1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

1 Mijn broeders en zusters, slechts weinigen bij jullie moeten leraar willen worden, want zoals jullie weten worden wij leraars strenger beoordeeld. 2 Wij allen struikelen in vele opzichten. Als iemand in zijn uitspraken niet struikelt, is hij een volmaakt mens, in staat om zijn hele lichaam in toom te houden. 3 Wanneer we paarden een bit in hun mond steken om te zorgen dat ze gehoorzamen, kunnen we hun hele lichaam aansturen. 4 En de schepen, die groot zijn en door harde wind worden aangedreven, worden bestuurd met een klein roer, in de richting die de stuurman bepaalt. 5 Hetzelfde geldt voor de tong: zij is een klein lichaamsdeel, dat tot grote dingen in staat is. Door een klein vuur kan een groot bos afbranden. 6 Ook de tong is een vuur; ze is de wereld vol ongerechtigheid voor onze overige lichaamsdelen. De tong bevuilt het hele lichaam, steekt de levensloop in brand en wordt op haar beurt aangestoken door de hel. 7 De mens kan alle soorten wilde dieren, vogels, reptielen en zeedieren temmen, en doet dat ook. 8 Maar de tong kan door niemand worden getemd; ze is een onberekenbaar kwaad vol dodelijk venijn. 9 Met haar prijzen we de Heer en Vader en met haar verwensen we de mensen, die nog wel gemaakt zijn als Gods evenbeeld. 10 Uit dezelfde mond komen dus zegen en vloek voort. Mijn broeders en zusters, zo hoort het niet. 11 Zoet en brak water komen toch niet uit dezelfde ader van een bron? 12 Mijn broeders en zusters, aan een vijgenboom groeien toch geen olijven, of vijgen aan een druivelaar? En uit een zilte bron komt toch geen zoet water?

13 Wie van jullie is wijs en verstandig? Laat hij dat tonen door middel van zijn goede gedrag, door daden die voortkomen uit wijze zachtmoedigheid. 14 Indien er echter bittere afgunst en geldingsdrang in je hart leeft, geef dan niet hoog op over je wijsheid, want zo spreek je de waarheid tegen. 15 Dat is geen wijsheid die van boven komt; ze is aards, ongeestelijk en demonisch. 16 Want waar afgunst en geldingsdrang zijn, vindt men onrust en allerlei soorten kwaad. 17 Daarentegen is de wijsheid van boven allereerst zuiver, en verder vreedzaam, vriendelijk, redelijk, vol mededogen en goede vruchten, onpartijdig en oprecht. 18 Vredestichters die in vrede zaaien, oogsten gerechtigheid.
