1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. 11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

1 Vanwaar komen die ruzies en conflicten bij jullie? Zijn ze niet het gevolg van de hartstochten die in jullie binnenste strijd voeren? 2 Jullie willen iets, maar krijgen het niet en daarom plegen jullie moord. Jullie verlangen naar iets, maar kunnen het niet bemachtigen en daarom vechten en ruziën jullie. 3 Jullie vragen aan God, maar ontvangen niet, omdat jullie vragen met de verkeerde bedoelingen – om jullie hartstochten te bevredigen. 4 Jullie zijn ontrouw aan God! Beseffen jullie niet dat vriendschap met de wereld vijandschap tegenover God is? Wie besluit om een vriend van de wereld te zijn, wordt daardoor een vijand van God. 5 Of denken jullie dat er zonder reden in de Schriften staat dat God jaloers waakt over de geest die Hij in ons doet wonen? 6 Toch is de genade die Hij schenkt groter. Daarom staat er: "God keert zich tegen arrogante mensen, maar schenkt genade aan wie bescheiden zijn." 7 Onderwerp je dus aan God en bied weerstand aan de duivel; dan zal die bij jullie wegvluchten. 8 Nader tot God, dan zal Hij tot jou naderen. Zondaars, was je handen; twijfelaars, reinig je hart. 9 Treur, rouw en ween! Rouw in plaats van te lachen en wees bedroefd in plaats van blij. 10 Onderwerp je aan de Heer, dan zal Hij je een eervolle plaats geven.

11 Broeders en zusters, bekritiseer elkaar niet. Wie zijn geloofsgenoot bekritiseert of over hem oordeelt, bekritiseert Gods wet en oordeelt erover. En als je over de wet oordeelt, leef je haar niet na, maar stel je je op als haar rechter. 12 Er is echter slechts één Wetgever en Rechter en Hij kan zowel redden als vernietigen. Wie ben jij dat je over je naaste oordeelt?

13 Luister, jullie die zeggen: vandaag of morgen gaan we naar die en die stad, we blijven er een jaar, doen er zaken en maken winst. 14 Jullie weten niet wat er morgen zal gebeuren! Wat is jullie leven? Jullie zijn als nevel, die voor korte tijd verschijnt en vervolgens verdwijnt. 15 Jullie zouden beter zeggen: als de Heer het wil en wij nog in leven zijn, zullen we dit of dat doen. 16 Maar nu zijn jullie trots aan het pochen en al dat pochen is slecht. 17 Als iemand weet wat hij zou moeten doen maar het niet doet, dan is dat een zonde.
