1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. 2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. 5 So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord? 6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. 7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore. 8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. 9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. 16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. 17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. 18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

1 Jésus dit aussi à ses disciples: Un homme riche avait un économe, qui lui fut dénoncé comme dissipant ses biens.

2 Il l'appela, et lui dit: Qu'est-ce que j'entends dire de toi? Rends compte de ton administration, car tu ne pourras plus administrer mes biens.

3 L'économe dit en lui-même: Que ferai-je, puisque mon maître m'ôte l'administration de ses biens? Travailler à la terre? je ne le puis. Mendier? j'en ai honte.

4 Je sais ce que je ferai, pour qu'il y ait des gens qui me reçoivent dans leurs maisons quand je serai destitué de mon emploi.

5 Et, faisant venir chacun des débiteurs de son maître, il dit au premier: Combien dois-tu à mon maître?

6 Cent mesures d'huile, répondit-il. Et il lui dit: Prends ton billet, assieds-toi vite, et écris cinquante.

7 Il dit ensuite à un autre: Et toi, combien dois-tu? Cent mesures de blé, répondit-il. Et il lui dit: Prends ton billet, et écris quatre-vingts.

8 Le maître loua l'économe infidèle de ce qu'il avait agi prudemment. Car les enfants de ce siècle sont plus prudents à l'égard de leurs semblables que ne le sont les enfants de lumière.

9 Et moi, je vous dis: Faites-vous des amis avec les richesses injustes, pour qu'ils vous reçoivent dans les tabernacles éternels, quand elles viendront à vous manquer.

10 Celui qui est fidèle dans les moindres choses l'est aussi dans les grandes, et celui qui est injuste dans les moindres choses l'est aussi dans les grandes.

11 Si donc vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans les richesses injustes, qui vous confiera les véritables?

12 Et si vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans ce qui est à autrui, qui vous donnera ce qui est à vous?

13 Nul serviteur ne peut servir deux maîtres. Car, ou il haïra l'un et aimera l'autre; ou il s'attachera à l'un et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et Mamon.

14 Les pharisiens, qui étaient avares, écoutaient aussi tout cela, et ils se moquaient de lui.

15 Jésus leur dit: Vous, vous cherchez à paraître justes devant les hommes, mais Dieu connaît vos coeurs; car ce qui est élevé parmi les hommes est une abomination devant Dieu.

16 La loi et les prophètes ont subsisté jusqu'à Jean; depuis lors, le royaume de Dieu est annoncé, et chacun use de violence pour y entrer.

17 Il est plus facile que le ciel et la terre passent, qu'il ne l'est qu'un seul trait de lettre de la loi vienne à tomber.

18 Quiconque répudie sa femme et en épouse une autre commet un adultère, et quiconque épouse une femme répudiée par son mari commet un adultère.

19 Il y avait un homme riche, qui était vêtu de pourpre et de fin lin, et qui chaque jour menait joyeuse et brillante vie.

20 Un pauvre, nommé Lazare, était couché à sa porte, couvert d'ulcères,

21 et désireux de se rassasier des miettes qui tombaient de la table du riche; et même les chiens venaient encore lécher ses ulcères.

22 Le pauvre mourut, et il fut porté par les anges dans le sein d'Abraham. Le riche mourut aussi, et il fut enseveli.

23 Dans le séjour des morts, il leva les yeux; et, tandis qu'il était en proie aux tourments, il vit de loin Abraham, et Lazare dans son sein.

24 Il s'écria: Père Abraham, aie pitié de moi, et envoie Lazare, pour qu'il trempe le bout de son doigt dans l'eau et me rafraîchisse la langue; car je souffre cruellement dans cette flamme.

25 Abraham répondit: Mon enfant, souviens-toi que tu as reçu tes biens pendant ta vie, et que Lazare a eu les maux pendant la sienne; maintenant il est ici consolé, et toi, tu souffres.

26 D'ailleurs, il y a entre nous et vous un grand abîme, afin que ceux qui voudraient passer d'ici vers vous, ou de là vers nous, ne puissent le faire.

27 Le riche dit: Je te prie donc, père Abraham, d'envoyer Lazare dans la maison de mon père;

28 car j'ai cinq frères. C'est pour qu'il leur atteste ces choses, afin qu'ils ne viennent pas aussi dans ce lieu de tourments.

29 Abraham répondit: Ils ont Moïse et les prophètes; qu'ils les écoutent.

30 Et il dit: Non, père Abraham, mais si quelqu'un des morts va vers eux, ils se repentiront.

31 Et Abraham lui dit: S'ils n'écoutent pas Moïse et les prophètes, ils ne se laisseront pas persuader quand même quelqu'un des morts ressusciterait.

1 Gesù diceva ancora ai suoi discepoli: V’era un uomo ricco che avea un fattore, il quale fu accusato dinanzi a lui di dissipare i suoi beni.

2 Ed egli lo chiamò e gli disse: Che cos’è questo che odo di te? Rendi conto della tua amministrazione, perché tu non puoi più esser mio fattore.

3 E il fattore disse fra sé: Che farò io, dacché il padrone mi toglie l’amministrazione? A zappare non son buono; a mendicare mi vergogno.

4 So bene quel che farò, affinché, quando dovrò lasciare l’amministrazione, ci sia chi mi riceva in casa ua.

5 Chiamati quindi a se ad uno ad uno i debitori del suo padrone, disse al primo:

6 Quanto devi al mio padrone? Quello rispose: Cento bati d’olio. Egli disse: Prendi la tua scritta, siedi, e scrivi presto: Cinquanta.

7 Poi disse ad un altro: E tu, quanto devi? Quello rispose: Cento cori di grano. Egli disse: Prendi la tua scritta, e scrivi: Ottanta.

8 E il padrone lodò il fattore infedele perché aveva operato con avvedutezza; poiché i figliuoli di questo secolo, nelle relazioni con que’ della loro generazione, sono più accorti dei figliuoli della luce.

9 Ed io vi dico: Fatevi degli amici con le ricchezze ingiuste; affinché, quand’esse verranno meno, quelli vi ricevano ne’ tabernacoli eterni.

10 Chi è fedele nelle cose minime, è pur fedele nelle grandi; e chi è ingiusto nelle cose minime, è pure ingiusto nelle grandi.

11 Se dunque non siete stati fedeli nelle ricchezze ingiuste, chi vi affiderà le vere?

12 E se non siete stati fedeli nell’altrui, chi vi darà il vostro?

13 Nessun domestico può servire a due padroni: perché o odierà l’uno e amerà l’altro, o si atterrà all’uno e sprezzerà l’altro. Voi non potete servire a Dio ed a Mammona.

14 Or i Farisei, che amavano il danaro, udivano tutte queste cose e si facean beffe di lui.

15 Ed egli disse loro: Voi siete quelli che vi proclamate giusti dinanzi agli uomini; ma Dio conosce i vostri cuori; poiché quel che è eccelso fra gli uomini, è abominazione dinanzi a Dio.

16 La legge ed i profeti hanno durato fino a Giovanni; da quel tempo è annunziata la buona novella del regno di Dio, ed ognuno v’entra a forza.

17 Più facile è che passino cielo e terra, che un apice solo della legge cada.

18 Chiunque manda via la moglie e ne sposa un’altra, commette adulterio; e chiunque sposa una donna mandata via dal marito, commette adulterio.

19 Or v’era un uomo ricco, il quale vestiva porpora e bisso, ed ogni giorno godeva splendidamente;

20 e v’era un pover’uomo chiamato Lazzaro, che giaceva alla porta di lui, pieno d’ulceri,

21 e bramoso di sfamarsi con le briciole che cadevano dalla tavola del ricco; anzi perfino venivano i cani a leccargli le ulceri.

22 Or avvenne che il povero morì e fu portato dagli angeli nel seno d’Abramo; morì anche il ricco, e fu seppellito.

23 E nell’Ades, essendo ne’ tormenti, alzò gli occhi e vide da lontano Abramo, e Lazzaro nel suo seno;

24 ed esclamò: Padre Abramo, abbi pietà di me, e manda Lazzaro a intingere la punta del dito nell’acqua per rinfrescarmi la lingua, perché son tormentato in questa fiamma.

25 Ma Abramo disse: Figliuolo, ricordati che tu ricevesti i tuoi beni in vita tua, e che Lazzaro similmente ricevette i mali; ma ora qui egli è consolato, e tu sei tormentato.

26 E oltre a tutto questo, fra noi e voi è posta una gran voragine, perché quelli che vorrebbero passar di qui a voi non possano, né di la si passi da noi.

27 Ed egli disse: Ti prego, dunque, o padre, che tu lo mandi a casa di mio padre,

28 perché ho cinque fratelli, affinché attesti loro queste cose, onde non abbiano anch’essi a venire in questo luogo di tormento.

29 Abramo disse: Hanno Mosè e i profeti; ascoltin quelli.

30 Ed egli: No, padre Abramo; ma se uno va a loro dai morti, si ravvedranno.

31 Ma Abramo rispose: Se non ascoltano Mosè e i profeti, non si lasceranno persuadere neppure se uno dei morti risuscitasse.
