door Gods Geest laat leiden, is een kind van God. 15 De Geest die jullie hebben ontvangen, maakt jullie niet tot slaven; in dat geval zouden jullie opnieuw in angst moeten leven. Integendeel, de Geest die jullie hebben ontvangen, maakt jullie tot zonen, zodat we Hem "Abba, Vader" mogen noemen. 16 En het is die Geest die, samen met onze geest, ons ervan overtuigt dat wij kinderen van God zijn. 17 En omdat we zijn kinderen zijn, zullen we, samen met Christus, ontvangen wat God aan zijn kinderen heeft beloofd. Nu delen we in zijn lijden, maar straks mogen we ook delen in zijn glorie.

18 Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat het tegenwoordige lijden niet opweegt tegen de glorie die wij zullen ervaren. 19 De schepping kijkt namelijk reikhalzend uit naar het moment waarop die glorie van Gods kinderen zichtbaar zal worden. 20 Immers, de schepping werd aan een zinloos bestaan onderworpen; niet vrijwillig, maar doordat God daartoe besloot. Toch is er hoop: 21 ook de schepping zal van de macht van de dood worden bevrijd en deel krijgen aan de vrijheid en glorie van Gods kinderen. 22 Zoals we weten, zucht de hele schepping tot nu toe alsof ze barensweeën heeft. 23 En niet alleen de schepping; wij die Gods Geest hebben ontvangen als een voorschot op wat nog komt, zuchten zelf ook, terwijl we uitkijken naar het moment waarop geopenbaard wordt dat wij Gods kinderen zijn en onze verlossing volledig zal zijn. 24 Wij zijn gered met deze verwachting voor ogen. Maar als wij zouden uitkijken naar iets dat reeds zichtbaar is, zou het geen verwachting zijn. Wie zou iets verwachten dat hij reeds ziet? 25 Maar wanneer we iets verwachten dat we niet zien, kijken we er geduldig naar uit. 26 Bovendien komt de Geest ons te hulp waar wij tekortschieten. Wij weten namelijk niet hoe we naar behoren moeten bidden, maar de Geest pleit voor ons, met verzuchtingen die te diep voor woorden zijn. 27 En Hij die de mensenharten doorgrondt, begrijpt wat de Geest bedoelt, want de Geest pleit overeenkomstig Gods wil voor wie bij Hem horen. 28 Wij weten dat God alles doet meewerken ten goede voor de mensen die van Hem houden, die volgens zijn plan geroepen zijn. 29 Want wie Hij van tevoren gekozen had, is ook door Hem voorbestemd om op zijn Zoon te gaan lijken, opdat Deze, de Eerstgeborene, veel broers en zussen zou hebben. 30 Zij die door God waren voorbestemd, zijn ook door Hem geroepen. En zij die door Hem zijn geroepen, zijn ook door Hem vrijgesproken van schuld. En zij mogen delen in zijn glorie.

31 Wat kunnen we hieruit concluderen? Als God voor ons is, wie zou dan tegen ons zijn? 32 Als God ons zijn Zoon niet heeft onthouden maar Hem prijsgaf voor ons allen, zou er dan iets zijn dat Hij ons niet zou schenken? 33 Wie zal Gods uitverkorenen aanklagen? Het is God die vrijspreekt. 34 Wie is het die veroordeelt? Het is Christus Jezus die gestorven is – en meer nog: die verrezen is, die zich aan Gods rechterzijde bevindt, en die voorspraak voor ons doet. 35 Wie kan ons van Christus' liefde scheiden? Leed, ellende, vervolging, honger, naaktheid, gevaar of het zwaard? 36 Zo staat het ook in de Schriften: "Omwille van U worden wij de hele dag met de dood bedreigd, we worden behandeld als schapen voor de slacht." 37 Maar in dit alles behalen wij een glansrijke overwinning, dankzij Hem die ons zijn liefde heeft betoond. 38 Ik ben er namelijk van overtuigd dat noch de dood, noch het leven, noch engelen of demonen, noch machten in het heden of in de toekomst, 39 noch iets dat zich boven of onder ons bevindt, noch enig ander schepsel ons zal kunnen scheiden van Gods liefde, die Hij ons bewezen heeft in Christus Jezus, onze Heer.
